Government having power isn't always a bad thing. That's what we call regulation. Without regulation, there would still have child labor.

I agree. Things like child labor and the horrible treatment of food and drugs were terrible and needed the power of the government to assure the safety of its people.

So your premise that government having power is bad is a false premise. Secondly, the slippery slope argument is just as dumb. Most people just want universal background checks. I would personally argue for universal background checks,

Expanding the background check requirement makes no sense as a response to mass shootings (even though that is how it has been presented), because the perpetrators of these crimes, including todays massacre in Orlando, typically either have actually passed background checks or could do so because they do not have disqualifying criminal or psychiatric records.

I believe in right to own firearms. You wanna own a handgun because you like to shoot at the range or have it for home self-defense? Go right ahead. You own a shotgun or a rifle because you like to hunt? Go ahead. But there is no practical purpose for owning an AR-15, or an AK-47, or any other assault weapon. We have a right to self-defense, not a right to assault.

Assault weapons are already impossible for the average citizen to get. Guns are for more than hunting and target practice. They are for lawful self-defense and, to borrow wording from the Constitution, for the security of a free state. This often requires more than 5 or 7 or 10 or 15 rounds. Accuracy is low in life threatening situations. While it may only take a few shots to stop a threat it might take a large number to hit the threat a few times. Depending on what year and what city’s report, police officers generally only enjoy 17 to 40% accuracy on the streets with their handguns. Considering that most of us don’t have the same level of training or experience (or reliable statistical data) as today’s law enforcement we might fare even worse. Limiting the number of shots you can fire dramatically decreases your odds of hitting the target when your accuracy drops due to the pressure.Criminals don’t always act alone. It is often necessary to have enough ammunition to hold off multiple assailants. How about the 2015 San Bernadino shootings. Multiple assailants with multiple firearms. How about the Trolley Square SLC shooter in 2007? One officer with his one gun wasn’t enough to stop the carnage.

if I’ve got four or five armed thugs attempting to rob my house or rape my hypothetical daughter, I want to have the most ammunition possible and the best hand to neutralize the threat and protect the most important aspects of my life. An AR-15 would provide the defense I need. Yes, need. Citizens in the United States cannot own an assault rifle. Which is defined as a weapon that can fire burst and automatically. Any civilian AR-15 or AK-47 cannot do either of these things. Pistols are more deadly than them. They can hold hundreds of rounds with a drum magazine. And they can fire just as quickly as an AR-15. Not to mention how concealable they are. You'd be hard pressed to sneak a long gun into anywhere, a pistol you can strap on your ankle or under your bra if you're a woman.
