Wtf, upvoting won't ever get you prosecuted by German law. That is silly.

Even if this was true, Erdogan himself has to actively complain and advise the German prosecution to examine the circumstances. Merkel then has to actively allow the prosecution to do this and if they decide you massively insulted Erdogan by upvoting a post on reddit, it would be possible to face any consequences.

And as I already said, upvoting won't ever qualify for anything close to this procedure. Just read some random German comments on articles about Erdogan on Facebook. Every 3rd comment is much worse than this funny pic here and nobody faces any consequences copypasting the peom of Böhmermann. Even Detlef Seif, member of the German parliament, publicly recited the poem in the Bundestag and didn't face any consequences.

The comment is just so incredibly misinformed that I, as a German, feel the urge to destroy my keyboard with my head.

First of all, because in practice, no one except Reddit knows what you upvoted unless you enable that setting manually, IIRC.

Second, because it's very questionable whether upvoting would be a problem. (Resharing probably would, though).

Third, IIRC prosecution of this would require Merkel (or rather some other part of the government that will do what Merkel says) to allow it again, which she might not be willing to do after the outrage and the purges following the coup.

Fourth, I don't see how committing this "crime" outside Germany as a non-German, then going to Germany, would expose you to prosecution.

So I downvoted you instead, in which they nodded approvingly. They left, but not without the "we keep an eye on you" gesture. Such is live in Germany.
