I'm not responsible for shitty fact-checking, man. I never denied that was a troll post. I've been discussing this movie in this sub for a month, everybody knew it was an obvious jab at the reaction to the reviews and the positive ones being buried in/r/movies.

Honestly, I'd barely call it work anymore. It's become so easy. Also, I've made so much money I could probably just retire if I didn't love the job so much.

It's been a long, hard road. My wife left me because she couldn't handle it. Said I was "obsessed". She'd call me late at night when I was shilling overtime, crying. Pleading. "This is the man you married", I'd say. "You knew I was a shill when we met". When she took the baby and moved in with her sister I was in a bad way. Drank a lot. Just became a shell of the shill I once was, for a while.

Then one morning I get the call - "Better_Butter321, it's me, Mrs. Sony. We're releasing a feminist/SJW propaganda movie and we need you to shill for us. Just one last time." I threw the phone against the wall in a rage. "I'm out! This job cost me everything!" I screamed. I went into hiding and kept a low profile. Backpacked across Central America to find myself. In Panama I holed up in a quiet monastery for a few months. Hungry and broken, the monks took me in like I was one of their own. The head monk, who they called "Jiff-Jaff" saw something in me. One day he brought me to the mountain top and gave me some kind of drink that the locals believed opened doors to a spiritual plane. At first I felt nothing, but after some time I began to experience an awakening in myself. The world around me appeared to pixelate, then fragment into the consistency of sand, sinking into an abyss below my feet. I was suddenly floating, terrified. I tried to open my mouth to scream only to find that it was stuffed with $100 bills. A bright light surrounded me and I heard a voice "It is you", it said. "I have been waiting for you for some time now". The light condensed slowly into a figure. A figure I recognized. "Paul Feig?" Is that you?"

"It is I", he said. "You are needed. Our feminist crusade can not be completed without you." I was in shock. "But, Paul, I don't even know if I can shill anymore. It's been so long." He leaned down and kissed my forehead and immediately, with a shock, my entire life flashed before my eyes in what seemed like a millisecond. I awoke in a cold sweat. And I could feel it...I knew how to shill again, better than ever before in fact.

I packed my bags at the monastery, said my goodbyes to Jiff-Jaff and the others and returned to America to fullfill my destiny.

Even more still...it's not like he couldn't have used any number of other examples from /r/ghostbusters as the ammo for that.

I've got to be honest, I really kind of wish that they had latched on to any number of the actual ridiculous outrage and conspiracy theory posts rather then my stupid troll post. It does just show that some media outlets aren't bothering to do any fact checking, can't deny that. But a lot of the articles I've seen have at least used other, legit examples, of which there are plenty.

But you're assuming that the positive reviews aren't honest. That shows a bias in and of itself because you just can't fathom that anyone would enjoy this movie. None of the 6/10 reviews are saying that this is the greatest film of all time. Hell, not even the people trolling this sub are saying that it's great (probably because most haven't seen it yet). The only reason why it's being rubbed in people's faces is because they lost their minds over how it was going to be the worst disaster ever made long before they ever saw it. It was an unfair jump to conclusions, it turns out that it looks like it was wrong, at least according to most critics, and now it's being ridiculed. I'm not sure what people expected.

The drama and attack on fans this movie brought

Again. The community brought this on themselves. The whole thing about Feig and the cast calling "all GB fans" sexists is a flat out lie. Some of the media definitely spun it that way, which is an unfair generalization, but Feig and the cast very specifically singled out the sexists and online bullies - they never said "everyone who doesn't like the trailer" or "everyone who doesn't like the idea of a reboot". Not once.

But others are taking it as a victory.

You know, I feel like people maybe wouldn't be treating simply decent reviews of the movie as a victory if there hadn't been such an absurd hate campaign leveled at it for months. You can't really kick and scream and obsess over your hate for something you haven't seen for months on end and then get pissy about it when people rub it in your face that you overreacted.

Nope. The actors didn't either.

They were on Jimmy Kimmel and he specifically made a joke about the people who were being sexist about the casting. Not all GB fans, not all people who disliked the trailer, not all people who dislike the reboot - just the ones who were tweeting and writing sexist shit.

Just like the other instance with Feig above the haters lied about it and said "They called everyone sexist!" Which is a really stupid lie to tell when everyone can just google the clip to see for themselves.

[–]Better_Butter321 20ポイント21ポイント  (0子コメント)

In all honesty, I think the most egregious thing is lying about what Paul Feig and the cast have said in order to position themselves as victims.

The cast appeared on Jimmy Kimmel and he, very specifically, made a remark targeted at the people who were angry about the female cast and acting misogynistic. And the response from these guys is..."They called all Ghostbusters fans sexist! They attacked us!" Which is a really lazy lie considering that anyone can just look up the clip and see that they didn't say anything about "All Ghostbusters fans" or "All people who don't like the trailer" or "All people who don't like remakes", which is what these guys are feebly attempting to spin it as.

Paul Feig, after being continually attacked on Twitter and watching the same thing happen to his cast for months, said, exactly "Geek Culture is home to some of the biggest assholes I've ever met in my life" Guess how the community reacted? "OMG guise! Paul Feig literally called everyone on the planet an asshole for NO reason!!!"

/r/ghostbusters and the like really are the Tea Party of movie fandom.

EDIT - I want to add to this: they're also regularly lying about Murray being blackmailed into supporting this film.

In one of the Sony email leaks there's a conversation between two execs where one of them asks if they might be able to put legal pressure on Murray for continuing to refuse to appear in Ivan Reitman's "Ghostbusters 3". Not this movie. Ghostbusters 3. Further, while totally shitty, it's just a suggestion that's posed in an email and isn't proof of anything but the fact that the suggestion was made...about a different movie.

To be fair, it's not like this sub hasn't given an insane amount of material to work with. Outside of the brigading admission in it, that troll post is pretty easily interchangeable with any number of the insane conspiracy posts, denial and desperation here. Hell there was a legitimate thread posted shortly after that from a regular contributor that essentially said "Don't worry, guys! There's a still a chance that it's bad. Remember, Amazing Spider-Man 2 had high RT scores to start too. Just to ease any minds". And it's exactly this sort of thing that I was commenting on - the fact that there is such a need from some people for something to fail that they need to be reassured against it potentially being better than they thought. Like...that's insane.

When did I say that they were "overwhelmingly positive"?

It's actually 79% now. Regardless of whether they gave it a 9/10 or a 6/10, the fact is that 79% of the reviewers who have seen the film have given it a positive review.

I honestly don't care one way or another if it's the greatest movie of all time, the worst, or just average. The only thing I find interesting is how this sub has sworn up and down for months that this movie would be absolutely abysmal and fail with critics. And now that that doesn't seem to be the case everyone is desperately trying to rationalize away the idea that people seem to be enjoying this movie, even just as a casual summer blockbuster.

Assuming that most of them are like me, they just find the the whole thing fascinating. I mean, you have to admit, the behaviour is really, really odd. As soon as the film was announced it began being demonized, then as things progressed it turned into an obsession where people claimed to want nothing to do with the movie while simultaneously seeking out every bit of news or media they could about it to try and reaffirm their position that it was going to be awful. Most people, if they see a trailer they think is bad, will say "Man, this looks like shit. I'm not interested", but the response here has been "See! The trailer was awful! This movie is terrible! Let's break down literally every piece of banal minutiae we can!".

Now the reviews have come out and it's all turned into denial and more rage. It really is fascinating behavior. It's hilarious, for sure, but it's also just really interesting.
