I hope everyone who comes to this video realizes that this is, by no stretch of the imagination, the MOST important piece of animation under ten minutes long made in the last 40 years. All of the animation techniques and even individual sequences that Gainax became famous for (including the Instrumentality from space scene) are present right here, mature, in this video.

I just watched this and I gotta say, this is indeed really amazing! I came here actually because i saw this used a Electric Light Orchestra song, but WOW! This is very well animated, I can't even believe some of this was made completely by hand, especially the scene where you see the buildings breaking. It looks like it was precalculated on a computer. Very, very impressive.

What is utterly mind-bending is that not only was this 100% fan made, it was done in Super 8mm and used no computers! The attention to detail, such as the way her breasts bounce when she flexes her arms (1:55) or the way the tree branches bend slightly when they sprout (3:40), to say nothing of the explosion (3:04), puts some of today's animation to shame.

weeeelll, not so much. before the internet more people actually payed good money for anime, not so much today. what this meant was that studios had the budget to produce high quality animation, i will have to say 80's stuff seems to have better quality to most 90's works, i still love 90's stuff, I think that decade was the peak for cell animation.

Uh, it IS the 80s. This short was the opening video for Daicon 4, a convention in Japan in 1983. It's not part of a series, or anything. There IS another short similar to this one, form the previous convention, though.
    1
    Goatmon
Sadly, the studio who made this, and the company that now owns this video, never did get the rights to use the playboy bunny image. So they never had an official DVD release of this. There was only ever a laser disc release, in the 80s, and only in Japan.

@ThePirateMD no this was all hand drawn
    1
    ProductionsHead
@ThePirateMD To be honest, I really wish this was a series, and this was the opening, but no. It has to be a video for a sci-fi convention *AND THIS ONE HAS COMIC BOOK CHARACTERS AND STAR WARS >:O* and no, Even though The creators of this grew up to be Gainax, they still will never have a series like the amazement of the 4 minutes and 23 seconds i've seen today.
    1
    Ian Storm
@ThePirateMD I don't actually fault the programs more like the companies that push out trivial franchises based on a decent hit or two. Just stick a popular name on it and push out whatever as fast as you can given the aid of the new technology. I have seen computer's actually "aid" as they were meant to , but they have become far and few between. Put the blame where it belongs on those who push out trivial bs for the sake of money. Not for the sake of art and a good story.

    Sana Bing Bang
@sacrisesma I don't believe you understand the value of hand drawn animation. Computer animation fails in comparision with hand drawn animators. Computers can never copy the same emotions as a human. It completely overfathoms my mind how animators can make every motion so organic like there is life in them. When I see computer animated anime I just want to throw up, everything about the story, char, scenes, screen play execution, acting is just so horribly done. Fucking fanservice everywhere.

Animation quality was mostly shit in the 80s. I don't know why people are talking about this short, technical showcase, like it was the norm back then. If what you like is the blurry VHS look, you can run the new anime through a filter, o transcode it to 50 MB low res realmedia video.
    1
    screwtheotherktell
To everything there is a season and a time for every purpose under heaven. Things change dude, deal with it, enjoy the memories, and realize you're making new ones.
    1
    Farrel Clement
When I was a child, this was exactly the kind of media I was exposed to, that I fell in love with. Fun Sci-Fi, with gratuitous giant robots and monsters, space planes and fighters, random bunny girls and great animation and acting. I grew up on Star Wars, Star Trek, Gundam, Outlaw Star, and everything you can think of with the same feel. My childhood, though a decade later, was filled with this video. I can't imagine where everyone that work on this has gone. Where is my Sci-Fi? Where?

@TotemoOishii whoa, whoa, whoa.. hey now. rebuild of eva does not look phenomenal. it looks completely mediocre. It has terrible 3d cg/animation, and not so great hand drawn animation. if you look at the original series, there are many instances where the original has better animation than the new movie.
    1
    TotemoOishii
@ThePirateMD For example: look at the growing trend of re-making or creating new animes in an OVA format. The animation quality is extremely high, and the production company sinking that kind of money into the anime generally takes the time to produce a good story and procure good voice actors as well. Look at Hellsing Ultimate, Unicorn Gundam, or Rebuild of Evangelion. They all rely heavily on computer-aided animation, and they look phenomenal.
    1
    TotemoOishii
@ThePirateMD I would say it has less to do with the computer-aided animation techniques and more to do with the over-saturation of dribbling, mindless options available in the anime world today, coupled with an ever-increasing demand for visual quality and cleanliness. Now the last guy to graduate from animation school can get a job drawing "Magical Schoolgirl for Middle-Aged Hikokomori #3687", and because there is a demand for this for some reason, it will be cleaned up in a computer and sold.
    1
    TotemoOishii
    @arsoys Or unless you're a sci-fi/ anime/ history nerd. *cough*

    buster beam
@fattytheking but modern 2D animation that uses computers is also "hand-drawn" - they tend to draw out the keyframes on paper and then draw over them with a tablet. it's not like computers drew the cells in Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt or Tatami Galaxy.
    1
    buster beam
@fattytheking the only bad thing that computer use led to is cheap looking out-of-place 3D CG. there's nothing particularly wrong with modern anime; if you actually paid attention to (good) new shows/movies instead of assuming that everything made in recent years must suck you'd find tons of stuff to enjoy, but I guess being optimistic and positive on the internet is bad most shows from the 80s were... not half as good looking as this.

