  • Attacks his wife, publicly calling her a hag

  • Accuses his dad of being behind the JFK assassination

And here Cruz is, standing up to this classless bully with a twitter account.

I saw the JFK thing earlier, but I forgot about Trump insulting his wife, along with numerous insults to Ted himself I'm sure.

They call the left cucks all day, but boo the shit outta the one guy that holds his ground

Edit: earlier autocorrect decided cuck=fuck, but cucks=cycle? Get your shit together Google...

I don't care who you are, it takes guts to face that down in your own party with the whole country watching.

Nah, Cruz is totally Draco. Acts horrible shit because he thinks he deserves better, but not willing to endorse metaphorical Hitler for the same reasons.

True, then again the previous Republican Speaker of the House called him "Lucifer in the flesh", so I'm pretty sure he doesn't give two fucks what the party thinks of him at this point.

Everybody in the GOP already hated him, so it's nothing new.

"If you killed Ted Cruz on the floor of the Senate, and the trial was in the Senate, nobody would convict you," -Lindsey Graham

Graham thinks he's a funny guy. But it's quite false that "everyone in the party hates Cruz." Millions of Republicans voted for him. It is specifically the entrenched politicians in Washington that he's been fighting the past few years who hate him.

[–]TitoTheMidgetLow-Energy Cuck 6

Well, sure - but then again, Graham was only talking about Republican politicians, not Republican voters. Clearly, at the very least, Texas Republicans like Cruz better than any alternative offered by Texas Democrats. But Graham isn't the only one to express the sentiment that basically everyone in the Senate hates him.

Don't forget when Trump's buddies peddled a false story about Cruz cheating on his wife. Trump could've ruined Cruz's marriage.

It's Lorem Ipsum, the Latin doesn't actually mean anything, it's just a bunch of random words and meaningless phrases strung together.

It normally used as a block of text that editors use to fill in space while they show off the graphical look of a document or presentation, or anywhere that needs text to look right but they don't want to actually have to write in anything.

At least he has a sense of honor.

Being Chris Christie and mostly engaging others during the campaign, or Scott Walker and bailing out early is one thing-- but people like Rubio and Cruz would be spineless to support Trump.

If someone talked about myself or my family like Trump did, I'd burn the fucker's house down, not endorse him for president.

A scorpion and a frog meet on the bank of a stream and the scorpion asks the frog to carry him across on its back. The frog asks, "How do I know you won't sting me?" The scorpion says, "Because if I do, I will die too."

The frog is satisfied, and they set out, but in midstream, the scorpion stings the frog. The frog feels the onset of paralysis and starts to sink, knowing they both will drown, but has just enough time to gasp "Why?"

Replies the scorpion: "Its my nature..."

What a bar to set. Like a prettiest turd competition.

Trump is just an egomaniac. Cruz is a fiercely intelligent weasel of a lawyer (who spent years working with SCOTUS cases and the like) who knows how to manipulate the system left and right and that combined with his religious zeal scares me more than Trump building a wall or a giant statue of his head in DC for us to remember him by. Cruz has always had a shitty personality if you look back at most of the people he ever worked with.

Idunno. I think, like our hypothetical Saruman, Cruz is just playing the long game while maintaining plausible deniability. He's pretty sure Trump will lose so he's going for the "I told you so", but he doesn't want anyone to say he was actually opposed.

That's true. Cruz stuck around longer so there was more mud to sling and it was more recent. Chris Christie either has the memory of a peanut, the morals of a mafia boss or is in it for the cabinet position. My bet is a combination of all three.

Same with Ben Carson. Some politicians are more sell outs than others. It can also be due to how irrelevant Chris Christie was becoming compared to Cruz who still has a shot next election which hints that he senses that Trump is going to lose in the general.

Everyone knows Christie has always been a spineless piece of shit though. Say what you will about Cruz, but he's a man of principle.

While Cruz was already disliked by a number of his colleagues, and tended to defy them anyway (the shutdown, specifically), it was still a ballsy move. And it has earned some degree of respect from me, for not bowing down to Trump like so many others in his party have.

Edit: here's the full speech if you want to see it, the drama starts at around 19 minutes: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ythfH1KhNKU

IMO the "drama" doesn't start at 19 minutes. It's the entire speech. You have to watch the entire speech for the full effect. The entire speech includes language that echoes much of the sentiments of Trump critics. I caught on at 6:55 when he mentions that the U.S. is not run by a dictator. Seems to be intentional wording for a speech that aims to subtly attack an authoritarian strongman.

