The fighting in this trailer looks really bad to me. The weapons seem to be really light, having little impact, tired sounds ("pew pew", goes the laser). Combined with the fact that the player can't hit the broad side of a barn...

It didn't draw me in at all.

Agreed.

And the game having mediocre or even bad combat isn't necessarily a huge deal. I don't think combat has ever been a main theme for the game. But I wonder why they made a whole trailer focusing on it and making it look so bad.

Every No Man's Sky video thread...

"X looks awful..."

"Yeah, but X doesn't matter, the game is all about Y!"

Which is a fair argument sometimes, I believe.

But with "EXPLORE. FIGHT. TRADE. SURVIVE" they are making it seem that fighting is a main part of the game, and with the extreme lack of variety in the trailer, I doubt that it is.

[–]Syelor [

I don't think it looks all that bad, and like you said its to do with the other features of the game that is making it popular. I'm not buying No Mans Sky to fight monsters and have space battles, but having the option to do exactly that is pretty cool.

You gotta remember this is a very small dev team which probably worked on this trailer also, unlike other triple A companies who probably have a whole department on making trailers (hence the mostly faked ubisoft ones)

This is not an excuse for anything, and people need to stop pretending it is.
If something is bad, it is bad.
It is not suddenly good because X.

I don't think being a small dev team is an excuse for a bad trailer. I do some video editing and even if the combat does suck, I could make a more exciting trailer in less than a day.

Either way, I think this trailer hurts them. Yes, combat is definitely probably not a main theme of the game, so they shouldn't pretend that it is.

[–]Syelor [

Yeah I agree with you, they are a creative team after all. But hiring a team that have experience in trailer making will make a difference IMO. I've seen tons of shitty trailers from indie/small dev teams.

If you really think you can make a better trailer, prove it. I coach pro and am athletes and they claim shit like this all the time. We started a thing - if someone calls you out for claiming something and you back out you get your eyebrows shaved off. You think you can do a better job with no industry experience? Fucking prove it.

Athletes claim they can make better game trailers all the time? Weird.

You seem very angry, please calm down, first of all. Second, I can't prove it because I don't have access to game footage. Third, I don't give a shit what you think and wouldn't waste my time proving it even if I could.

Downvote me and move on, coach.

Didn't realize I was taking to an autist, my apologies.

Yeah....my reasonable reply screams autism

You getting angry that I dislike a video game trailer and furiously insisting I prove myself says...what exactly?

There's so much wrong with your replies I couldn't begin to poke fun at you for it. There simply isn't enough time in the day.

So just know that I'm terribly sorry for your learning disabilities and hope they don't make things overly difficult for you.

Are we watching the same video? Most shots connected. It does seem some weapons involve leading the target, which I actually view as a huge plus for space combat which is maybe what your were talking about?

[–]Symbiotx [

Yeah it's like they made this to say SEE?! STUFF SHOOTS IN THIS GAME! but it came off as shallow. I think it only lends to the suspicion people have that there isn't much depth to the game.

Yeah this trailer was lazily done. Imo the e3 trailer from 3 years back looked more exciting. Cant see why they cant do it again.

Man, I hope this game is good. Not just for the sake of me having fun, but there are thousands of people over on their subreddit who think this game is the next coming of Christ. And they literally worship the guy in charge.

I mean, I think it will be a good game, but I have some obvious issues with it, even from these trailers. The ground combat looks okay, but the space combat just looks blah as hell. And then you have the question of "is bigger really better?" Technically, I have 18 quintilian procedural generated Minecraft worlds at my fingertips, too, but that fact alone doesn't make Minecraft good. It's the game play and meaning behind doing things.

I'm in the same boat as you. Sure, I hope its an awesome game, but the shit you see people say over at the subreddit is unbelievable. People literally saying "I already love this game" and getting extremely defensive when people are skeptical or doubtful.

I wish everyone was more skeptical of games before they come out. ESPECIALLY when we haven't even seen any real uncontrolled gameplay. Do we have any of that? As far as I know, it has either been videos from Hello Games, or clips of the game being played in a very controlled setting.

[–]captain_william [スコア非表示]  (1子コメント)

I'm wondering how boring the game really is. You know, if it's supposed to be really big, what are the odds that you are going to have a space battle with immense ships, or finding a lost civilization on a planet. Isn't the game supposed to be somewhat random? Or will it always be that you will find a group of ships to battle, once you cross the solar system. Than doesn't that get boring because if you start over you know that will happen again?

I'm going to wait several weeks after release to see if there are cracks to the game. Cracks meaning problems with the game i.e. SimCity online.

Hasn't Sean said that MOST of the planets are barren and lifeless? If so, why haven't we seen any of those in the gameplay videos that are out?

There may be people saying those things, but people express plenty of skepticism there as well. This trailer in particular is being torn to shreds as we speak.

Here's Anthony Carboni of Playstation playing a demo: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qqmJ8k9uBB0 (footage is from the most recent April interviews & demos) (control is handed over at 5:11).

Here's Ryan McCaffrey of IGN playing a demo: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qfpMRoZwzpk (footage is over a year old).

Here's Shuhei Yoshida playing a demo: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-sb-clg3Tlw (control handed over at 3:40) (footage is over 6 months old).

In the first two videos they are only on one planet. Pre-determined by Sean Murray I'm sure. The 3rd video starts on one planet, then Sean takes them to another. This is all very controlled gameplay footage.

