Often Trump supporters deny their candidate is racist. When confronted with the facts they refuse to change their opinion, but one thing often said by them is that Trump's desire to ban Muslim's from entering the US is not racist, because Muslim's are not a race. Sometimes they will say the same thing about Mexicans - Calling all Mexicans rapists and thieves is not racist because Mexicans are not a race.
So really Trump is bigoted and prejudiced. Racism is one form of prejudice: racial prejudice. Trump is racist, but he also spouts religious bigotry and ethnic bigotry.
If we want to go down the rabbit hole even further we can inquire into the definition or nature of race. Race is a social construct - it's not biological or even physical, although it is often based on physical traits. Race is a category that society defines, and if you go to other societies, or even to other time periods in American society, you will find different definitions of race. (Africans have not always been 'black,' the Irish, Eastern and Southern Europeans were not 'white,' etc.) So if you're familiar with this literature or ideas on race, you know that race is actually a very poor way of defining a group of people. Ethnicity, which often has a strong religious component is a much better way of defining social groups. Now, as there is not really a name for hatred or discrimination against an ethnicity, we often rely on the term racist as a blanket term for hatred and prejudice against people of different ethnicities.