He never talks about strength, might, or greatness. He talks about freedom and the constitution. He avoided the typical Trumpian talking points in favor of his own. He says to cast aside anger for love. He says hatred is tearing America apart. And shockingly for Cruz, he defends Muslims, atheists, and gays. What a toppsy-turvey moment that was. These things are anathema to the Trump ticket.

I despise Cruz, and obviously disagree with significant portions of the speech. It seems that people are hung up on the non-endorsement. But the speech itself was rhetorically brilliant. It opens up with a bait-and-switch to get people listening, then he delivers the message without alienating the negative audience, saying many things that the negative audience probably agrees with, then slowly builds up to the "moment." And when the "moment" happens, he selectively uses the word "conscience," a buzzword for anti-Trumpers in the GOP, who wished for the delegates to vote with their conscience. Oh, and it is delivered it in a way that makes you finally realize why he is a well-regarded college debate champion. And of course it is topped by the simple audacity of Cruz delivering it at this Trump convention.

The speech made me really glad that Trump won the nomination as opposed to Cruz. Cruz is terrifying, and he demonstrated the persuasive ability and oratorical skills to actually defeat Hillary Clinton in a 1v1 debate.

Ted Cruz knows that after Trump's landslide loss this year, Trump and everyone associated with him is going to be completely toxic in national politics. He's just getting ahead of the curve so in four years he can say "I never bowed to Trump, I stand for true conservative principles" and other such bullshit.

Dude's a fucking rat but it was still nice to hear he didn't endorse Trump.

This moment reminds me of a time 8 years ago when John Mccain, who I disagree with on most policy issues, got booed by his own supporters for showing the most basic respect and decency towards his opponent Obama.

The sheer insanity of what those supporters in the video are saying is beyond belief, and it is exactly bullshit of that magnitude which Trump has successfully used for his campaign. I've been watching this video every time I have needed a dose of anti-bullshit in the past months. It works!

It takes balls to stand in front of a room full of charged supporters and tell them something they don't want to hear. Trump and other pure populists remind me of those alien monsters in Rick & Morty who try to manipulate and control people by injecting memories into their brains. The only way they could be distinguished from real people was the fact that they were only capable of showering their victims with happy memories that made them feel good. If there was any evidence of Trump being able to tell a crowd something they didn't want to hear he might deserve at least that tiny bit of respect, but there is absolutely none. The only case you might argue were in the debates, but those people were supporters of other candidates and not the ones he was addressing. Otherwise, he will say whatever people in that particular room want to hear, even if it clashes with something he said to other people the day before.

Mccain in that video and Cruz at the convention may be aware of what they are doing and even self-serving (in Cruz's case), but the fact they are not willing to throw any and every principle under the bus when faced with a charged or angry crowd deserves at least the most basic of respects.

Trump's tiny hands cannot cup even one of Ted's huge balls.

I'm so proud of that despicable little twerp. I mean it. Convention STUMPED.

Huh I was totally certain that after several month of Trump insulting him, questioning his character, and insinuating his dad was behind the JFK assassination that Ted would offer his total support for him.

WHAT ARE THE UNITS?!

I never thought I would actually say this but Cruz has earned some respect for going into the Lion's Den and refusing to fall in line.

Goddammit Cruz, don't make this die-hard, born-and-raised, secular humanist social democrat have to praise you.

Mods we should temporarily turn this into a Ted Cruz themed subreddit. Or at least change the css so everyone's name isduspladed as "Ted Cruz" if even only for a day

Let's not pretend Ted Cruz did this out of principle. Ted Cruz did this out of spite and jealous and because he thinks he can run in 2020. This was political opportunism.

And the rest of his speech was firmly to the center of what he's been saying for years. Everyone was so distracted by the non-endorsement, nobody seemed to notice the part where he said gay people have the protection of the bill of rights...this is 2020 Ted Cruz.

this is 2020 Ted Cruz.

The distant future

The year 2000

Ted Cruz no longer says 'yes', he says 'affirmative.'

He might've done it out of spite but he might genuinely feel that Trump is not qualified and who the hell are we kidding, there's no way this dude is even remotely qualified

Marco Rubio: Let’s dispel with this fiction that Ted Cruz doesn’t know what he’s doing. He knows exactly what he’s doing.

[–]Zemyla 7

Well, also, Cruz was pissed that Trump attacked his family. That's probably a factor.
