Silly season has returned for the 4th summer on /r/reddevils!

Most of you know the drill.

For those who don't...From today until the window closes, a transfer round-up & discussion thread will be made every day. In these threads, ANYTHING can be talked about. Any player, in or out, any transfer fee, anything!

Now, with these threads starting, this means that rumours submitted as separate posts will be removed unless they are from reliable sources!

D1794 gone awol, already 11 hours into the day and no transfer thread. Unlikely anything spectatular will happen transfer wise.

About 11 hours later than normal!

Nothing new happening so far I guess. Expecting some Pogba updates probably tomorrow at the earliest. Hopefully things get sorted quickly and we get him or the alternative soon.

It's nice to have everything almost sorted out quickly for sure and just check r/soccer instead for other teams' progress in the market instead. Arsenal fans are already losing their shit this early in the window but I guess they've got a reason to given their lack of additions since last summer.

In terms of transfers, say we get Pogba, I still feel we need another CM in time as Carrick is on his last miles at the top, Bastian isn't the same type of player in a way but also not reliably fit lately, Blind still has a way to go before being a deep lying playmaker at the top level and the others aren't those types of players either.

Pogba would solve one issue but the Carrick replacement issue is still something we need to work on and I suspect Mourinho feels he can get by this season while pursuing someone next year instead and seeing how Blind or so cope too in the meantime.

You're right. It's mental that we need to sign two central midfielders when we already have Fellaini, Carrick, Schweinsteiger, Schneiderlin, Herrera as specialists in the position, but we do. Sigh.

That's really because they aren't good enough in a way or so. Herrera could be good enough if he kicks on and fits Jose's style. But Jose always uses a creative CM like alonso, fabregas or so and we need a new one good enough because Carrick isn't 30 anymore unfortunately. And the others don't really fit that role more than just as a temporary fix for now.

Bit upset about the Varela rumours, I really liked the kid. He was a little bit rash sometimes but I liked his spirit and overlaps down the wing.

He's 23 or so and not nearly good enough to be a starting fullback yet for us or other good clubs even.

His attacking is decent but defending is what a fullback needs to do first too and, he lacks a fair bit on that front. The best thing is to play more for him and there's no way he gets slotted in for us so a sale is best for both him and us overall really. We could put a buyback clause in case... Maybe he'll find his level and then with good coaching, develop from there by playing a lot and then come back next time.

I think you're right. if he wants to be first choice and that's the reason for him going, I understand but I think he makes a good backup, and you're right, with good coaching, could be a lot stronger in the defensive aspect of his game, and I would have liked to see him get more first team minutes.

He's not even a good backup though. There's Valencia there for one thing who, despite not being a defender at all, has better defensive awareness overall than he does. He's a second backup which, basically means he won't play. Mourinho barely rotates if he can so he's unlikely to get any minutes at all really.

Yeah he's not a bad player but he's not a good enough player to keep either and it's best for him to be sold and likely develop a bit more (or much more even). Even if he stays the same, at least he gets to play regularly at some team that his level matches.

He might be good, but IMO he's failed to prove so. He's had a few good games, but along with that made mistakes. Add to that his age, if he was 18 or 19, i'd say keep him but he's not. I don't think he'll ever be United material. So it's better to sell him and use the brilliant youth we've got instead. Moreover we have Darmian and Tony as replacement, so i don't think he would get time on the pitch either way.

Yeah I agree. I think it's a shame; he was highly rated at Castilla and they know their onions! I really don't think that Valencia is a suitable cover, but I like the idea of TFM as second choice full back.

I'd rather see TFM play in a defensive central role instead of on the RB.

I don't think he's going to get a shot in a central role this season. Assuming we sign Pogba/a central midfielder he'll be way down the pecking order.
