In another life this guy has tenure at a local university.

I bet he is headmaster.

I bet he makes students give him the head as discipline.

I read this as "give him head"

...and I was thinking it rather impressive that within 2 comments a creepy picture of a dude showing off the skulls of 4 people whom he presumably killed turned into the start of a naughty schoolgirl porn. Ah reddit.

I also read as such

I wrote it as meaning the same

"Went out with this girl last night- she totally gave me the head."

Ah, you for narrowing down this string of comments out of hundreds because it speaks the most to you.

And ah me

A headmaster with an obsession for fourheads

Or a sort of talent scout for the athletic department...there's a name for that I think.

I'm a twenty something year old guy that's already graduated college and to this day don't know what tenure means :(

It means job security. Short of breaking the law, there isn't much the university can do to remove your from your teaching position.

What does 'Purdue' mean? We have a number of 'Purdue Rooms' at university. Exams are held in them. Is Purdue just a surname?

Yeah. You probably went to Purdue University. They have a lot of stuff named after Mr. Purdue.

At least you can admit it...

20 something.

you are just guessing at your age too?

Ignorance??!

DOWNVOTE HIM!!!

but seriously,

Tenure:

verb 1. give (someone) a permanent post, especially as a teacher or professor. "I had recently been tenured and then promoted to full professor"

I mean, I've never been one to pull the snarky "google it" card, but in this case ... did you honestly never think to take literally 10 seconds to google it?

Dude, he already finished college why would he use google anymore?

Should have stayed and gotten your master's.

Should have stayed longer to ask any prof what tenure meant.

That's next on the list... although I have no idea where to start on that front

You seem unbelievably ignorant about how university works. Must be a communications major...

I see a scary Will Ferrell

Running the risk of projecting, but I see a Sunglass commercial

Still gets more head than me

Looking at his age, he's probably sixty. Getting head every on average every 12 years isn't really anything to brag about.

Looking at his age, he's probably sixty.

Yea, maybe in a developed civilization. That guys is like 35, still a shitty head:life ratio.

He's actually just a teen, but already the oldest man in his village.

He's 4 foot 7 and 16 years old. Already faced mid-life crisis and that's why he became a head hunter.

Poor balding me can only think how amazing his magnificent head of hair is. Some say hes been hunting for it's magnificence.

Tru dat. I never noticed hair until I started losing mine.

Maybe I should try eating more people like in OP's pic.

I'm in that point of my life where I'm staying to relate with comments like this :(

Yeah what the fuck even is that? Like you show me some beat up old badass headhunter, and he has hair straight out of a shampoo commercial? It almost looks like a wig.

[–]the_front_fell_off 4ポイント5ポイント  (1子コメント)

Could very well be a wig made from the hair originally belonging to the skulls.

didn't notice his nowclearlymagnificent hair until you mentioned this! o_O

I thought it was a hat lmao

I'm Filipino and I have hair like this. I always hated it because I don't have many options on how to style it. But thank you for this silver lining

I just want to share my family's story. I'm half-Igorot. My mom's side is from a mountain village near Bontoc, by the Chico River. It's weird seeing this gaining traction on Reddit.

It seems like the Wikipedia experts have already chimed in but I would like to explain some of the cultural practices of my mother's tribe as I heard it from my grandfather.

Head-hunting is deeply ingrained in the culture of the tribe. It is a rite of passage for boys, a coming-of-age to cut-off another tribesman's head. Basically, if a person does not follow through with this, finding a mate becomes close to impossible. It is also a way to please the "anito," the spirits of the dead tribe members or clan. The more heads a person collects, the more tattoos that person earns. I don't know why the old man in this photo does not have any which I find very odd. If you look up photos of Igorots, most of them have tattoos. These tattoos are patterned after the scales of a centipede. They believed that it provides protection when fighting against another tribe. This fierce warrior culture is the main reason why Mountain Province in the northern part of Luzon was never fully conquered by the Spaniards.

My grandfather told me the story of his father, my great-grandfather, of how he got his name... which is now my middle name. When my great-grandfather was young, he chopped-off another man's head from a nearby tribe because of the tradition. He broke the cultural norm at the time and decided not to keep the head and returned it to the family of the man he killed. The family was very grateful and named him "Omaking," which meant "good-natured" or something along those lines. He became popular in the region because my great grandfather's family helped the resistance group and the Americans during WWII. They fed the soldiers. When the Japanese soldiers found out, they raided my great-grandfather's farm and dragged him out. They made him walk from the village all the way down to Bontoc, about 15-20 miles and beat him up along the way. The Japanese killed him in the middle of the town.

