Rewatched all the Goals last year. Thoughts. (self.reddevils)

Just recently starting following this board so sorry if this is shit, but besides the Pogba news it's slow and the seasons almost upon us and I'm PUMPED!

Here are a few thoughts I had about who should play coming in to this year. I realize these are just highlights of goals but I feel playstyle and coaching last year may have shrouded some talent on the squad. Feel free to watch and give your own feedback.

TL:DR; Martial beast. Mata good. Rooney scores. Memphis close. Hopeful for Shaw. Need MF, CB, RB Maybe? Attacking players were fine.

  1. Martial is pure and utter class. Scorer/Playmaker. Must be on the field.

  2. Mata is great in the middle. I would love to see what he can do behind Zlatan up front. At first I was ready to let him go, despite him being an awesome dude. Now I've changed my mind, I hope we keep him.

  3. Mou hit the nail on the head. Rooney still has the nose for goal. He's not as effective running with the ball but when he's in front of net he's deadly and can play a man in on goal. I know it won't happen but him and Rashford as a pair could be interesting. I'm not so sure Zlatan comes in and is better than him in the BPL right away. Scary to think Rashford could be our best option. Not hating on Zlatan, just need to see how he does first.

  4. I think we were fine up front, we need a midfield. I think that's where we struggled last year along with CB and LB (Shaw). If we shore those up and change style of play I think we can win quite a few games. Of course, you don't decline Zlatan on the free but I don't think he was a huge need. We have guys who put the ball in the net we just people to get it there.

  5. Memphis isthisclose. He has talent. I think he suffered the most last year from our style. He's great playing with speed and space and there was none. I remember countless times him running toward/right into our own players. The few moments there was space, he created. Another year under his belt and a little more dedication, who knows.

  6. I really hope Shaw comes back in his early-season form from last year. If he doesn't get injured I'm not 100% sure LVG gets sacked. (For better or worse) I forgot how well he and Memphis seemed to gell last year.

  7. We would lack speed but Rooney and Zlatan with Mata behind would score goals IMO. Of course that leaves Martial out/defending more which cannot happen.

That's not the point. The point is we didn't score enough goals last season, so the video should've been longer.

Yeah, we really struggled to score last year. When there's a sequence of a single highlight from a game that was a missed chance, you realize how depressing it was around Christmas when we had the run of 0-0 games.

haha unfortunately very true. This was more to highlight the fact, in my opinion, we have quality scoring just not enough creators in the midfield.

I don't fully agree with this space myth regarding Memphis. I can remember countless times he had a lot of space and he messed up a chance disastrously. He is better with space but still needs to improve massively

Game against arsenal where he gave bellerin a roasting. He's young he's a winger,he'll make mistakes and be infuriating but there's definitely a player there is just a case of a manager believing in him and letting him play his natural game.every time he played and didn't score or create then lvg would drop him. You could see he struggled for confidence on pitch

I agree Memphis at his best is scary, very much a confidence player. I hope Mou gives him some time because Memphis can be worldclass.

He was getting brought on worth 5 minutes to go and over doing everything to try and get into lvg good books. When he would get a start he might keep his spot for 2 games and be dropped again. That would kill a young players confidence

This is a great point. Even when he was playing awful I still had the feeling that, given 90ish minutes, he would break through eventually.

Players like him need plenty of game time and no matter what happens leave him in there for a good stretch. That's how confidence builds. If he puts it altogether there's a serious player there. Once shaw went out inbred he struggled. Shaw bombing down the line crafted more room for him.

Understandable. Maybe it's more of he would start to go and all the players around him just stood. I don't know, there just seems to be quality in him. Just needs to find it more consistently.

Seeing this video shows me that Memphis was really good during the start of the season because of Shaw. Luke Shaw was the reason Memphis had the opportunities that he did and why he scored goals. He had many diverging runs that put holes in defenses. After Luke broke his leg, everything went to shit. The whole squad was below average until Rashford came into the first team. With Shaw being back and him being healthy the whole season (hopefully), our attack and defense will be very good.

Good point. Also, it made Darmian move to LB a lot of the time which hurt as well. Not ready to give up on him either.

Doesn't quite align w/ what you're trying to go for here, but I seriously feel Blind's goal vs Liverpool is hugely underrated. Because a certain young Frenchman also scored on that day, it will likely be forgotten

In my mind, it was close to being the goal of the season based on its occasion, opponents, timing and execution.

They did. The weird thing is I don't remember that from last year, I think I was too focused on some of the terrible play by Rooney ala the walker goal and him letting the ball get stuck under him right in front of net.

The Christmas season was enough that I totally forgot we started off pretty well. Strange, strange season. Rooney definitely had an up and down season, moments of pure class and moments of pure wank.
