This is fantastic. After all that horror and carnage this men knew they were witnessing something momentous, but I doubt even one of them could fathom what the long term effects of this single action would be. Sucks to be the guys in the chairs missing out.

I always get irritated with people like this. Too cool, to get into it with the crowd. Just gonna sit there because they are to insecure to get into something. You don't have to act like a buffoon but sometimes its okay to get excited.

What do you have in mind by this?

WWII and everything subsequent to that; the Cold War.

You're saying that the Treaty of Versailles caused the Second World War? How?

It was reviled in Germany because of how harsh it was. Hitler liked to call it the Diktat, and that helped him grab power.

Germany hated it because they got all the blame for the war. Italy and Japan were mad because they didn't get what the allies promised them if they joined.

What was so harsh about it?

Is "Nazis were angry about it" really solid evidence that it was a "harsh" treaty? I mean Nazis were also angry that Jews secretly ran the world and schemed to annihilate the German race through diluting the purity of its bloodline. It doesn't seem like Nazi anger is necessarily a good guide to reality.

It wasn't the Nazis in special, the whole German people felt humiliated because of the treaty. The Nazis used that sentiment amongst other things to gain the support of the German people.

The reparations drew Germany into a big depression. The Great Depression shortly after made it even worse, to the point where German currency was almost literally useless. Hitler promised (and succeeded) to bring Germany out of this crisis and make Germany a great European power.

They weren't decisively defeated in battle by the entente, so many Germans thought it was unfair and harsh to give up so much land/money.

You're really saying it didn't?

I'm just curious to hear how the Treaty of Versailles caused the Second World War m8

Its harshness definitely impacted Germany and its people. A prime environment to get swept into a certain way of thinking due to emotion.

How was it economically harsh on Germany?

a) learn to google

b) Germany was required to pay back all damages caused by the war

c) German government had to give up land, people, resources, and basically printed money to cover the amounts owed

d) this lead to hyperinflation (people were literally burning german currency for heat)

e) google for more info

The reparation costs demanded by countries like France shamed and ruined Germany. They were nearly impossible for Germans to pay.

As a bonus, Hitler fought in WW1 and almost died in it. He got to power on a message that sounds something like ''They (The Entante) wanted to crush us. Their demands after war were meant to bury us, make us their colonnial country. We'll show them what happens when you shame the Aryan race.'' For a population crushed by reparation costs, low morale derived from the post-WW1 attitude, and who felt that their culture was being opressed, Hitler's message sounded like a godsent. And it stuck.

All the damage done by nations like AusHun were swiped away. WW1 Germany's loss was used as an excuse by the other world powers to attempt to crush it and its power.