When the war ended, my grandfather told me of how he played in the roads and seeing the dead bodies of soldiers and the bullet casings that spread throughout the meadow. Then he was educated by Anglican missionaries and became literate. He moved to Manila with my grandmother and started his family.

I wish I heard more of these kinds of stories but Alzheimer's took his memories away. All I remember are stories I heard as a child. I wish I asked for more. He passed away three months ago. I wish I could've been there, but because of my immigration issues, I couldn't. His family from the village all came down to Manila and wanted to bring his body back to get mummified. Yes, Igorots sometimes mummify their dead. But my mom's family in Manila decided not to bring the body to Bontoc and have a regular funeral with a casket.

Seeing the comments here, I am glad that I will have shitloads of hair as I get older.

Hey there fellow Igorot! I'm full Igorot, half Kalinga tribe (the tribe well known for head hunting which is no longer practiced) and half Bontoc. The Bontoc and Kalinga lands bordered each other so probably why your mother knew folks from both tribes.

If you ever want to learn more or even our cultural dances, google Igorot + BIBAK to see if there are any chapters near you :).

this guy is a fucking badass...

in every MMORPG there is a quest NPC which kinda looks like him with skulls all over the place.

He's like a real-life necromancer from Diablo 1 TWO

GOD DAMMIT

You making that assumption based on the lack of teeth?

The one on the far left is adorable

Looks like a child's skull.

Very much so. Weird to be showing that off, not really something to brag about in head hunter circles I'm guessing.

It is frowned upon but there isn't anything in the bylaws about it.

It's almost like they go in order!

Didn't notice that. I do believe you're right. Maybe supposed to represent something?

He has OCD.

No really, I've been reading the page on headhunting and apparently each kill is a trophy.

Think of it as little Timmy arranging his baseball trophies in-order.

That was the head of his head hunter mentor. That's still pretty badass head grab.

A head Hunter is just a serial killer, right?

I don't know why it's ok for indigenous people to collect murder trophies when we clearly recognize that behavior as pathological within our own culture.

I had similar misgivings about the Masai tribe AMA.

Do you mean the AMA that's up right now?

Who said it was "okay"? People upvote it because it's really interesting.

Think of our most celebrated soldiers posing with plastic skull of the actual number of enemies they've killed.

It's possible to say "this is probably wrong, but I'm not in a position to intervene in a way I can guarantee will improve the situation". Generally speaking, when a bunch of white guys get together and say "let's make those brown people be more moral" it's turned into a horrific atrocity, rather than being actually helpful.

Source?

This image was from a book on Ilongots tribes. This photograph has been used as postcards, here's a source image with info on bottom ( http://www.oldpostcardmessages.com/uploads/1/1/2/3/11237165/6934512_orig.jpg).

[–]hikikomori_jesti 2ポイント3ポイント  (7子コメント)

whats the skulls from his enemies or what?

He took these heads from a neighboring tribe over a territorial dispute. Needless to say, he won the dispute and his tribe kept the land.

Most headhunting in this region is ceremonial to worship the recently deceased. Tribes are also known to take the heads of their enemies to show dominance. They will also behead their own tribesmen who break the laws and rules of the tribe.

It's also worth noting that unarmed explorers and hikers who've stumbled upon headhunting tribes have been beheaded in various ceremonies to ward off evil spirits.

Needless to say, he won the dispute and his tribe kept the land.

Goes to show what you can accomplish if you remain ahead of the game.

one by a headhunting tribe. If anyone has any questions I would be happy to answer from the best of my knowledge. T

It's Igorot, not Ilongots.

My mom is full-blooded Igorot. I remember meeting my great-grandmother in the mountains near Bontoc when I was 10. She had the bad-ass tattoos called "chaklag."

Filipinos have an interesting history, before colonization from the Spanish, we were all part of different warring tribes. Filipinos at their root are warrior clans. It's unfortunate our history hasn't been documented or perserved. This is why we are open to voting for Duerte. Death is rampant and is celebrated, it brings the community together. Many of our elders want to die or be buried in the Philippines purely for spiritual beliefs. It's interesting how modern day filipinos don't embrace their real tribal culture and traditions. Many feel ashamed of it.

When missionaries started educating the tribes, we lost our beliefs. I wonder what kind of religion would of came out of the Philippines. There is no traces of Buddism at all, which is very interesting for an Asian nation. Most likely we would of been an Islamic nation, which I think reflects our core root beliefs.

I have an ancient warrior Filipino tattoo done by a headhunting tribe. If anyone has any questions I would be happy to answer from the best of my knowledge. This man does not possess any tattoos, so these aren't his heads.

Interesting connection you make between being tribal warriors and speculating about Islam... considering wow there are a lot of Muslims in the Phillipines.

