Seams like a flaw in the game design... I'd have given players a reason to disable and the (dismantle) them for more/better parts because they weren't blown to smitherines...

That would actually be pretty neat, I'd definitely make an effort to find those terminals if that was the case.

If you expect meaningful choices from Fallout 4 you're gonna have a bad time.

Your also missing the aluminum, rubber, and adhesive that you need to build the generator to power your upvote.

That's okay. I'm sure I can take Piper apart and get some rubbers out of her.

Is she a synth or did you just fuck her too many times?

without the /s we will never truly know

Well if you did that the generator would hack into Reddit servers and give everyone a downvote.

Adhesive you can farm at least. Aluminum there are several good locations to find in abundance, but gears and rubber were often short for me.

Rubber wasn't hard to find especially but the items that contained it were often low value and heavy, so I never wanted the nick them up

[–]only_sometimes_haiku 2ポイント3ポイント  (2子コメント)

I trained strength pretty high, so I nick up a lot more of the than I otherwise would.

Saying 'nick up' makes me think you're just tossing it all to Nick Valentine and he's just your pack mule.

[–]Imperial_Affectation 0ポイント1ポイント  (0子コメント)

Nah. They ordered him to pick the stuff up. Saved them a step.

Power armor with extra carry and the same for your companion, take everything with you.

Companions can actually carry an unlimited amount.

Bethesda Pro Tip:

If your companion "can't carry anymore", drop what you want them to carry on the ground, and then command them to pick it up. They will pick it up no matter how much they're carrying.

Congratulations! You now have a pack mule with unlimited carry space.

[–]dont_be_that_guy_29 2ポイント3ポイント  (1子コメント)

Wow, I never knew this. 350 hours and I never knew this...

Well...

I found it out on a fluke. I think I was trying to get Lydia to pick up a giant's hammer in Skyrim...it's like that in any Beth game that has companion commands.

Have fun!

edit: And yes, there is a single Giant's Hammer in the game that's not being held by a giant. Yes, your companion can pick it up. And use it.

It took so much self control to not abuse this.

Fuck that noise...abuse it. Games are about having fun! Bethesda games in general have always been about hoarding. It's the reason why you're able to pick up every little thing. They know their fans hoard items. So I say fuck it. Fuck carry weight limitations.

Never liked putting my companions in power armor. They treat it like shit and I end up needing a ton more resources to repair it all the time.

I tend to carry too much weaponry is my problem.. Even though I realistically only used 2 or 3 guns repeatedly I always had at least 5 or 6 on me in case I ran into certain situations or ran out of ammo for my main.

If you're out scavenging up junk, just put them in an empty frame. They get the extra carry weight without wrecking up all your good shit.

I did the same.

Well, I'm using a .45 as my main, but I should bring a .32 to deal with trash monsters, and I need .308 for sniping, guess I should also bring a .50 for big monsters, toss in a silenced 10mm for sneaking, and screw it, I'll take a .44, maybe I'll need the damage and it's just a pistol.

My second character is full melee and I have a cabinet at sanctuary with like 250 guns in it. I have like ten thousand of every ammo type too. I might go gun nut for end game.

I just let them use the older models that don't require aluminum to fix, I have steel out the ass.

You could use the companion unlimited carry glitch.

I carry too much aid, which adds up. Got to carry it all because I might need it for a big fight! I won't use it on this fight because I might need it for a bigger fight! Oh look, 100% completion and I'm carrying 400 pounds of food and drugs!

I have a similar problem with saving my mini nukes for when I "really need them," which is basically never since I have The Last Minute now, and since the mini nukes are more plentiful in 4 than NV I end up having like 50 of them.

Or that moment where you score a sneak attack against your companion and blow the helmet right off.

Strong not need armor like puny human. Strong carry everything.

[–]dont_be_that_guy_29 0ポイント1ポイント  (0子コメント)

Those pack mule perks are great too.

The last one allows you to fast travel while over-encumbered. Once I had that perk I would take full loads and store them in a container or a body that was near the exit. Then when it was time to leave I would pick it all up and fast travel back to Sanctuary.

I found a bunch of gears in the toy factory and the corners plant.

Gears were a bastard for me, and I always had problem with aluminium when all the cans had been sucked up. Need to just patch that extra fat man hole with one more can.

That's the most annoying shit in the game. I do not like the crafting

I only need to dismantle eight large appliances and I'll finally have the half-dozen screws I need.

In the future, a massive washing machine is made of two small sheets of aluminum and three screws. That's it. A tricycle and two pencils can make a solid seven foot wall.

Pencil: one wood.
Massive tree: eight wood.

Seems legit.

[–]A_Guilty_Bystander 2ポイント3ポイント  (0子コメント)

Yeah but once I figured out you could add items in the 10k range and linked all the places together I really ruined the game for myself. I had everything. It was boring

Managing an inventory filled with garbage is boring.

