[Discussion] Martial vs Memphis (self.reddevils)

There's been a lot of talk about squad rotation / where Memphis fits in with Martial being the clear number 1 at LW. Have heard a lot of people saying to rotate Memphis in when his style better suits the opponent, but wanted to get some opinions of when exactly that would be?

What situations / qualities of Memphis do you see as being an upgrade to Martial? When would you like to see him starting over Martial?

Memphis is a threat outside of the box and the better crosser. Martial is better inside the box.

You can trust martial to work his way into the box from anywhere too. He picks up deep and will run into the box. Memphis seems to just want to cut in and shoot.

Memphis is a beast when he has a lot of space around him which is not afforded to him in PL. In Europe he tends to shine because of that (PSV and Midgetland game).

But given that space, is he better than Martial with the same amount of space?

No he isn't in my opinion. There were loads of times last season where Memphis had a break on and loads of space and 9 times out of 10 he did the wrong thing. Martial has a better end product at the moment and is capable of playing well without being offered space too

Yes, but Mourinho known for his counterattacking style bases on the fact that there will be a ton of space for him.

Memphis was out of shape for most of last season. I think he'll come good this season and on the right wing opposite martial. I don't really know where Rooney is going to fit in the team, certainly I hope not at the exclusion of Rashford. Jose will run five in the middle, so let's call Schneiderlin, Mkhitargaryen and... Blind in center, that leaves Zlatan, Rooney, or Rashford up top.

Honestly I hope we sell Rooney. I hope Memphis comes good as well, and I hope Jose is able to keep Martial playing and focused.

I'm curious, has anyone considered moving Martial to the right? It seems he could still pick up the ball and drive into the box, and then memphis could be accommodated

Personally would not like to see this. He's looked much less lethal on the right side than on the left / through the middle

Memphis would do better in a more direct (vertical if you prefer) team. The problem the he, and most of our attack, faced was that we tended to want pass our way up the field slowly and by the time we got to the box, we had two banks of 4 sitting pretty. Memphis, as has been said, isn't really a hit the byline winger, so he cut inside into trouble and we got countered on.

In this regard, martial is better as he could cut in, or head towards the byline and try at dribble along the byline. However, none of them are really good at delivering lw crosses into the box. Young is better served at that, or whoever the leftback is.

Jose will revitalize Memphis since, as he has said, his style of player is more direct. Memphis, provided we can get his confidence back up over this preseason, will have more space and the possibility of facing opponents when he is running at speed rather than attempting to accelerate past them (Martial also has better acceleration). I believe he will have a bigger impact.

I do think come October, we'll have some fierce competition for those three positions upfront.

I have a feeling Memphis will be more a Mourinho Player.

But Martial will be amazing as well do to his ability to score goals.
