And plenty of it can be avoided with a touch of thoughtfulness.

People drop things without purpose off of boats, cars, buses, bicycles etc all the damn time.

I'd agree with you if she mindlessly threw it behind her, but she aimed for the boat and she missed.

"I tried" doesn't sound like a particularly compelling excuse to me. If I try to smack a baseball off of somebody's head with a metal bat and they end up with a concussion, I've intentionally done something stupid, and caused somebody harm, regardless of how hard I tried to be stupid successfully. Obviously, there's a bit of a difference in severity of harm between these two cases, but that particular difference is not really the point.

I doubt it's this instance alone that's gonna sink our planet.

It never is, and yet we're sinking our planet all the same.

If this were my friends and I we would have absolutely gone back after it to see if it was there if we missed the initial throw back in the boat.

Far easier to just manage your trash better. It's admirable that you and your friends are conscientious enough to go back for the can, but in my experience most people don't seem to concerned over their behavior when it comes to pollution. That's what we're criticizing here.

You can all lose sleep over the can that may or may not be at the bottom of a lake. I'm not.

And there's the problem. People not giving a shit about what's at the bottom of their lakes. We're not "losing sleep" over one can, but we are concerned with the health of our planet. We get that it's just one can, but it's the cumulative effect of this mindset that one can doesn't really matter. Nothing wrong with /u/BlackDeath3 expressing concern over this.

Shit does happen, but that doesn't equate to shit being unpreventable, or just behaving responsibly. And that's the point these guys are making. That there's a difference between things happening that are outside of your control, and behaving responsibly to control what you can and act ethically.

Grow up.

I think he's more grown up than the girl in the video. And you for that matter. He's environmentally conscientious. And he's not saying we need to go on a witch hunt for this girl, he's criticizing what she did because on a daily basis we make decisions that exchange the health of our planet for the convenience and comfort of our lives. And we are slowly but surely paying for it. Nothing wrong in pointing that out.

There are far more things to get upset about.

Irrelevant. There's always more things to be outraged about. Bone cancer in children. Civil forfeiture. Child slavery in Africa. Zoolander 2. That doesn't mean we can't deal with the issues we are facing here and now. And let's be clear: pollution is one of the few issues that we all face as a species.

I get that it's just one can. But /u/BlackDeath3 made a great point: it's not one can that's going to ruin the planet, its the mindset that our individual actions don't have any impact. It's the cumulative effect of that mindset that is harming Earth, or more specifically making it uninhabitable for us. It's a sobering reality to think about, even if we are impressed by this girl's core strength. We don't need to let it drive our every action, but we should always keep it in the back of our minds, and act accordingly.
