That WILL happen IRL too at some point judging by how things develop now. People will be genetically "branded" at/before birth so that their body rejects off-brand organs or even off-brand medicine. Medical companies will earn gazillions and normal people will pay the price whether they like to or not since it's their only option.

Someone's been watching too much Repo: The Genetic Opera. In all seriousness, though, pharmaceutical companies would probably try to do this if it was at all possible, but it isn't currently...and probably never will be.

But.... Zydrate! It comes in a little glass vial!

but it isn't currently...and probably hopefully never will be.

Little correction there. Considering the level technology advances at I don't dare using the "probably" word, but I certainly hope that my scenario is beyond even future generations to achieve.

Just wanted to say you don't deserve all the downvotes from people who have their head stuck in their asses.

Thank you. My comment may be bloody cynical, but seeing what proportions monetization takes (elderly and medical care and schools, anyone?) and what freedom financial institutions have (too big to fail, eternal risk-taking with zero responsibility, etc) I'm hardly making up anything outlandish.

The mere fact that the standard practice in the pharma industry is for one company to have a monopoly (or close to a monopoly) on new drugs for a period of time should cause people concern.

I think I'm a lot more open to what you're saying because I've been playing a lot of Deus Ex lately. Touches on a lot of the same themes.

Why would a company invest billions into rnd if as soon as they discover a new drug, any other company could start producing it without having to pay for all the rnd costs. The pharma industry isnt perfect, but you have no clue what youre talking about.

Except I already know about what you just posted, so I have about the same clue as you do.

I never said that the monopoly factor was inherently wrong. But there are side effects (no pun intended) to that approach. Need I remind you of the recent controversy regarding the AIDS drug that was hugely overpriced?

"I never said that the monopoly factor was inherently wrong. "

Are you retarded?

Cause for concern =/= inherently wrong. I was just saying people should be aware. Fuck off with your needless hostility.