Hasn't Sean said that a majority of the planets will be barren and lifeless? We haven't gotten to see any gameplay (as far as I'm aware) of someone getting to just fly to 3 or 4 different planets.

And I've heard the argument "well they don't want to spoil the game". First, anyone who doesn't want to watch, doesn't have to. Second, if the game is as huge and limitless as people are saying, showing 3 or 4, hell, even a dozen planets will be insignificant.

This is why I'm highly skeptical of the game.

The second video is actually part two of two, in the first part Sean gives an 18 minute demo on one planet, hands over control to Ryan, and Ryan picked a nearby planet - the video then resumes with Ryan flying towards it.

Yes, the majority will be barren and lifeless, however, even if someone got to play a very long demo they wouldn't land on many lifeless planets because for the demos they change the variables so that life is present. You can't show off animals to the press if you can't find them, or show off new NPC mechanics if you can't find NPCs, etc.

There's a lot more to "spoilers" than simply, "showing more planets" in the case of the game. Spoilers would also involve weapon types, resources, abilities, upgrades, NPC interactions, structures, etc. think about a game like Minecraft, when it released no one knew how to craft anything, it was trial and error. No Man's Sky will be similar on release, with people finding blueprints necessary to find out how to craft items, and sharing these online. Could you imagine if they told you how to craft certain things, told you where to get certain resources, and so on?

Showing more planets isn't spoilers, I'll agree with you there, but that tends not to be what they're talking about when the developers say, "I don't want to spoil". It would be nice if we got to see more planets, but it's superfluous in the long run, all it would be doing is scratching off one more wonder someone could experience for the first time.

Healthy skepticism is good, I'd say wait for people to start streaming it if you're not into current gameplay footage. Though, you can hardly expect them not to curate those playing, after all, they've got a certain amount of time to run down certain features for journalists.

Right, so the demo having different variables is not an accurate representation of the game.

I agree with you that there are more spoilers than just showing planets, but again, if you don't want to see them, just don't watch. I just find it very suspicious when any developer doesn't show genuine gameplay before release. This isn't just me piling on No Man's Sky.

I've found it to the be the opposite everyone else. There's always someone who says something along the lines of "I hope the game fails" or repeating the same "but what do you DO in the game" questions over and over, when it's clear that they haven't even bothered to type in "No Mans Sky gameplay" into Youtube or Google and are basing their entire view of the game on a single 3 minute trailer.

I've seen maybe two 30 minute gameplay videos and know everything I need to about the game. I'm not going to pre-order it because there is no point for a digital purchase, but I am for sure going to check it out on the release day as long as the early reviews don't turn out to be god awful.

I think people hoping for it to fail is just as dumb as people saying it's the greatest game ever without having played it or seen everything the game has to offer.

Pretty much. On one end you have the fanboys who are just screaming out praise for a game that they have never played and are not willing to even consider for a moment that the game could turn out poorly.

On the other end you have a bunch of sad, angry people shouting that they hope the game fails because they want everyone else to be just as pessimistic and sad as they are.

Both sides are just as ignorant as the other.

That's kind of a poor description of the side who don't believe the game is going to be great. They just believe it's all promises with nothing to back it up.

I agree. I see so many people who appear to be wishing for it to fail just so they can say "I told you so" to random strangers on the internet.

I see this with a lot of popular and ambitious games. No Man's Sky, Star Citizen, Destiny, Division, etc.

I don't know why people get kicks from failure.

But Minecraft also has an essentially nonexistent art style.

What I want to know about the game is whether being on one planet will be functionally different than another planet, or is it basically a palette swap?

[–]Syelor [

From the beginning they wanted to create a universe to explore, everything else really is a bonus. For such a small team they've pulled it off, and comparing it to Minecraft is a little unfair since from the very beginning everyone thought it was terrible and has now had tons of development not just from the Mojang team but also the community, but hopefully like Minecraft No Man's Sky will grow just the same and as big.

But I'm still skeptical of this game, I just hope they managed to pull of a game that keeps you wanting to come back.

How do you know they've pulled it off? We've seen nothing of the game except for what Hello Games has allowed.

[–]Syelor [

In the terms of a working game, you can travel to different planets etc.

when did people think minecraft sucked at the begining? lol people were all over the game right from when it was barebones and just a small creative world.

Yeah I never remember MC getting bad press. It was always an interesting little game right from the start. I got it during alpha because of the buzz.

The more and more I see of this the more vindicated I'm feeling. Combat looks minimalistic and boring if that's what they had to show off. We'll see if the other trailers are similarly light on actual gameplay beyond the exploration loop.

While this game is a technical marvel, I think it's fair to say that this game has the potential to be a huge flop. From all of the content I've seen put out, I can't seem to get myself excited for it. I like the IDEA of it, but the execution looks really odd. I'll try it out for myself once it's out and I'll wait for reviews.

I don't even think anyone can safely say its a technical marvel yet. Its ALL hype so far. We have no idea about the variety we'll actually be getting.

After reading countless comment threads about this game for the better part of the past two years, I have come to the following conclusion.

I'm going on media blackout of everything NMS related from here on out.

Not because I think there is anything inherently wrong with people's comments. Everyone is just so all over the place with their thoughts and criticisms.

So I want to form an opinion on the game that is wholly my own. That's already going to be difficult and seems likely to get even harder over the next two weeks.
