It would be better if there was no Shaun in it

[–]43-8and55-10Nyeheh, there's the high roller! 25

Yeah this was main problem in story. I felt no attachment to Shaun, I barely felt anything with Nora.

What I usually hear is that if you have a son/husband/wife, you generally feel a lot more sympathetic. Since most of us are unmarried with no kids that doesn't work for us.

As a married person with a kid, this isn't true (at least for me.) I felt sympathetic in the way of "I bet my character probably cares" but I sure didn't. They should have watched Pixar's Up first - that's how you build a tragedy :(

I still remember seeing that as a kid. Cried like a bitch in the first 5 minutes. Mom had to take me out of the theater (theatre?) because I was wailing too loud. Never finished it lol

Shit, I'm a grownup and I about cried myself.

I have to disagree with this point. I believe that like most characters, the response is illicit we due to how well written or acted the character is and not based on the relationship to the player character.

As a young single person with no kids I didn't really care for Shaun or Nora at all. On the flip side however, The Last of Us evoked an incredibly strong emotional response from me with Sarah, Joel, and Ellie. Even though I was closer in age to Ellie than Joel when I first played it, I still felt incredibly strong paternal instincts for this artificial character. The reason is that The Last of Us managed to make her so realistic and had you connect with her through superb writing and voice acting.

Shaun on the other hand is a baby who you don't interact with at all until you meet him and he's a condescending old man.

"Here's a wife/husband and child, you can interact with them! NOW LOVE THEM SO WE CAN MAKE THIS TRAGIC!"

They should've done what they did in F3 and show your character in different points of their life before the war.

Or even show our involvement IN the war, let us choose our fighting "style" which would then give us a perk - like "Steady Aim - Aiming through a scope is more steady." for a sniper character.

[–]AnastraceOld World Flag 5

That would have been interesting. Of course, what would you do for Nora? She was a lawyer, so social bonuses?

No idea, I honestly forgot to think about that.

Just make her a solider. They met on the front. She got preggers and got sent home. He stayed a little longer or something.

But traditionalist American values!

Meh, even then I only cared about James because of Liam Neeson. Building the game around the characters family should just be avoided tbh.

[–]AnastraceOld World Flag 4

I dunno, I felt a connection to my survivor, but the other one was more like, oh hi Nate, let me just pry this ring off your finger, and I'll see you in hell.

Shaun though, I was interested in his story but I still to this day can not figure out his mini me obsession. Recapturing childhood? Making a gift for his parent? Which would be creepy as hell btw. I don't think synths y'know grow up, so you would have an eternal child.

My only regret is that I couldn't take Synth Shaun out behind the workbench and then mysteriously emerge with a bunch of spare parts.

I took along time to customize Nora, so I did end up feeling sad; that being said I really felt nothing for Shaun.

This isn't unique to Fallout 4 though. Water chip, dad, Platnum chip, you could make the same argument for any of those games.

[–]43-8and55-10Nyeheh, there's the high roller! 0

I would agree with you about dad in FO3 but even then there was more development with that relationship. As for the platinum chip you were motivated by its mystery or at least that was the case for me.

The dialogue would be better served if they just made farm animal sounds.

The story was just s flip flop of what Fallout 3 was, they just both felt way too similar to each other it was extremely underwhelming

[–]AngryArmourFollower Technophile 2

We've searched for our Father, we've searched for our Son. Fallout 6 will have us as a synth searching for our Spirit.

I love fo4. Still having a blast almost everyday.

But I feel like expectations were so high that it was inevitable that people would feel disappointed.

No doubt, if half life 3 is ever made, it will never live up to the expectations of fans.

[–]GingerSwanGNRNORMIES GET OUT OF NECROPOLIS REEEE[S] 2

yeah, NV set the bar really high. I guess we all forgot that Emil's lead writer now, not Kirkbride.

Can we petition to bring him back? Nit only is he just a better writer but he also basically invented all of the lore for the elder scrolls series, I want him back as lead writer man.

[–]Fucking_Your_MomEnclave 1ポイント2ポイント  (0子コメント)

I don't feel that it was solely due to expectations being too high. It was simply the fact that Fallout 4 was trying to be something it wasn't. RPG elements were completely stripped in favor of better gunplay and combat. And while Mountain Dew-sipping Bethesdrone dudebros might shitpost on here saying "lol guyz fallout 4 was gud, fuck the haterzzz!!!", I'm sitting here waiting for Obsidian to do a spinoff.

Except with Herve in the mix you won't set yourself up for disappointment. You know Bethesda does the same but you keep hoping someone gets struck by lightning and comes up with a good idea. But no.

It was not below expectations.

Well, that completely depends on what your expectations were. I'd imagine yours would be different from others.

[–]GingerSwanGNRNORMIES GET OUT OF NECROPOLIS REEEE[S] 16

It fell flat in the RPG and story department. Gameplay and graphics were superb, buuuut they aren't why many people play Fallout.

