tbh whining about people using gay as an insult is gay as fuck

It would be pretty nice if people stopped it, though. Especially considering what just happened in America with the shootings. Still, I'm not going to get my jimmies rustled from some silly internet comments.

Edit: oh boi reddit sure does love defending using gay as an insult for some reason

It's reasonable to be a bit more respectful, but it isn't off limits forever.

It would be pretty cool if it was. Like if everybody could just agree it's douchy thing to do.

Edit: sorry to offend...question mark?

Except it isn't...?

I'm faggy as hell, but nothing annoys me more than people acting like they need to end all gay jokes forever for the sake of LGBT people's feelings. I get if an individual person is uncomfortable with them and personally requests that those jokes not be used around them, but telling me that I can't tell a gay joke because it will hurt my feelings is pretty gay.

Gay joke != "Gay" as an insult

I agree with the title of this thread. Fucking 12 year olds everywhere.

bi dude here, I've called just about everything gay

[–]Not_A_Crazed_Gunman 8ポイント9ポイント  (4子コメント)

Gay dude here, I call my friends faggots because I can

Your username makes me suspicious...

True, especially since the way to take the weight out of a derogatory term is to not give a shit if you're a member of the group it's aimed at. When it has no weight it has no meaning, then that means if you try to use it against a group of people you look like a fucking retard.

Same shit with the word cracker. No one person gives a fuck or finds it offensive, so you look like a dumbshit for trying to use it to actually insult a white person. It has no weight, so it doesn't mean shit. There's weakness for the word.

Gay jokes are fine. Using gay as an insult is just stupid, at least insulting people about things that don't even have anything to do with sexuality. Not offensive, just kinda annoying.

I'm not saying lgbt people are uncomfortable with it or trying to say or insult them by saying they cant handle it, or that we should coddle everyone's feelings. I'm bi and me and my friend call eachother gay and fag all the time. I just wish that it wasn't a normal thing to do is all. It doesnt offend me deeply or anything, I just kinda wish gay wasn't a word worthy of insult. It's hard to explain, I kind of have mixed feelings about it. Like I sorta care, but not enough to make big arguments with people who use the word ironically.

Saying it's bad to be gay unironically, obviously, is a completely different story, though. Like people on reddit, who call others faggot and are serious. A few subreddits come to mind, but I don't want to start any sort of drama.

It's a normal thing to do, and there's nothing anyone can do to stop it. Just move on, yo.

Just like saying "nigger" unironically a hundred years ago was a normal thing to do. Now? Not so much. It happens, but not even close to what it once was. Things change dude

That's not the right attitude. Change can and does happen all the time. All it takes is a movement. If I can convince someone to stop, I will have done better in my book. It's really not that hard to just not use gay as a serious insult.

[–]Diarrhea_Van_Frank 2ポイント3ポイント  (15子コメント)

But nobody that it affects cares. Gay people mostly don't care for sure. The only people who get butthurt about it are straight people who feel the need to defend gays because they don't think they're capable of doing it themselves.

Well that's simply not true, since I'm bi and I find it kind of stupid.

try and go ask /r/lgbt or /r/ainbow how they feel about people using "faggot" as an insult. It's okay I'll wait.

I'm a lesbian and I don't like it either.

Ok.

I wish cunt wasn't thrown around like it is. But anyone who proclaims the word as being off limits Is. A. Fucking. Cunt.

Do you use the words stupid or idiot? You are insulting people IQ's less than 70. The word moron was associated with eugenics. So when I use moron, am I advocating for people to eliminate the reproduction rights of people they feel are inferior? Think about any word currently used as an insult, they all had incredibly serious, or dark, origins.

Eliminating fag, or gay, is not going to lessen homophobia. If people stop using cunt, whore or bitch it won't get women any more respect. Stopping the word retard isn't going to prevent downs, autistic or other less functional babies from being aborted. Nigga, nigger, or whatever variation, if eliminated is not going to stop racism or the systematic oppression of black people.

Words are just random strings of letters thrown together to create a language. The harm only comes from the minds of the receiver and how they perceive it's intent. And the more a word is used, the less power it holds.

