Hey, mod here. This isn't "fan art"; it's satire. However, OP forgot to include the medium in the title so I'm going to have to remove it anyway. You can repost with the appropriate info in the title.

You can place anything instead of Pokemon and it will still make sense. like replace Pikachu with hamburger or tv or president of your country.

...or reddit logo.

[–]Duvo 4

Would probably be more impactful, i mean i can't see myself playing pokemon go 4 years from now

Im pretty sure more 30 year olds are playing this game than 14 year olds.

I'm 30, just got back from hunting 'mons on my lunch break. I couldn't give 2 shits what this artist feels about the game, I've met more people in 2 weeks than I have in years. I'm also spending lots of time walking around and having fun with my family while playing.

'mons

Mons pubis, noun, 1. a rounded prominence of fatty tissue over the pubic symphysis, covered with hair after puberty.

So you were hunting vaginas in your backyard?

Fuck yes I was, I drained all my pokeballs

So like that cushion that softens the pushin'?

Almost 27 and playing it every day.

Not sure why walking around outside for miles with my friends playing a game is a bad thing. Some people need to stop being so negative.

my eyes just rolled so far back that i am now staring at my brain. i feel like it's ironic how much stuff like this pops up on social media.

my favorites are the ones people post on facebook about how facebook makes you a zombie or the ones satirizing likes, that the artist puts on social media to get likes

people are taking this so seriously. I am an avid pokemon go player and i thought this image was funny. why are people so offended

I'm not offended, I just find this type of art to be cliche and the artists are usually hypocrites.

I agree with you. I'm not offended either, it's just such an overplayed genre of art. You see them posted a lot with people going 'woah so deep'. It's not; due to common usage.

I guess I don't understand how the rest of the world sees Go players. I never understood the zombie comparison but this image is just really visually shocking. Is that how Go players are seen? But either way, in a consumerist society, what aren't we slaves to? I look at my parents who sit in front of the TV for hours, because that is the generation they grew up in, and I can probably draw an image with a similar message: eyes taped open with a burger watching a mcds commercial. I think Go is much more involved than people on the outside realize. It's not a passive entertainment (like TV is) in the slightest.

This image really paints an unnecessary negative light, especially because Gamefreak and Nintendo have always intended pokemon to bring people together, get out and get active. They've finally succeeded and the rest of the world just can't be satisfied without criticizing the latest fad.

I don't see Pokemon players at all, because I don't look what other people are doing.

Shit, don't drive then.

Yes, Sir. I will shit then.

"When I tell you to 'Shit!' you say 'How big?'"

Sorry I guess I should have said how some people see go players?

But that sounds like a good principle to follow.

I'm not even into Pokemon GO, I played it only for about an hour, but this is an actual problem not just with GO players, but with gamers as a whole. People tend to judge groups of what they see as outcasts of society by stereotypes or just what they see from outside. That's why people can call gamers sociophobic nerds just because we can sit inside in front of our computers/consoles/whatever all day, completely ignoring the fact that a lot of gamers form communities, discuss stuff, meet each other through games, sometimes socializing maybe even more than a "normal" person does. They make those false accusations based on misunderstandings just because it's easier this way. But no one can really get it without getting into the culture. It's not just games, it's everything. Be it anime culture, Star Trek universe, pretty much every other geek culture, too. People can think many different things about them and judge them for being somehow "wrong", but not many of them know what they're talking about since they never experienced it for themselves.

Good points and I completely agree. My parents will disturb me and accuse me of not being busy when I am actually on Skype "hanging out" with my friends and playing a game with them. It is definitely a culture thing so this image was interesting to me to see how people outside of the culture view us. But again I think it is a shallow interpretation.

This seems like something that may be heavily influenced by generation as well. So many aspects of geek cultures are mainstream that it is almost strange for a young person to not be exposed at least to some extent. An older person is much less likely to have that sort of exposure.

I think in general there are many people concerned about the idea that people (not just gamers) are spending so much time not being present. "texting and driving" "texting while eating with others" and the like.

I do agree with you on the analysis of many of these things you mentioned though. Unless you are in these communities it is easy to assume they are not social because of the presence of the screen. I haven't played Pokemon GO, but every one of my friends that is into it has met way more people than myself over the last several weeks.

Artists tend to profit off of fads, on occasion.

Is that how Go players are seen?

No.

Yeah I should have said by some people which clearly they do.

your reaction and line of questioning is a little over the top for what is a pretty shallow piece of art.

It's the shallowness that irks me, and also that other people can relate to this image and it's message - I find it interesting and perplexing.

How original and interesting.

People who make 'statements' like this are ultimately just saying "I am better than you because of X." It's insulting because it summarises the complexities and nuances of someone's life, passion, interests and faults based on some small tidbit you gleam from making a generalisation about a group of individuals. At the same time many artists are the first to complain when they are not seen as an individual.

EDIT: I was referring to the image posted by OP not the comment from /u/VanJackson who I agree with.

