First off, if you saw the modqueue, you'd realise this isn't something that happens once, twice a day, once twice a week. The same type of threads are posted about 20 times a day, every day of the week, every week of the year.

Second is the effect of becoming a "popular" sub. You may have noticed a meme-style post popping up, and being removed a few times last night. There's a very specific reason for that, look at other small subs, that become "big". Any that start to allow low quality, meme-style posts nearly instantly lose their personality and what the sub is there for.

We're nearly at 45k subscribers, with nearly 1k on here at the moment. If you allow shit posts, often the majority of non-contributors may very well appreciate the shit post. But the valued contributors, and other people who make this place what it is? They'll be driven away nearly instantly. Again, just hop on other subs that have grown to be a "large" subreddit, or go to a forum that was once small, and personal, but grew to something much bigger.

If you let poor quality, or repetitive content in, your community dies. I've been there and seen it first hand more than once. There's rhyme and reason for everything that's done here, and while the mods get a lot of stick, for not being exactly what you want, you really wouldn't enjoy this place if the content that doesn't get through did.

Couldn't agree more.

I will refer you to what I said to D1784 in my earlier reply but what is the issue exactly with maybe 4 pages of content a day? Other subreddits have thousands of pages a day of content and at some point the moderation team has to accept that once we reach higher numbers of members we are going to receive a lot more posts and subsequently a drop in quality. We are not a forum!

Credit to all of the moderation team no doubt in their effort to keep the sub 'clean' but I honestly don't mind doing 4 clicks through 4 new pages to see more content on a daily basis - that is the reason I visit this sub after all.

It oversaturates the sub. Why would you want crap content? You're literally ripping apart the whole fundamental of reddit completely. A system that is proven to work. Regardless if something is even a tiny bit decent it won't get downvoted so much that I'll disappear. Even if a post sits at 0 why does it matter if it hasn't been deleted?

It sounds like you're saying eventually shitposts will take over because of the growing size, but I think that's bollocks, I'm pretty sure if they couldn't cope theyd just look for more mods.

I think I see many reasons why posts get downvoted. You're right, not everything needs to be news. It's that they are almost carbon copies of previous posts, or the information could be found with a simple search.

If you want to buy tickets, sure that's relevant to United, but you can find all the information you need from Google, or the search bar for the subreddit, where the question has been asked over and over.

If you browse /r/reddevils every day, you'll eventually get tired of someone asking for tickets, or asking who we should sign, etc, and they get downvoted. Now, the user may not know why, they may think they're being hard-done by. But to frequent users, they're bored of that kind of shit.

The same for people ordering shirts. When the new kit gets released, we get countless posts of people from overseas who are hyped about their new kit. That's great, seriously. But if you're browsing /new every minute of the day, and see 10 posts which are just a picture of a kit...You're gunna get tired of it.

I agree entirely with the research, things like 'Anyone know any manchester u bars in Taraz, Khazakstan' etc have no place on the sub and are a waste of the internet in general.

I don't think /r/reddevils being a gateway for ticket sales becoming a thing is a bad idea, maybe instead of removing this aspect we could offer an alternative. As a mod you would know better than I how to implement such a thing.

I also agree with the shirts thing, but again, at £50-60 each, it doesn't really matter if one person makes a post like this, because they won't be making another one for a while. People make posts like this not to show off, but to interact. I.e - What name did you get on the back /u/D1794? Naturally not everyone will interact with this post, but whoever had made it obviously didn't want to get 1000 likes and reach the top page..

I agreed with you, not everything needs to be news. And if someone wants to make a post asking who people are getting on the back of their shirt, then cool.

But 5 days later, when another user asks the exact same question...It'll get downvoted. Frequent users have seen it before. Despite the OP having a genuine interest, thinking he has an original question to ask.

If it's original, it usually gets good responses. Repetition gets downvoted, regardless of how new you are.

Well at the very least lets hope my thread has deterred some people from being trigger happy with the downvotes. I can see where you're coming from and I wouldn't like to do your job if that holds any value in my argument, aha.

Could we make a weekly stickied question thread for things like, "can I get tickets for the community shield?", "what will our sarting XI look like for the start of the season?" "what are we going to do with Mata/Blind/Valencia?", etc. Just a place where people can ask whatever questions they want and the community can engage with them?

That way people can ask questions and get community responses and it will last all week so people will be able to reference and see what others are saying if they maybe only check the sub a couple to few times a week?