Sticks and stones may break bones, but words cannot hurt me.

Eliminating fag, or gay, is not going to lessen homophobia.

This is not my point. My point is that if homophobia was lessened, then gay being used as a serious insult would die down

If you try and force people not to use words in a certain manner or try and impose rules on natural speech it usually fixes those meanings and words for potentially hundreds of years giving it less of a chance for it's sting to disappear or change and may or may not lead to the death of the word after those decades and decades of conserved meaning. It's happened before throughout history when various departments of "proper" language try and tell people how to speak and what words mean.

I personally like to just leave people the fuck alone when it comes to how they talk.

Perhaps not "off limits forever" as the original comment suggested, but I just wish everyone thought it was a lame thing to say, seeing as it does use a minority as the butt of it's joke. I'm not going to go around the internet telling every person I see using it off, but it's remains a nuisance to me. A pet peeve, if you will.

[–]Diarrhea_Van_Frank 0ポイント1ポイント  (1子コメント)

it does use a minority as the butt of it's joke.

No it doesn't. It's not used in the same way at all.

It won't. It's more likely semantics change and gay stays an insult but won't be used to describe homosexuals. There was a South Park episode about this... or was this about "faggot"? But I think you get the drift. It's used so widely, especially on the internet, the connection to homosexuals is just historic and barely there in the present use of the word.

Why are homophobic slurs acceptable and no where near the same level as racial slurs. I'm sure I'm going to get plenty of responses saying "I'm gay, and you're a faggot for thinking that way" or something along those lines. It happens all the time. It may be because it's pride week, and that's why I'm leaving this comment. I'm gay, and it does bother me when people use gay, fag, faggot, cocksucker as insults, but I keep it to myself (except for now, and I'm talking about in person) because I'm apparently in the minority even in the LGBTQ community which is pretty sad.

No you're not. People just sometimes have that lgbt friend who is okay with it, and then consider them to be the 'reasonable' lgbt people.

What do you mean by "No you're not"? You're right though. I think all of my ex's, friends with benefits, (LGBT) friends and fuck buds are okay with it. They may or may not be secretly offended, but if they are, it's probably so they don't push away their friends for being 'preachy'.

I'm apparently in the minority even in the LGBTQ community

That was the 'no you're not', apologies for not quoting you originally. It's very common that marginalized groups will ignore issues and offenses in order to fit into a society that only recently even allow them to openly be a part of it. Hence, a decent amount of non-lgbt people might get the impression that all the 'reasonable queers' (ie. their friends) don't care if you use gay as an insult, because their friends don't call them out on it.

Of course there's probably a decent amount of LGBT folks who don't care about the use of it as an insult, but I doubt it's the majority.

Why? Do you think if people didn't use the word gay then there wouldnt be homophobia?

No. But I think if there was less homophobia, people would stop using gay as an insult.

I say gay all the time, my gay friends say gay all the time, I don't think this word and homophobia are related.

See my ironically vs unironically comment.

I get what you're saying, but the word gay in that context doesn't even mean gay anymore.

I thought the point of this sub was posting ignorant comments from imgur? This fits that description pretty well. I wasn't fuming at my keyboard when it happened, I just remembered the sub and posted it. You guys take the internet way too seriously if you assume everyone is actually mad 100% of the time.

Who is mad? I'm not taking anything too seriously. Yes, the comments are ignorant, that's what we're commenting on.

Still, I'm not going to get my jimmies rustled from some silly internet comments.

This sounds like you thought I was mad.

No, I was only talking about myself. I wasn't trying to refer to you or anything

[–]PM_ME_DICK_PICTURES -2ポイント-1ポイント  (8子コメント)

A word only has power if you assign power to it. Otherwise it's just another word.

You could say that about any word, but the truth is words hurt sometimes because we're all human.

Wow that's the queerest thing I have ever heard

Well, tbh. Calling people gay as an insult is pretty gay in itself. If you use it as an insult because you don't like gay men, that means you prefer straight men. Which means that you're gay if you're a guy.

The only people I've heard complain about this is people who aren't gay

Maybe you're gay as fuuuuu'
