Trending subreddits are determined based on a variety of activity indicators (which are also limited to safe for work communities for now). Subreddits can choose to opt-out from consideration in their subreddit settings.

I thought it was weird that a default sub would be on here so I logged out and checked if it still was. Apparently, /r/wtf is no longer a default subreddit. I wonder when that happened.

I mean it makes sense in terms of reddit's direction over time, as there was a big shift in the nature of defaults. They were casualized in such a sense, shifting from things like /r/atheism and /r/wtf to things like /r/food and /r/TwoXChromosomes. As for the when, quite a while ago, like 2013 I think. Pretty sure it was done voluntarily.

If I'd seen /r/WTF when I first got here I probably would have been very turned off, that place is like the wild west.

I never got why /r/atheism was default, considering it'd be highly alienating to many people. Even as an atheist, it's full of mass circlejerking. It's not so important that I have to insult religious people and their mindset every waking hour.

I guess it's the zeal of the convert.

No it isn't. A script generates a list of all subs eligible to trend and then an admin curates said list. This has been apparent since at least a year-and-a-half ago when they reran the trending system twice in the same morning, knocking /r/circlejerk out of the trending list.

DAE know how are the trending subreddits picked? Just curious as Donald Trump is about to come to Reddit for an AMA and an anti-Trump subreddit /r/EnoughTrumpSpam is trending on front page.

What are the chances that an admin would intentionally pick a anti-Trump sub when Trump's AMA is scheduled on Reddit today it's not like they have changed any algorithm because of that particular sub.
