Everyday I see celebrities die and I don't care. I've never cared, I never will. But what surprises me is that I didn't know how big of a deal this guy was. I've never heard any of his songs before, I really haven't. And yet, he's a pretty big deal apparently.

      How old are you?

Basically he was a musician's musician. So you're favorite musicians favorite.

Uptown Funk sounds the way it does because of Prince. Uptown where?! Minneapolis that's where.

When I was a kid Nsync and Marylin Manson were popular. I told the kids at my school "oh you like them? Those guys are huge Prince fans (even though Nsync and Manson were 2 different genres)" I decided I was grown an cut the middle man.

He is self taught in 27 instruments. House wired to record all over the place because music making for him wasn't just a talent or a job. It was a compulsion and he didn't want to miss a lyric or tune.

Eric Clanton considers him the best guitarist. But his vocal range, wordsmithing and piano are amazing too.

I am just the biggest fan. I'm only 30 but I just miss him already and was going to go to more shows.

Hopefully his vault is released, more like a trickle than a data dump though.

I was pooped out in the latter half of the 1990s.

I feel the same. I understood the outpouring of grief when Michael Jackson died, but this has caught me off guard. I feel like I missed out on some great phenomenon the world never talked about.

The world never talked about him because of his fight with the WB. They kept him from owning his own intellectual property. Words. Beats. Tunes. All of it. He got his freedom but it cost him his name for a while.

American musicians benefitted from his fight but many are ignorant.

But is influence lives on through some of the pop artists today. He was insanely talented and was every bit as famous as he deserved in the 80s but the industries embargo against him hurt his fame later on. However when he came to own his own work the fame didn't matter ad he had enough knowledgeable loyal fans to keep him paid. Many of those fans ate musicians or wanna be musicians who lived vicariously through him.

You really didn't. People react like this everytime anyone famous dies. Everyone overreacts like they were the best of all time or how inspiring they were to so many people or whatever other bullshit people pull up. And it happens to every famous person, every time. People forget about them, then they die, and everyone for a week or two acts like their heartbroken, and then after that week or two they go back to forgetting them.

Prince was a genius. I mean the man could pick up any instrument and immediately know how to play it. He wrote so many songs that were the sound of the 80's and early 90's. The man was a legend. He's not just any celebrity. There's a reason Prince, in particular, is a big deal.

Yeah, but some people (myself included) don't care about music.

Yeah, but most people do. And that's why we make a big deal out of it.

Okay maybe Prince is a little different, but you honestly can't say that I'm wrong with 99% of celebrity deaths.

Possibly. I tend to not pay attention. Some of them hit me hard. Bowie was a complete shock. Prince was like a sucker punch. Robin Williams was terrible and Alan Rickman was a blow. Basically, it's hard when it's someone you've admired for a long time.

They were equally big, Bowie's just been around longer. Prince was a beast to be reckoned with all through the 80s as was Bowie in the 70s.

It's not just songs. There is, at least, the documentary Kevin Smith made and, if he's right, a load of music videos. Not as in a bloke with with a camcorder, actual full blown music videos

In addition to everything else he did, Bowie made his death a musical event. It's gonna be pretty hard for anyone to beat that.

Bowie was in a totally different league, and Prince most assuredly would have agreed

          Highly debatable

Absolutely debatable who was more talented, more influential, more important, almost to the point of being pointless. I don't mean to imply Prince is a lesser artist. It's just that Bowie was around longer, sold more albums, had more fans, etc etc. I did not in any way intend to denigrate Prince's legacy, his talent, his music, his influence, or his fans. I have massive respect and admiration for him. But Bowie was literally a bigger star. That's all I was saying. Both are legendary artists who will never be repeated. Bowie was just bigger. And that's not a slight to Prince, it's just the truth.

That's just like, your opinion man

Prince was more talented I'd say

Can we just not argue about who was "better" after they both died? Let's be sad for the loss of both of them.

As someone who grew up listening to both (as well as as other artists) I agree with this. It's not a pissing contest.

It is entirely down to taste as to whose music was better but very few megastars have written, produced and played on all their records from the absolute beginning. He had no one to "shape his sound" - no hotshot producer or whatever.

He picked great musicians to back him but he was capable of playing all the instruments himself perfectly well and he was probably the most underrated guitarist of all time. As a lead guitarist he was stratospherically good.

He wrote so much music that even though he wrote some distinctly average songs, he also wrote a ton of really amazing songs.

          You're describing Prince, right?

          [–]Timothy_Claypole 8ポイント9ポイント  (6子コメント)

Yeah. Bowie is well known to have worked with some great producers such as Tony Visconti, Brian Eno and so on. Prince has worked with...Prince.

I don't get why People can't admit that Prince was more talanted than Bowie

          [–]Timothy_Claypole 3ポイント4ポイント  (3子コメント)

I don't think it is fair or right to say one is better than the other because a lot is down to musical taste I think.

Yeah, it's like the Stones vs the Beatles. But, I wouldn't compare Prince and Bowie - I'd compare Prince and MJ, simply because of decades and when they were popular.

          [–]Timothy_Claypole 4ポイント5ポイント  (1子コメント)

          A more reasonable comparison, certainly.

Well MJ was a top drawer live performer, who in his heyday was just peerless with his shows. He co-wrote some of the most famous songs ever. Amazing vocalist and dancer.

And yes I still feel Prince was more talented. MJ had Quincy Jones and a team of great writing and performing talent to make his best sellers. His records were carefully crafted whereas Prince was this one-man music machine just churning out song after song.

True story: Prince was originally mooted to be on the track "Bad". It would be a duet/duel where Prince "comes to kick MJ's ass" and MJ responds. The lyrics kind of bear this out. But Prince turned up and said to them the record would be a success without him, which of course it was. Source: Quincy Jones interview

prince is/was massively influential but outside music hes just "that kinda weird guy". bowie was mainstream but also cult, he was in all aspects of art and culture.

i honestly dont think you can name many names bigger than bowie, and the only reason he wasnt/isnt talked about more is because he wasnt a complete weirdo in the end even though the characters he portrayed often were.

It's a trip. One of his singers/ costars/ exgirlfriends, Vanity died earlier this year. Prince dated some of the hottest women on this planet.

Damn you 2016. What a fucking awful year. I can't even decide if I'm happy or sad that we're getting a new president.

Haven't really stopped crying yet. I was crying when my sister told me that Chyna was found dead and then hours later she tells me that Prince is gone. Bloody hell 2016 you've been a real bitch. Allen Rickman, David Bowie, Doris Roberts, Chyna and Prince. Fuck you!!

Yeah, if I have to hear the middle part of A Day in the Life on every radio station for an entire week I might be 2016's next victim.
