Why am I starting to get the creeping sensation that No Man's Sky is the next Spore...

I've had that sensation since it was announced.

Seriously how are people only seeing this now? For like 2 years they've been showing off the same basic gameplay. Each of these four trailers supposedly showong off four different pillars of gameplay have been showing the same generic gameplay.

The idea and art style are nice and Id probably have fun with it for a few hours but I dont understand the hype surrounding this game.

Except the difference is with Spore they showed an original tech demo that was massively different than what we got. That's where the disappointment came from.

With No Man's Sky, they've always been accurate about what the game is. The public are the ones that have over-hyped this game beyond what it actually is.

I think I originally responded to the wrong post haha. My thoughts still stand, though of course I agree with you that Spore was sold on being something else where as this has been consistent.

Well, you are technically right. They just didn't say much about the game in the first place. It was even a long time mystery, if the game will support multiplayer in any kind of fashion. Apparently it does from what I hear, but the chances of seeing someone else are practically zero.

However, I will enjoy watching the release of this game. Personally I am interested, but nowhere near willing to pay 60 € for this. Let's wait for the first reviews and remarks of some youtubers.

I recall very early in the development it was explained that while others were technically in the universe, finding them would be almost impossible. Like, hitting a grain of sand with another grain from across hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of light years. So yes, practically zero.

Not only that, but even if you did find another human player, there is no indication that they are human, and any interaction would be minimal at best.

For whatever reason people wanted this game to become something it wasn't. It doesn't need multiplayer to be successful (and even if it did it would take potentially hundreds of years, real time, to find anyone). It is just an exploration game with hints of survival and some minor combat.

That's all it's ever been.

I don't know how the hype train started, because I've been following the game since the beginning and the lead developer has always been nothing but humble (minus the one trailer Sony did at the conference, that he even remarked wasn't very humble).

I think some people want a game that replaces our dream of Spore. Not sure.

I won't be pre-ordering, but I too will keep a close eye on it.

The main reason I pre-ordered was because I want something to dump hours into just exploring and killing random shit, as well as flying a space fighter jet around wherever I want. The only other game that comes close to what I want is Starbound, which might turn out to be the better product if everyone's fears are true about No Man's Sky.

Probably because Sony has shitty video editors.

I agreed. I was going to pre order but now I'll wait.

Never pre order. There's absolutely no reason to now that you can buy a game and have it in a few seconds.

Truth. I'm optimistic about the game and I'm still going to wait for reviews.

[–]Magnon 2

Lots of people don't have internet that allows them to have games in the dozens of gb in "Seconds". Plus, with steam refunds there's no danger to pre ordering what so ever.

I regret not pre-ordering Pillars of Eternity. I bought it a day after it launched for full-price and played the shit out of it, but I was hesitant to pre-order. Now I'll never get that little glowing pig. :(

well no..

if you're buying for console (which comes out a few days earlier) than pre-ordering from a store means you'll get the game same day, and if you're lucky maybe the day before. it also means you don't have to deal with downloading the entire thing either. also I don't know how it is where you are but in europe when pre-ordering a physical copy you don't pay a penny until the game physically leaves their warehouse.

there can be if you do play digital (I'd rather buy a game than rent one)
