Report: DNC Staffer Investigating Manafort Ties to Russia Was Also Hacked

democratsA DNC staffer tasked with investigating Trump campaign manager Paul Manafort‘s ties to Russian leadership had her personal email breached by apparently foreign intruders, according to a report in Yahoo News.

Alexandra Chalupa, a DNC consultant, had been researching and preparing memoranda about Manafort’s ties to pro-Putin elements in the Ukraine when she began getting notifications on her personal Yahoo email account that her email was being hacked by “state-sponsored actors.”

Yahoo News’ Michael Isikoff reports:

“Since I started digging into Manafort, these messages have been a daily occurrence on my Yahoo account despite changing my password often,” she wrote in a May 3 email to Luis Miranda, the DNC’s communications director, which included an attached screengrab of the image of the Yahoo security warning.

“I was freaked out,” Chalupa, who serves as director of “ethnic engagement” for the DNC, told Yahoo News in an interview, noting that she had been in close touch with sources in Kiev, Ukraine, including a number of investigative journalists, who had been providing her with information about Manafort’s political and business dealings in that country and Russia.

“This is really scary,” she said.

The report about Chalupa comes out amid speculation that Russians were behind the hack that exposed nearly 20,000 emails from DNC officials, in an effort to weaken Democrats’ standing and aid Trump. The FBI announced on Monday that it was investigating the breach.
