AR and VR are very different. Pokemon go is AR. :(
Nope, VR and AR are two names for the same thing. The only metric that turns VR into AR is how much of the real world you let into the virtual landscape. But they aren't separate technologies, not fundamentally.
Think of it like a gradient, with complete VR on one side and... well, boring old reality on the other.
VR stands for virtual reality (Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, Gear VR, PSVR), putting on a headset that blinds your from real life and then being able to see a virtual world around. AR stands for Augmented Reality(Hololens, Cast AR), it adds things onto the real world, pokemons are added to your real world with the camera.
It would be VR if you had a headset on and you were in the Pokemon world.

This guy gets it! AR is where computer rendering modifies reality. VR is where computer rendering completely replaces reality.

Again, nope. The Vive, for example, has a camera, and the Vive light projectors allow you to blend the real world with the virtual, which many Vive experiences do leverage. Does that mean the Vive is an AR device?
AR is an arbitrary distinction. Shen is right to use VR as a blanket term.
People who say "VR and AR - those are separate things!" aren't really thinking about the technology, they're just thinking about their own limited experience with the applications they've seen.
The camera on the Vive is just a passthrough mode, like on the gear VR, it has nothing to do with AR. No game blends your real lie space with games afaik, the camera is only used when you activate it to see through the headset.
I own a Vive and a Gear VR btw.
You're wrong on all counts. The camera can be used to map data into the game, it is accessible to developers.
The light projectors are almost always used to modify in-game parameters based on your environment. That is essential to the Vive "roomscale" experience.
Just because you own these devices clearly doesn't mean you understand the technology.
What the hell are you talking about ? The camera on the headset does nothing, the lighthouses are just there to track your headset and your controllers, it's lasers, they don't map anything yet since you have to set the limits of your play space with the controllers, and even if they did, it still wouldn't have anything to do with AR.
A quick google search would prove that you're wrong, stop trying to be a smartass !
Nope, wrong again - you really should read up for an hour or two before responding. The lighthouse sensors are used as virtual space delimiters, which allows fictional reality to respond to the real-world space in which you are moving. They are effectively the same as AR markers. In fact, Valve used AR markers for a long time before perfecting the lighthouse concept! Fictional objects can even be displayed in their place, which many experiences do presently.
VR and AR are two names for the same thing. They're arbitrary distinctions that were made before we understood what we were doing. Eventually, these terms will stop being used entirely, or possibly, VR will be used exclusively.

These are naive distinctions made in a nascent period of technology. But the two halves of the house have come together. You're missing the forest for the trees.
No. That means the Vive is a device that can do both AR and VR.
The HoloLens and Google Glass are AR devices. Vive can do both, but is primarily focused on VR at the moment. Rift is solely VR.
Edit: To add, there are "mixed reality" applications that incorporate both AR and VR and would be more akin to what you are describing. Just as I wouldn't call the Yelp Monocle app a VR app, I wouldn't call Hoverjunkers an AR app. The terms refer to different types of experiences, though they can be blended together.

That is a totally arbitrary distinction that you're making, which ignores the technology involved. The HoloLens and Vive are fundamentally doing the same thing, but you've established mental walls to categorize them differently.
The technology is extremely different. Have you used a HoloLens or Google Glass, or any non-mobile device for AR? The experience is drastically different than using a Vive or Rift.
With Vive/Rift, your vision is completely obstructed by the device. You cannot see the outside world unless the application provides that content. It's purpose is to create an alternate reality for the user.
With the HoloLens/Glass, the outside world is the focus, the device is transparent and it's purpose is to add information to the real world.

What about Vive experiences that map the roomscale space to modify the experience? That is all "AR" does, effectively.
As I said earlier, the Vive is a device that can do both AR and VR. Yours would be an example of an AR experience.
They are doing completely different things, AR and VR could not be further apart.
This is AR : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xgakdcEzVwg
This is VR : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SeeglXQ65GI (quick note in case you have a reall hard time with this, the person playing the game is standing up, in a 10 feet by 10 feet space, not an actual train station)
You're pointing out superficial, surface-level details. It's like saying time and space are two separate things, but we know they really aren't.
How does that have anything to do with the technology ? AR uses your real world to add things on it while still being able to interact with the real world. VR puts you into another reality, without being able to interact with the real world since you cannot see it anymore.
Seriously, watch a few videos and learn more about it before trying to educate people ...

The camera doesn't have 3d and is super low res. I use it to push my chair in and find my controller that isn't turned on yet.
So if it was 3D, the Vive would be an AR device?
Not just a 3d camera, a high res, low latency, calibrated camera. But yes, if the camera is off then it's vr, if that camera system is on then it's AR.
Well, surprise - the Vive already has a 3D camera system. Those dots all over the headset and its controllers are camera sensors. And they're always active.
Do you have a Vive? Your ignorance is appalling. Those aren't cameras. You can't even see through them.
You're arguing that the Vive isn't a VR-only device, not that VR and AR are the same thing.
Actually, between VR and AR is something called Mixed Reality. Pokemon GO is actually classified as mixed reality since it presents virtual objects that "interact" with the physical world.
I have used "Fictional Reality" to cover the polyreal spectrum. Granted, it doesn't sound technical enough to really catch on.