@ThePirateMD No, it was the recession Japan's economy suffered when the bubble burst combined with the rise of Internet piracy driving down DVD sales that forced animation studios to cut their budgets. Besides, old anime suffered from QUALITY just as much as the new ones do. Does anyone here remember the WIDE Gundam?

The animation tends to vary here. A lot of it's decent, and entertaining, but it goes to End of Evangelion levels (and items) around the end.

It's a amateur animated music video made for the opening of a sci-fi convention in 1983. The attendees were duly impressed; the animators got enough attention to get funding to open their own animation studio the next year. They released a major feature-length film in '87, then a hit six-episode giant robot OVA series, then a TV series on NHK. They even dabbled in computer games. Oh, and some weird series from '95-'96 that nobody cares about.

I've been a big fan of Gainax for years. They are by far my favorite animation studio. - I had heard of this a few times but didn't look it up until earlier this week. - I've watched it at least twice everyday since i saw it. hahaha. - Its epic, and just reassures me that Gainax is, always has been, and always will be damn amazing...

Didn't it start with Gundam? And wasn't Macross the first series made "by anime nuts, for anime nuts?" (And I'm pretty sure it was the source of the modern meaning of "otaku.") Granted, Gainax has always been "the otaku studio," *gestures to video above* even before they were "Gainax."

Still gives me chills to see this piece of classic animation. Unbelievable that fans were able to create such an amazing piece of art all by hand back in the day. We used to show this once a year at our anime club back in the day, and always had a ball trying to identify *all* the cameos (from novels, comics, movies, anime and sentai). And yes, this is considered one of the great moments in otaku culture- hence why it was homaged in Densha Otoko. Thank you for posting, Pteri.

I will as soon as people stop ignorantly ranting how the show was "bad". If you want we can go into specifics.Ofcourse people are entitled to their opinions no matter how narrow minded, and of course other people such as myself are also entitled to respond.

I agree with iloveedibelstuff, most evafans are stuck up
    1
    buubuu
That's funny, most Eva fans I've run to tend to go on about it's "deep and complex storyline" in a condescending matter more than anything. Like I said, give it a break. We get that you were blessed with an above-average IQ and therefore have the privilege of being one of the only few to fully understand and enjoy Evangelion. We are not worthy, etc.
    1
    metalraider187
yes most fans go on about eva's superficial qualities. I stick to more intelectualy orientated conversations, not just about the action.

Give it a break. We know that Eva is supposed to be "deep" and thought-provoking. It's not Eva that I dislike, I like it for what it's worth, it's the Evangelion fans I can't stand; Eva fans don't shut up about the damn anime.

Just in case you wanna know, this song is called Twilight, from Electric Light Orchestra's album Time. The opening for densha otoko was a nod or reference to this video (Daicon was sort of a SF convention and this video was its promo or opening I think)
    1
    vegeta1234

I dunno, I think it works best as a short. It's just a neat little tribute to sci-fi, and I think it works best as just that. Besides, they'd probably have a hard time keeping the animation quality so high as a series.

All the cameos crack me up. I haven't seen anything so funny since "Bring Me the Head of Charlie Brown" by Jim Reardon. Too bad the video quality is so blurry -- I can't see many of the characters, even in freeze-frame. Great music choice too. "Twilight" by ELO. It's got an exhilarating, inspiring rhythm that matches the action beautifully.
    1
    metalraider187
you must not be that scientific, there are various seemingly meaningless tidbits in eva that have much more meaning than you can imagine. lilith.I dont mean the religious imagry either.
    1
    kagato3
I love all the cameos in this thing. Just about everything is from a film/anime/book even the sword she is surfing on. And the Super SDF1 with the Yamato and Harlocks ship as its arms is just such a great idea
    1
    metalraider187
I suppose Eva at the time it was first made was trying to break a stagnation that had insued on anime, at least that was the directors intention. to some degree he suceeded, while not perfect eva is something else.
    1
    metalraider187
At least End of Evangelion was influenced by "The Idion:Be Invoked", not to say that either is better. without End of Evangelion i would have never found out about that type of anime, while the shows were there I always questioned wether they were any good, and if they are any better than EoE then they are amazing.