[–]Lemmypemmycheck your smoothskin privilege 1

It was an good shooter, it just wasn't an RPG. It just wasn't what the fallout fans wanted, it's not a bad game, it's just a bad fallout game.

[–]GingerSwanGNRNORMIES GET OUT OF NECROPOLIS REEEE[S] 14

I had fun with it for what it was. Basically more of Fallout 3 but with Skyrims engine, and a wack upgrade system.

[–]FEMALES_PM_ME_UR_PMS 15ポイント16ポイント  (0子コメント)

It was definitely below expectations if you were expecting a decent rpg

[–]Fucking_Your_MomEnclave 3ポイント4ポイント  (1子コメント)

It's really hard to finish with you blatantly interrupting the circlejerk... Please be more of a TRU FAN thanks

Every time I come to this sub it seems most people, whatever there opinion may be, think they are a victim of a sub wide bias and are talking counter to the "circle jerk". It's gotten a little boring.

Seems to me it would just be easier to contribute posts and upvote where you feel appropriate, people may disagree with you but you can still keep posting. Worst comes to the worst then just check the sub at a different time of day, I've noticed it's had a funny effect on which opinions come forward.

[–]NordicIceNipplesBounty Hunter 7

Definetly was. Better gunplay and graphics then new Vegas but in every other way New Vegas was superior.

Fallout 4 was disappointing

[–]rather_be_a_hobbit -2ポイント-1ポイント  (3子コメント)

Orange as far as the eye can see and a story where you have to buy DLC to actually expand upon and finish. Not too mention there were more bugs in NV than any other fallout game.

Made in a year. Pushed out early by bethesda softworks.

DLC that exspands the story while having uniques themes and stories of thier own? Tell me what was autamotron about? Or wasteland workshop or what the hell is far harbor tying to convey to us as players.

Orange and amber coolers in a desert? Who fuckin knew it m80.

Ya know it's not like Bethesda was like "take it or leave it" with the development schedule, it was a contract, Obsidian was just a bit over zealous and didn't give themselves time for polish and fine tuning, no one is the bad guy here. And some people get mad at Bethesda because they promised Obsidian a bonus if they got a certain metacritic score (forget what) and they juuust missed it so no bonus. But think about it, an 88% won't give you the gpa bump that a 90% will so once again no one's the bad guy.

[–]rather_be_a_hobbit -3ポイント-2ポイント  (0子コメント)

You can defend the game all you want but the entire backstory of the courier and their actual story was split up into all of the DLC and finally unfolded during the last DLC. That never sat right and people blindly defend the cash grab that it was.

Definitely wasn't. "Fallout 4 was disappointing" for you. I am having a blast.

[–]BarbaTenusSapientesI got that Old World Blues 5

It was. Something can be a disappointment and still be good. It's a good game, but a terrible Fallout game.

It wasn't. There is no such thing as a "good Fallout game" or a terrible one, Fallout 4 is as Fallout as New vegas or Brotherhood of Steel. It is either a good game, or a bad game, and opinions are personal, it's a bad practice to deal in absolutes.

It was not below expectations.

it's a bad practice to deal in absolutes

Pick one.

[–]GingerSwanGNRNORMIES GET OUT OF NECROPOLIS REEEE[S] 1

"only sith deal in absolutes"

[–]NordicIceNipplesBounty Hunter 9

Fallout is a post apocalyptic RPG-FPS. (nowadays)

In Fallout 4 they focused only on the FPS side and completely removed the abillity to make your own character.

They removed skills and skillchecks. When you level up now you pick a perk and you're done. In previous games it was so much more complex and it made you invest in your character and encouraged several playthroughs with different builds.

Also fallout 4's dialogue system = Yes , maybe(yes) , sacrastic yes, More info before i say yes.

This is basically how i percieve fallout 4 compared to other games.

A baby is drowning in the lake:

-Fallout 1

  1. Ask for more information

  2. Agree to help

  3. Decide not to help

  4. Accidentally say something that pisses the NPC off, failing the quest

  5. Reveal too much information about yourself, causing the Super Mutants to track your vault more easily

-Fallout 2

  1. Ask for more information

  2. Agree to help

  3. Decide not to help

  4. Accidentally say something that pisses the NPC off, failing the quest

  5. Pop culture reference about the baby

-Fallout 3

  1. Yes, I will save the baby

  2. Depends on the caps

  3. I will not save the baby

  4. [Intelligence] The baby is drowning

-Fallout New Vegas 1. I will save the baby

  1. I will not save the baby

  2. [Barter 30] Double the caps and I'll save the baby

  3. [Medicine 30] Thanks to my medical knowledge, I will easily be able to save the baby

  4. [Survival 15/30] Uh... yeah, I totally know how to swim

-Fallout 4 1. Yes

  1. No (Yes)

  2. Sarcastic (Yes)

  3. Hate babies

Fallout 4 is a good game but an awful fallout game.

EDIT: Love how the fanboys are downvoting without even reading it.
