Nearly half of trans people attempt suicide. That's the only statistic you need to know how tough it is.

EDIT: Slight accuracy edit

It's possible your causation is incomplete. Mental health issues might appear together.

That is a brutally high number, but lets not ignore that considering yourself trans (as in feeling like you're the wrong gender) is already indicitive of feeling 'out of place' or 'uncomfortable in your skin'.

How many happy, healthy, confident, succesful people are going to feel like they were born the wrong gender? The human mind is not made up of a bunch of unrelated 'traits'. Being trans is already a flag for depression

There only seems to be one paper that directly relates to the point I made, and that's this one. The claim made is that the suicide risk of people that can 'pass' as their new gender is no different to the general population - but as far as I can tell that's not what the article says at all.

The paper says that, of 247 participants in an online survey, those with access to proper surgery reported a higher quality of life than those that didn't. But self-reported quality of life =/= suicide rate, not even close.

I'd be reluctant to make a claim like that based on such a small study, based on an online survey, especially when it's talking about how beneficial facial surgery is and it's conducted by a plastic surgeon.

Source please. It's the sub we're in, claims should be supported.