I allowed myself to cheat using the console if I wanted to give my character an alternative starting loadout. It's what I missed about New Vegas in particular!

Its fun when you have self control and don't break your game.

Well you can be creative with it. Like, make an impregnable fortress using everything you spawn, then use "tdetect" so the npcs wont see you, followed by "setavagression 4" to make the npcs attack on sight.

Don't know if it works, but it'd be cool. You could even RP as the exiled commander breaking in

[–]I_Just_Mumble_Stuff 0ポイント1ポイント  (4子コメント)

This is a problem I've had with every fallout game. Do I miserably scrap and claw my way across the wasteland, never having enough x to do y, or do I cheat a little?

I don't remember there being all that much crafting in any of the previous games.

Fixing things into each other to keep quality up but other than that not really. Maybe making A railway rifle or bottlecap mine. It was less customisable.

It started off inoccently enough. Few things to finish some laser turrets, defend a new colony with a ring of heavy laser turrets. Sorry guys no room to build beds but hey, 25 laser turrets. Just listen to the sound of freedom.

Then it was adding caps, and guns and there is this laser that fires continously without stopping and I ran through 9999 rounds in 3 hours.

I'm level 600, all perks, walking through walls in god mode in power armour firing unlimited amounts of mini nukes at any and all targets whilst I spawn Brotherhood Knights to fight super mutant behemoths.

It was very awesome. And I couldn't top it so I stopped playing.

[–]I_Just_Mumble_Stuff 0ポイント1ポイント  (0子コメント)

And there's the rub, I'd never experience that without cheating. I'm not going to spend literally hundreds of hours leveling and collecting to get to a point where the game play is half that cool. But then I get there, I peak, and the come down is awful.

To be fair the Far Harbor DLC has a lot more meaningful choice. I absolutely hated the lack of choice in the game originally but in Far Harbor you can tell they really listened to the feedback. It's practically overwhelming just how many different choices you have in that DLC.

I only played about 40 hours of Fallout 4 before I got bored with it. I tried to pick it up a little over a month ago but it still didn't feel right, so I started playing New Vegas instead. And now I am 60 hours into a New Vegas playthrough. :\

[–]Sanwi 0

Jesus christ I wish this circle - jerk would die. You realize that even if there are only four choices, and even IF, somehow, only two were real "choices," the other two can absolutely be meaningful?

You want meaningful choices? There are four factions. You can only really pick one.

There's only one faction. Or are you a dirty synth lover?? charges laser pistol

You mean there are people that didn't join the institute to make your family whole again? What do you think this game is about? Fun? Doing the right thing? No, you reunite with your son and live happily ever evil.

Urgh, I guess that's the spoiler I managed to avoid all this time.

My problem was that dialogue with people was not thought out at all. I would have conversations with people where my only option was to ask them a question that I would HAVE to already know the answer to before I could even meet them. OR after having known Piper for literally less than one minute, she starts having a conversation about how we are having a rough patch in our relationship. That, combined with the inability to say no to people, makes you feel like you have no control over your character in what was supposed to be an RPG.

Traditionally, Western RPGs (and especially Fallout games) give you more to choose than your ending. This one doesn't even let you choose if you want to accept side quests.

You can refuse quests by just walking away.

If it weren't for the fact that every Fallout game before this, hell, every Elder Scrolls game before this, didn't railroad you so hard, maybe you'd have a point.

But you don't, and Fallout 4 is a massive step backwards as a roleplaying game. The combat improved, power armor got cooler, and they introduced a build mode. Everything else got less good. And everything else is what makes Fallout Fallout.

In Fallout New Vegas if you found the turret control terminal you could make the turrets be on your side. They would aways get blown up almost immediately but it was a good way to soften up enemies.

You can in Fallout 4 too if you find the right issue of Total Hack and use the holotape. I never really bothered with it though, I can't be bothered to scroll through the list of pointless holotapes I've hoarded.

If you can get to the terminal, sometimes it's fun to do that in a building filled with enemies. I've heard lots of surprise coming from raiders when I reprogram their turrets to fire on friendlies.

Did this in the Dunwich mining place. Hilarity ensues.

That was the most egregious aspect of the game to me. The only changes they made to the interface made it significantly worse, they might as well have just left it alone.

At one point, I said, "Fuck this" and went to dump all my unwanted holotapes in a container in Sanctuary. That's when I discovered that 40 of them were quest items for quests I'd completed ages ago, which meant that I could never drop them.

Fucking Bethsoft.

I've beaten it twice and never found that one

Yeah, I feel like it's kind of dumb to hide a game mechanic in a tiny little magazine in some random place. Heck, at first glance, it kind of looks like random debris.

Anyways, Wildwood Cemetery's where you'll find it.

Something like that should just be a perk. +2% energy damage, fine, hide it in a magazine

You can do that with robots now, but it's really slow.

Having the ability to hack robots is absolutely essential before beginning the Mechanist quests. Tankbots turning on their companions is wonderful to watch.