It's already hard enough getting people to stick to 1 thread to discuss 1 topic. Having another thread for all the different types of question they may have just simply won't stop people from submitting their own posts and asking questions.

Plus, we're only allowed 2 stickies at a time. If it were unlimited, i'd love to have a 'general questions' thread at the top. But we cant. If we were to create one, it'd get buried.

We would see a lot less of that if people used search bar before posting. So many times things in question are tedious "What happens to Mata now?" threads and alike.

I agree though that as a community we should be more accepting and provide answers before trying to be funny for the upvotes.

The search bar is such a neglected tool

I don't think it's anything to do with the new members in particular. I think some people just don't want to have a discussion on academy players or formations or anything like that they just want latest news which is fine but you could always use the reddit live thread or follow united on twitter for that. If you don't want to participate in such threads just move on, the downvote button is not a I disagree button or a I'm not interested button its to be used when the post or comment doesn't add anything to the conversation or community. For example if someone want to talk about united players in the academy let them, no one is forcing you to participate in it but as its united related you shouldn't downvote it. Although saying that if the same or similar post has been made recently then I can see why it will be downvoted as it can get very repetitive here.

If you visit the sub often enough you'll see the same questions coming up over and over again. It's why there are some simple rules for the sub!

  1. Search before posting!
  2. Check the user guide!

People who don't do these first get called out. We should absolutely call people out for this.

In September 1993, AOL began bundling access to Usenet with new subscriptions. Prior to this, Usenet had been dominated by university students and academics, and policing new members was trivial. Every September, new members would sign up, contravene or flaunt netiquette, and be put right. A majority would drop off and never post again, and the minority who stayed would obey the rules which were established specifically because having no rules makes managing and participating in a forum very difficult indeed.

Then when AOL began bundling Usenet, Eternal September hit. The influx of new users never ended, and it became difficult to police.

This happens on Reddit when a subreddit is included in the defaults. We should make sure people continue to police this subreddit as they have been.

[–]Sir_Wayne_GiggsyThe Special One[S] 0

I admire your analysis but to compare initial academic usenet members who come from a skilled background to /r/reddevils holds no correlation;

People are going to post thing here no matter what, and with time as we expand as a community this will only grow exponentially.

The issue here isn't people following the rules. It is about community spirit and unnecessary down-voting.

[–]Majobu 0

I would never endorse attacking the person posting the post, but if the content in the post is bad, people should be allowed to downvote, and voice their opinions on why the post is bad.

When i started coming to this sub, we were below 10k subscribers, now, we're just short of 45k. With so many new subscribers, the amount of "shitposts" are increasing to the point where many of them are tremendously shit, and many themes in the post are recurring, answers you can find with a simple search here on reddit or google. When the quality of the posts that are allowed to survive goes down, so does the rest of the discussion/quality of the subreddit.

The mods do a great job of keeping the truly worst down, but sometimes you have to just call a post what it is, a shitpost/bad/already answered 10 times before.

Yep. I've been visiting this sub daily for years now and it used to not be like this. I'll probably get downvoted, but there is an aura of arrogance that has grown pretty high around here. I've never understood it either, if you don't like a post or it's not "high quality" enough, don't click on it.

Shitpost!!!

...I'msolonely...

[–]Sir_Wayne_GiggsyThe Special One[S] 2

Shitpost reply for the karma

a good testament to your point is by the time i clicked to read the 2 minutes ago thread it was already downvoted.

[–]Sir_Wayne_GiggsyThe Special One[S] 0

This thread is a paradox

There's some vote brigading going on in this subreddit atm.

I have to agree. Certain threads, and all the comments in it, drop in votes at the same time.

In the last few seconds my comments in this thread have gone to:

0, 0, -2

(Albeit I'm not always a great barometer, but I think I'm being constructive.)

I was at -5 within a minute. I know I'm unpopular but I didn't think I triggered people like you do.

It's quite freeing in a way.

I agree. I want more people to post United related to an extent. I want to see more activities but the general mentality of the sub of: everything petty/not significant = shit post. this deters people from posting and even I feel I'd get called out for posting somewhat shit posty.

All I want is more activity of people, especially the ones who are afraid to comment or post. Seriously, I want more family kit photos like the one someone posted few days ago with his daughter's name and age in the back of the kit and more discussions and more creative and friendly material. I come to this sub every day and love this place. sometimes it's just so damn barren whenever I come here only to see nothing.

So please be active people! Don't be afraid!