Many modern Filipinos don't embrace their real tribal culture and traditions because those aren't theirs at all. It's an "in" thing now to exoticize indigenous cultures and be all nativist about it, but most people just don't bother because they grew up in urbanized, heterogenous communities that don't reflect tribal lifestyles.

What are head hunting tribes? Are they the heads of their enemies? What function were they thought to have served? I have so many questions.

The head hunting tribes of the philippines are located in northern Luzon and mindinao area. Filipinos before colonization be lived in a more pagan religion of nature and nature. Head hunters would take the heads of their enemies and bring it back to their clan. A successful head hunt meant honor and prestige to a young warrior. They would also do a ritual with the heads like dancing and drink out of it. The heads were believed to contain spirtually powers and ward off diseases too.

No. We faced adversity (spanish-philippine war; america-philippine war) and instead of dying for our core belief, we chose to assimilate. Simple as that. Core values will live on if one is willing to defend it. The real hardcored valued people are the ones who fought against christianity and chose to die with their values intact than live with another value. They remain muslims of philippines to this day. Much respect to these guys who are willing to uphold their belief through spanish; american and philippines government influence. So what does that tell you about the ones who converted? Simply, that they are hospital and welcoming people.

This is why we are open to voting for Duerte.

Are you saying that Duterte was elected because Filipinos don't know the island's precolonial history?

No, it's because he represents our true beliefs pre colonization.

[–]the_restlessartist 2ポイント3ポイント  (1子コメント)

Your history is nothing to be proud of, though. It's filled with murderous serial killers. You, your family, and your country should attempt to distance yourselves as far as humanly possible form your barbaric roots.

The Spanish and Europeans were far worse. Americans nuked people. Yeah.....distance ourselves from what goes on to this very day. Your ancestors are serial killers and murders too lol.

How unfortunate your culture of killing people and warring tribes is losing touch with youth

EDIT: Thank you to notmyrealname14 who pointed out the different tribes and allowed me to search for the origin of the photo.

https://www.rubylane.com/item/160319-9586/Headhunter-Igorot-Tribe-Banaue-Luzon-Philippines

HE was from the Igorot tribe. A real 5 5 /8" x 3 3/8" photograph of a Headhunter with skulls.....believed to be of World War II Vintage taken by an American soldier or Correspondent in the Banaue area of Luzon Island in the Philippines.

The people in the various tribes of the Ilongot, Igorot and much of the Kalinga resisted the Spanish attempts at conquering for most of their three-century rule over the Philippines. As a result, they have a different appearance than the lowlander Filipinos who were inter-breeding with the Spaniards.

Thank you for your lead. Found this;

I currently live about an hour from Banaue. I wonder if anyone there would be able to tell me a bit more about this man from the picture. Given the tightly-knit nature of the culture, there's sure to be SOMEbody who knew him or at least would know about him.

Please post if you find out. All I could get was the photo source.

Filipinos can look very different, but still be Filipino - my Mom looks light skinned Chinese, but my Uncles actually look straight up like that guy - genes are funny.

I've never met a Filipino person that even remotely looks like a big white man.

There are some Filipinos who look quite Caucasian - their build is usually smaller though.

Recently shared a plane with the 'Philippines Volcano's' - the Philippines national rugby team and the players were all fairly big chaps. They all had Filipino features but many spoke with Aussie/Kiwi accents though - so guess they were half/half kids.

Am also good friends with a half/half (mom Filipina, dad German) Filipina. She married another European (French) and their children look completely European.

As someone else mentioned the lowland Filipinas interbred with the Spanish for centuries so there is quite a lot of European DNA there in the background. Similarly there are a lot of Filipinos with Chinese heritage and looks - due to historic trading links.

The Igorot and other 'hill tribes' that did not mix with the Spanish do look quite distinctive - but they are often made fun of by mainstream Filipinos (who make up the vast majority) due to their unusual appearance.

Yeah we're darker skinned and mostly have bigger lips. Past generations made fun of us but nowadays it seems much more cool to claim an "authentic self" and whatnot so now mainstream filipinos are copying our tattoos that the men only gained from killing in war and the women only gained from being the first born female. Not sure which is more annoying - when we were ostracized or when we're being appropriated.

those skulls could be spanish, some ancient gongs they use today still have parts of spanish skulls mainly the jaw as decorations

This is neither a Filipino or a Negrito.

For those who are down voting, Negrito is a real term

I read somewhere that headhunting really took off when Elizabethan travelers became enamored with the idea of savage headhunters, and their trophies... They created a market for hunted heads, making a somewhat uncommon practice into an industry.

He looks like he's one missed meal away from joining the party