I don't know if it was a glitch or if it's been fixed, but I could hack robots from afar by pointing a gun a them back when I was going through it. Find the legendary sitting off on his own and send him on a rampage. Then tell him to self destruct.

It was a glitch, sadly. I wish it wasn't, seeing that the rest of the pacification perks work from a distance.

[–]Buster_Hazelwood 0ポイント1ポイント  (0子コメント)

It's been patched. You got to get real up and close now to do it.

The biggest flaw is that you can't smash a turret with melee since it always blows up in your face... smashing electronics and machinery does not work that way.

Their theory on that is that everything that is still working is nuclear powered.

Except the turret blows smoke - it's most likely running on gasoline...

They mostly are, they need oil to build.

Any machine with moving parts needs oil. That doesn't mean it is powered by it.

True but they sound like a combustion engine though. Even look it too.

IKR?

The uh...sound of a generator sort of tells us that, too.

Even the turrets that clearly runs a combustion engine, despite being hooked up to an electric network?

do you see a handcrank on those turrents?

yeah if nuclear power plants are still operational and running a power grid why can't we connect/attach power to them?

In the Fallout universe, nuclear technology is very advanced and the semi conductor was never developed. Everything still running is powered by miniature nuclear reactors, not a large unified grid.

Then why can't we build those? We have "nuclear materials" in the board game and those rivers and concrete etc.

Because Fallout 4 is only vaguely aware of what franchise it's in.

You can. Fusion generators were added in the 2nd DLC.

fusion cores should provide this purpose but instead they run out after a short use when we use them because...fallout magic...after lasting hundreds of years then go from 100% to 0% in a matter of minutes (hours in real life game time i guess)

To be only slightly fairer, powering half a dozen edison bulbs (how do those last so long?) is a lot different than a robot exoskeleton.

fallout magic is a wonderful thing. must be the nirnroots influence pulling in scrolls magic

Shoddycast made a really good video explaining why fusion cores would run out

I'm gonna go ahead and call shenanigans anyway because other peoples power cores last forever. When I put it in a power suit, put a person in said power suit, then get in a power suit myself. My suit will run dry but there's charge will be exactly where i left it.

In previous games it was made quite obvious that those in positions of power and control had the means to find, repair, and maintain such reactors. This explains why the Enclave and Brotherhood of Steel are pretty much the only main factions that are able to have working Power Armor, usable transportation, and expansive bases such as the Oil Rig, Raven Rock, and the Citadel for some examples. Even the second most technologically powerful forces in the Fallout lore such as the New California Republic and Mr. House don't have such an expansive network of technological resources; House comes close but even at his best he can only reasonably take care of New Vegas and nothing else. hardly anyone else had the technological capacity and ability to enforce their power over the use of working Pre-War nuclear technology. And even if someone did manage to get a reactor running, the Enclave or Brotherhood of Steel would be quick to come in and swipe it away, as per dictated by their lore.

But no, running power armor is easy enough for a raider to do and powering it with fusion cores is easy enough to accomplish when every major seller has multiple fusion cores on them.

Put a mod request in at Nexus, someone would probably be able to figure this out

Agreed. Maybe after disabling the turrets, you could open them like a drawer and retrieve better components than you would get if you destroyed them.

Or set them for Settlers to pick up after the fact, like ballooning shit in MGSV.

I like to think of it where a turret control would be in real life...behind the defenses. Bethesda just likes to mess with us.

Playstyle choice isn't a flaw.

Or give you the ability to mess with their targeting systems so that they'll turn and blow each other up.

Excellent idea for a mod, seems easy enough to implement.

That's how KOTOR did things.

[–]Glitsh 0

I have some strong nostalgia when it comes to KOTOR. Few games pulled me in that hard and made me care about what was going on.

Or if after hacking there was a change alliance option to make them friendly to the player and shoot whoever set them up instead.

In Fallout 3 and New Vegas you could set the turrets to fire on enemies, so sneaking past them and hacking them was very useful. The turret controls were also in front of the turrets a lot of the time, so the whole "sneak past" thing wasn't as big of a problem.

The only turrets that I find are reasonable to disable are in the arcjet labs mission with Danse. The terminal is in an easy to access area and deactivating them would save some time on the mission.

Only thing is Danse really wants to blow them up and he won't continue the mission until you reactivate them.

Or be able to make them fire on the group of super mutants that have somehow made friends with them.

If you find a turret control magazine you can set turrets to attack other people so there is a reason to do it. But in a way it is realistic, why put turret controls in a place that the person they are attacking could easily turn them off.

I liked how you could turn the turrets on your enemies in fallout 3. There'd be a group of raiders hiding safely down a hallway behind their turret, then I come around and BOOM death by your own turret

[–]Sanwi 0

Why would you dismantle a working turret? Just take it for yourself.

That would be cool. Fellow coders, ready to make a mod?