As a scientifically minded thinker and radical feminist, neither was of interest. I actually do love the new Gundam series though, Seiji Mizujima is making something excellent out of it. I loved FLCL, Kare Kano and the first eps of Diebuster and Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, so I disagree about the superiority of older Gainax, I also love the Daicon films and Gunbuster and want to see Otaku no Video and Wings of Honneamise.

I quote "Neon Genesis Evangelion is considered to be one of the three most influential mecha anime series of all time" the other two are Space Battleship Yamoto and Moble Suit Gundam.
    1
    metalraider187
I meant for its time you ass, anyways I never said Eva was completely original, as is gundam. while eva by no means was the first it ceirtainly revived the genre.
    1
    metalraider187
Even so nobody seemed interested at the time, for what gundam has been it dosent seem to have kept up that image it had many years ago. right psychobable..... like in third impact? at least EoE had that and more while not in space it was still impressive by any means.
    1
    crackaasscracka
wtf are you retarded no one said gundam wing it barely even counts as gundam and the original shows by tomino are very psychological, watch them please before you make stupid statements im pretty sure people's souls floating in space talking to each other beats bullshit psychobabble
    1
    metalraider187
all wound up into one series? I think not, Gundam had to do that in several seasons. not to mention its more action oriented, Eva does pay homage to gundam but even now people will tell you Eva is more psychologicaly themed. and at the time gundam wing wasant to angst riden like eva was.
    1
    crackaasscracka
please, eva wasn't doing anything gundam hadn't already done 20 years before it
    1
    metalraider187
well it was confusing at first but I wouldent call it a mess. if you think about it its all realy simple. there was an article somewhere that had annos exact interpretation of each episode, and untill every retard who thinks they can put eva down reads it they shall remain that way.
    1
    metalraider187
pinche pendejo numero 3, thats right you jackass you wouldent know the first thing about Eva even if you watched it for one million years, you grand ignorance seems to blind you from that. tell me of a series in the mid 90's that even came close to what NGE did.
    1
    metalraider187
babble with a point, various points. its hard to balance a mecha series while still being psychologicly relevant. anno did it on purpose, there were various aspects in the show that poked fun at otakus despite the "fanservice" ironicly enough dies down at the second half, the half that I enjoyed the most.
    1
    metalraider187
lol for its time it was very groudbreaking, name other animes at that time that deals with psychology and metaphysics.

I wouldn't say FLCL was really "dark," so much as it had a certain depth in many parts that went beyond its superficially wacky surface.
    1
    metalraider187
well in real life puberty isint all rainbows in lolly pops.
    1
    Iguanaray
How is puberty 'dark'? That's all there is to FLCL
    1
    metalraider187
and besides the series might have just been an anime but End of Evangelion was problaly one of the most amazing things ive ever seen. and FLCL may seem like a "madcap joyride" on the outside but its pretty dark in some cases.
    1
    metalraider187
in the end its rather simple realy anno trys to convey to the audience that its bad to linger in the past, and its best to have a positive out look on life overall. and no ive taken developmental psychology and gone over most of what is found in Evangelion, I know what the oedipus complex is, sigmind freud and daughter, the id ego and superego. its all pretty basic.
    1
    Setebos
There used to be a follow-up video to this(with "Hold On Tight To Your Dream" as background music) which featured some of the pencilling/cel work. And you're right.
    1
    surft
great production values for a 1983 animation. What's amazing is that they must have hand-drawn everything- and every part of it was really busy (detailed)

ive heard, and gainax already had one its called FLCL. I enjoyed it.

do you know of the origins of the absolute terror field? in theory a child who dosent grow up with strong parental figures would develop a mental barrier "the absolute terror field" to keep others at an emotional distance, i think im afflicted with that.... anyways William Reich came up with this theory, he was a student of Sigmund Freud.
    1
    metalraider187
I bet you didint know that untill i mentioned it, I also bet you didint know how Rei, shinji and asuka represent the Id, Ego and Superego system? and why not I ask? because again evangelion HAS DEEPTH, anyways its realy simple il leave you to think about it.
    1
    Iguanaray
Yeah, so Shinji wants to fuck a clone of his mother. DEEP.
    1
    metalraider187
you to are blind...... its fine the deeper qualities of evangelion are rather ellusive to the average person, what do you know about the lilith? or shinjis Oedipus complex with Rei?, and how easy it is to relapse into depression?. Tell me what you realy know about FLCL.
    1
    gatosombra
uau........this refresh my memories, incredible, but this video was a first work of GAINAX, when they are only a group of fans, make a video for fans....

