I was thinking of the psychoanalysis meaning, and I don't see how it is incorrect here. Just to go off one definition:

"the one of the three divisions of the psyche in psychoanalytic theory that serves as the organized conscious mediator between the person and reality especially by functioning both in the perception of and adaptation to reality."

So the section of yourself that wants to, and should be, an organized mediator in an attempt to find truth from your surroundings and experiences still has a tendency to filter for answers that make you feel superior/better than others. Then you act on it, by being a dick about it, because you think that is reality. Even if you're in a minority group, where you may think there would be less of it.

It's just another way of saying everyone wants to think their shit doesn't stink, and it is hard to overcome that.
