Ok, if we don't know how to read, you don't know how to write.

It's a story, not a witness statement. It has to be interesting, hence his/her use of illustration. Should the writer also be careful to never use any sort of pronoun that might identify gender, even if that makes the story less pleasing to the inner ear? We all know what the writer meant by "ditzy cheerleader type", because it is a trope common to our culture. Pretending that type doesn't exist doesn't do anything except hobble expression.

"It was a muggy day" would also not be relevant, but you'd be almost as obnoxious for complaining about it's use in a STORY.
