Blackett and Varela make sense. They're young but mostly developed at this point and we have a lot of other young defenders behind them.

Would be mad to sell Bastian...he can't do much on the field anymore, but he can be useful in certain situations and is a great dressing room presence. Also, we wouldn't get that much back for him at this point.

Blind is pretty valuable given how many spots he can play, and he's been super durable the last two years.

Mata was never a smart purchase - we overpaid then played him out of position. He'll get you goals and assists over the course of the season, but it comes at the cost of lost possessions and a team shape that has to compensate for him. His production can and should come from a more complete player. Lovable dude though.

Rojo was purchased for his versatility coming off the 2014 WC. Not good enough going forward to merit starting at fullback, and he seems a tad error prone at CB. Maybe worthwhile keeping for this season to see how we do with injuries, but that's probably it. Smalling and Bailly will be ahead of him, as will Jones if he's (somehow) fit. Then all our young centerbacks should be ready to displace him anyway.