Why would anyone spend their time watching AMVs when there are undiscovered gems like this on youtube? It's funny, the more I watch this the more I like it, it kinda reminds me of dreams I had as a kid, where all the characters from different cartoons and movies were in one show...

Daicon IV anime... I look back on it with nostalgia, after such a long time.
    1
    metalraider187
Remember this though, people tend to curse what they do not understand.
    1
    metalraider187
Like the series finaly shinji had to face his problems instead of running from them he comes up with a positive out-look on life, that ones life is influenced only by how one percieves it, in a way it is like how EoE is in that shinji does not run away from his problems but faces them, if he had not changed then he simply would have allowed humanity to be assimilated into a singularity, SELEE's destiny for man kind.
    1
    metalraider187
i meant it in terms of animation, the variation among the character desings, as in how I interpret it well I dont think you understand eva at all, im not calling you dumb but take a look at the end of evangelion, first off if you truly understood it you would know that not everybody died, they are simply in the sea of LcL and can come back if the so choose, shinji had the option of eliminating humanity or saving it.
    1
    Iguanaray
Also, how can you compare Eva and DBZ? Eva is really pretentious and tries to be deep and serious while supposedly being aimed at an adult audience while DBZ is just a children's cartoon meant to entertain people.
    1
    Iguanaray
I just failed to see that message, mostly because the characters had no determination at all. They were all weak and overly emotional and felt like they were being forced into whatever they were doing. The whole thing ended with everyone but Shinji and Asuka *dying*, and Shinji trying to strangle Asuka (after having fapped over her) for no readily apparent reason; how is that a message about 'carrying on despite all your hardships'?
    1
    metalraider187
imo evas message was, to carry on despite all your hardships among many other things. Eva is too much for some people and that is why they curse it, and dont talk about the animation it kicked ass, for being low budget anyways. at least its more diverse than dbz.
    1
    Iguanaray
I respect the effort that went into EVA, but it's just a bit too serious and emo for me. I'd rather go for something with some humour thrown in, like One Piece, FLCL and Mind Game (probably my favourite anime of all time).
    1
    Iguanaray
Yeah, and I don't mind it; even the creators said the cross-shaped explosions were added in so the Japanese public would find it foreign and interesting, and that there's no real meaning behind it. But US anime fans keep trying to point out how deep, touching and intelligent everything really is, which is far from true.
    1
    metaleggman18
I wonder how you'll like the new EVA movies coming out, considering the presentation could be a lot different. Always interesting to hear people's opinions on stuff so popular like this. :D
    1
    gartlonm
the show was based somewhat on christian reliogion for the coolfactor
    1
    Iguanaray
the robot/angel/whatever fights were pretty fun to watch, but I didn't really like the character designs. Pretty much everyone besides Gendo looked like the same guy with different hair (or added boobs on female characters). As for its themes, they tried too hard to make it seem serious and deep. Cross shaped explosions, wtf? FLCL was brilliant, though.
    1
    metaleggman18
well, animation wise, NGE was amazing. It's content may not be everyone's favorite, but you have to give it that. Love this video though. ELO+Anno=masterpiece :D IMO, this is way up there with Fantasia 2000 in quality, saw that in IMAX. Cartoons are great.
    1

For anyone who: Watched 3-4 gen flickering VHS ( or even Beta ) copies of anime hand transferred from contacts in Japan in old dusty comic shops.... For anyone who remembers when Anime was rare, when you could be HUNGRY for it. When model kits were scarce, toys even more so. When scoring a copy of Hobby Japan was a serious undertaking. For all of us who were Anime before Anime was cool - thats a little slice of love deivered from our youth...

What's dumb about it? It's an awesome video, it has passion, heart, creativity, it's original and much more. When I watch this video I think that whoever made this, did so because it was worthwhile to them, and that shows in the video.

And there's something very appealing about amateur work and then progressing. And the incentive would be to work on ideas, stories, and characters that each person actually wants to tell but everyone working together to achieve this. I think it's a sound idea.
    1
    Khultan
....I think it is possible. Those Gainax guys didn't seek out anyone's advice they just went and did it, y'know? Think about it, it's possible if like-minded people form a coalition to support each other's original ideas into one main idea.
    1

ProductionX, if you go to this website called Superherohype my tag is Hahahaha you'll see two simple drawings I submitted. I wrote a 40 page sci-fi script that I'm still writing and I'm currently trying to finish animation work for a b-boy group. It's real hectic....

Sooooo....this is the Gainax promotional video. I finally see this. And this is when they were, essentially, super super animation fans (non-professionals) that is GREAT! People complain about the way stories are told in animation, people should form together in a joint project *and I mean NON-PROFESSIONALS BUT INDIVIDUALS WHO DESIRE TO GET IN AND CREATE A SCENE and mutually work together. Forget Hollywood. Individuals working together to generate independent films.