I am a working creative myself and I don't experience or receive this as how you describe at all. I see it as a warning, not a blanket generalization. Different strokes for different folks I guess. Personal perception is subject to subject.

a warning

Of what?

Also, this isn't just bad because it's making generalizations. It's simply bad, in my opinion. It's incredibly ham-fisted and unoriginal. There's nothing interesting in taking your grandpa's views of new technology and forcing it down people throats with an overly blunt piece.

[–]high_class_ass_eater 0ポイント1ポイント  (0子コメント)

Your comment is a perfect reply to both the image posted by OP and /u/VanJackson's comment. You should've left out the edit just to see the confused discussion that follows.

God damn that's edgy

I always wondered: when people are shaking their fist over their head and shouting "Those damn kids and their Pokemon Go / iPhones / Video Games / Walkmans / any other fad, past time or new tech from the last 20 years!", what is exactly expected to replace these supposedly worthless things? Are people supposed to take their leisure time and instead help the poor, organize a soup kitchen, help out elderly at a retirement home? Become political activists for a noble cause? Instead of looking at their devices, engage in a meaningful conversation with a stranger on the bus?

Because let me tell you, even if you completely take away those pastimes, none of the things I mentioned will happen.

I'm 500 comments down and everyone is shitting on this post so I'm pretty sure this will not be well received, but: I think the idea behind these "edgy" pieces of admittedly shallow social commentary is that who we are is a product of what we spend our time doing. Pokemon Go is, like most diversionary media, something with very little depth. The last 30 or 40 years has seen a dramatic increase in our addiction to distraction, and this type of art is a way for someone to say "i'm worried about that".

So if I play Pokemon GO more, a tiny Pikachu will appear?

If that were true I'd be dropping more time into Pokemon GO than I currently do.

Awww I want a Pikachu on the back of my neck.

Look at all that edge

This hurts my neck to look at.

I've been seeing this piece all over facebook and reddit being mocked for being "edgy" and the like. I like Pawel Kuczynski, and I will admit his art is often kinda negative and a downer on a lot of things in modern society. A lot of his messages I don't agree with, but I love that his art makes bold statements and he can communicate a lot with simple images. I love Pokemon Go but I can't deny the change it's brought out in people, whether good or bad. I like to look at this piece as a statement of how such a small thing can have such a dramatic effect on so many people. Of course, the title makes me think the artist does believe he's being super edgy, but hey, art is all about perception.

These comments are a complete shit show. It's just satire art and all of you are getting extremely defensive about your Pokemon game. If your honestly insulted by the painting then maybe your in denial about how the game is taking over your life.

It's not very original but it's pretty amusing and drawn well.

Even if the message is nothing new, it's still worth pausing and thinking about it. Pokemon Go is a skinner box and I say this as someone who plays often and likes it. It just so happens to be one that promotes moving around and meeting new people.

Wow, talk about how offended some people are here.

Wow, lots of butthurt people in here. Listen, it is ok that you like the game and that you are having fun, but is is also ok that some people think that you are just being hivemind persons that just play pokemon GO because of all the social buzz and that you just don't want to feel "left out".

I feel like people are being too critical of this work. It's clearly well done in the technical sense and has very clear and concise message. Good job OP! Although admittedly I'm guilty of constantly being saddled by Pikachu nowadays. Can't stop playing!

The amount of hate and mockery in this thread is interesting.

I wonder who's behind it...

It's because people who really enjoy this game are pretty sick of the onslaught of criticism it has encountered. The entire game is that it makes you walk around. People already spend half their day staring at their phone anyway, cmon man.

It's funny watching the backlash from GO players over this image. They're getting very defensive and offended over it.

Yeah, nobody wants to see some app control zombie walking around in the world. They belong in their parents basement or other in-doors unseen locations. /s

I don't play, but I respect the hell out of a game that got people outside and moving around.

Is Pokemon Go bad? Is it controlling people? Maybe you could make a point to that. But even if it is, I'm reminded of a Jim Gaffigan skit that basically says, everybody has their own "McDonalds." link.

I see reddit has brought their pitchforks, so let me clear a few things up. 1. I am not the artist, do not take out your anger on me please. 2. I am not taking a stance on this social commentary, just posting what I thought was decent and topical art. 3. I play Pokemon Go.

I spent way too much time reading the comments for this generally bland piece.

The satire is clear, though something about the Pikachu's coloring messes with what the artist is saying for me. I feel like with a few changes this would go from something criticizing the rampant popularity of Pokemon GO to praising it.

As for that satire, a lot of people are calling it out for being "edgy" though, given some people's reactions to Pokemon GO, it honestly feels more bitter than anything. This comment is coming from a person who does like the game, so my bias might be showing itself.

Pokemon go actually helps nerdy shut-ins go outside and explore the world. It seems to be helping people with depression, anxiety, making friends, losing weight. It's pretty amazing what it's been able to do.
