People are going to play this game for 5 or so hours, realize there's no substance, and then stop. It feels like they built a tech demo and just tried to tack on some gameplay elements so that they could make money off of it.

I'll wait with the praise and the critique until it's released.

You should see their sub. Everyone's going mental about their pre-orders and how soon they can play it. Overhyped it so bad.

This is one of those unknowns that won't be apparent until reviews start coming out.

Go in any games sub and you'll see unwarranted enthusiasm. It's both overhyped and overhated. It's just a game. Don't get everyone's arousal. Wait and see.

As someone who has avidly followed No Man's Sky since it's announcement 3 or so years ago, I can tell you that for me, in-depth gameplay is not what I want at all. I don't care if the shooting is half-baked, or the survival is too easy. They promised me a universe that is mine to explore, my choices are my own, and everything we've seen points towards that. I don't want objectives telling me where to go, I want to aimlessly wander and explore different planets. I find myself standing still for 5 seconds in other games taking in the view and the game chastises me for it. This game won't, I'm free to do as I please. If the shooting isn't up to par, I won't shoot stuff unless I need to. If the trading doesn't have a crazy in-depth economic system, I won't trade for too long. The only thing I want to do is goof around and see the wonders of procedural generation.

/u/Chinflakes2 gives a personal justification of why THEY are buying the game and why it will be fun for THEM, and still at -2. I don't understand why people are so negative towards people who want to play the game. If you don't like it, don't fucking play it, and quit trying to convince people that they aren't going to like it.

EDIT: When I see the post in reference in the positives after coming back to this comment

Next time is a three day ban.

Yeah i haven't understood why the majority of reddit wants this game to be bad.

Until you get bored 5 hours later. I'm just worried about the depth.

    [–]Chinflakes2 6ポイント7ポイント  (3子コメント)

I understand your concerns, but I doubt I will get bored that fast unless there are only a few variations of the same stuff. From what we've seen, there are insanely large variations in terms of planets and even wildlife, which means more content. For people who isn't massively into exploration, I can easily see this game getting boring for 'em at least 10 hours in, because I highly doubt there's too much depth at all.

I don't agree with you but damn, why are people downvoting you. You make a good argument for people who share your opinion.

I couldn't agree with you more. Maybe it's just me, but they could have used the same video for all 4 segments and very little would have been lost.

It's actually shaping up to be a good survival game with an incredible sense of freedom and agency. It's very hard to see the appeal in these short trailers, so if you want to know how NMS actually plays, watch this twenty minute demo from start to finish:

Edit: the commentary is also very good, just ignore the cringey interview BS in the beginning if you have to.

That video just convinced me that OP is right. This game has no substance. It's a great tech demo. But there's not going to be much more than about 5-10 hours of enjoyment out of it.

And the fact that it's SO big is a huge negative. Who wants and online game that's so big no one will ever see each other?

    [–]le_benis 1ポイント2ポイント  (0子コメント)

What specifically about the video did you dislike?

Who wants and online game that's so big no one will ever see each other?

It's always been a single player game.

Sure, maybe for you. I haven't been disappointed by a game since 2004 though, and I'm excited to play NMS specifically because I like the style of gameplay. I like that it's simple and driven by systems instead of scripted moments.

That video only helped convince me not to buy the game. It needs some kind of building or something, were you can build your own base and collect stuff whilst exploring and put it on display. Without something like that I don't see the point of the game?

I'm playing Starbound at the moment but if they took the base building out of the game there would be no point playing it.

In most survival games, the world is a sandbox where you progress by crafting better things and fighting bigger bosses. Since you never actually move from your little island, settlements are necessary for another form of progression.

No Man's Sky is more of an adventure game with a destination than a pure sandbox. The end-game goal is to make it to the center of the galaxy, and you're meant to be moving toward it as you craft and loot. So instead of looting, crafting, and looking forward to improving your settlement, you're looting, crafting and looking forward to new planets and ultimately reaching the center. There's also your ship, which is a cool thing to call home if you ask me.

So if you already knew that, maybe the game isn't for you? And that's cool. I'm excited though.

I mean all the planets in NMS are procedurally generated so that's not so different from Starbound. You can travel to different planets in Starbound too and there are certain resources and quests on different planets. Also the further you explore on the planets the harder things get. The main aspect of the game however is base building, without it I would get bored of the game very quick.

I understand the NMS devs are saying the goal is to reach the center of the Universe but even that is going to be procedurally generated, it doesn't seem worth it to me. After a few hours of game-play it's going to be the same stuff over and over again only harder difficulty.

They really need a few more years on this game to add in base building and other stuff, then I would be interested. I'm sure some people will enjoy it, it looks nice but I think if I bought it I would be bored after a few hours.

This is exactly the game's problem. It's minecraft with a bigger and better procedural generated content without the building mechanic. Sure, you'll get a lot more of enjoyment exploring than you would in Minecraft, yet there is only so much actually unique content the procedural system can produce. You can't base the whole game on that aspect, simply because after 6-7hs of gameplay at best you'll start to find the same monument you found 10 planets ago, the same plant with a few variations, the same animals only a little bigger and this time with wings.
