How much money do you think United makes? [Genuinely curious]

It's more about the long term profit than immediate ticket sales.

History has shown that consistently having pre season in certain parts of the world can garner support. And given that asia is slowly beginning to show interest in football that's a lot of people to support United and buy shirts and merch etc.

E.g., Liverpool used to pre season in Scandinavia a lot and other big teams didn't bother. Now Scandanavia is full of Liverpool fans.

It's about securing an untapped market.

Every team does it, frustrating but not the end of the world

Copa America has a really weird schedule, which would make it that frequently 3/4 years United would be in Europe. And as much as preseason is about training and fitness I imagine it's also about international brand recognition, both for United and for English clubs in general. I imagine the club not touring 3 years in a row would make sponsors unhappy, some of the club management unhappy, and potentially higher ups in the FA as I'm sure the popularity of English club tours gives them some leverage in TV rights negotiations outside of Europe.

Well, this is all well and good. But you have to remember that these decisions that making plans to go to the US and Asia for example are made very very far ahead. Like this Asia tour was planned 8 months ago. And I believe also that United have plans to go to the US next year. so its not as simple to just change things like that.
