Internationalism is strongly rooted in socialist ideology of opression of the working class, and under marxist principles, the working class must unite worldwide. (It didn't take long for marxists to reach the conclusion that to get all the working class to unite, you had to make them all share the same culture and language.)

Initially, Russian Communism was in favor of developping and maintaining national identities and languages of annexed nations under the reasoning that it was the bourgeoisie that forced Russian language onto the working class of neighboring nations. There never was any real effort to get the local ruling Russian elite to integrate to the nation where they lived, but hostility to, say, Lithuanian, was minimal... at start.

The USSR quickly figured national identities and different national languages was inconvinient to their political project and started to agressively supress them by making Russian the language of instruction everywhere to assimilate kids, and with russian language PR towards adults to soften them up to the idea their language was inferior and their kids would be victims if they spoke it, andpromote what essentially boiled down to russian-based assimilation policies.

China did the same with Mandarin.

For the socialist and globalist utopias to progress, nations must be dismantled, including borders and language barriers, as those prevent assimilation into one single global identity.

Mono-nationalism describes best that form of ''pushed-too-far internationalism''. When it's not about cooperation between nations anymore, but hostility to the existence of nations.
