" the retailer was required under federal law to provide a space for nursing mothers"

Why?

Do that at home. That's why you have one.

Everyone wants to be a special snowflake. Next thing you know some dude will want a special room when he is horny because he and his wife are undergoing fertility therapy and he needs to provide samples.

Be honest - do you know what goes on in those rooms?

Are you aware of the mechanics of breastfeeding? It is completely impractical to have to go home every time. Do you suggest she not work and use more federal and state welfare resources or does providing her a room to take 30 min UNPAID breaks sound more reasonable?

"And why are employers required to have bathrooms for their employees? Do that at home. That's why you have one!"

We decided (as a society) that employers should be required to provide certain services to their employees in the name of basic human health and safety. This is one of them.

Lol. You've never even seen a baby, have you?

Either you do not understand human biology or you are suggesting women should not work at all when they are trying to breast feed.

Going home is not practical. Only pumping during the mandated breaks of a shift will result in the eventual inability to breast feed.

Unless we want to reinvent the core tenants of how society views an employer-employee relationship, this is not an overstep. I'm not familiar with the law's details but I've read nothing requiring that an employer pay women during these mandated breaks.

Employers not offering such accommodations is how we end up with asshole unions.

asshole unions

Like the one that sided with the mother and did what it could to help?

Without some oversight employers would not provide anything but the most rudimentary facilities for its employees. People need money and will endure bad conditions and shit pay if that is the only alternative to being broke. Someone is always hungry enough to do a job for less.

No, not like this one. I was speaking in the more general sense. I believe history has shown that without some basic labor laws in place, the corporations and the unions will tend to polarize more than they already do and further descend into an us-versus-them mentality.

:edit: Just re-read all of this. What i said above was essentially that asshole companies end up with asshole unions. Why is this something that a reasonable person would debate?
