But it is moving..

Each individual dot is changing, but the square formed by the dots is not.

I wish more people would get this. The balls are spinning in place, ie "not moving".

What is there to get? It's not fascinating, there is movement. It's not an optical illusion like the ones that have larger spirals and shapes that converge into a deeper perspective. Those are pretty cool. This is meh.

Just because it's an animated illusion doesn't mean it's not an optical illusion. They work on similar principles, it is tricking your eyes into perceiving the square tilting side to side. There are moving parts but they literally do not "move" from their position, grab a ruler or any flat edge and you can see that the tilting is an illusion

Remove the white of the circles and you'd still see the same thing.

The boundaries themselves are moving.

THIS IS NOT AN ILLUSION.

I never said it wasn't an optical illusion. I said it wasn't like/comparable to the other ones we're used too where there is zero movement.

There is movement, but the square, as a whole shape, is not moving or tilting as it seems to when you first look at it. It is an illusion caused by the stripes on the spinning balls. The lines are staying in place while the balls spin in various directions.

Yes that's true, but the square made of the lines inside of them circles is moving. There are more squares moving than there are static ones.

What? There's the big square, made up of lines which are made up of small, striped, spinning balls. What squares are you talking about?

Spinning balls have stripes. Those stripes move in a way that forms a tilted square. It's blatantly obvious the balls aren't moving. It's bad illusion. I would draw you a more extreme still version on paint but I'm on mobile so I can't.

Yup, you're correct. When the square looks like it's tilted it actually is tilted because the lines that the stripes make up form a tilted square. So technically the square is moving because the square is made up of the stripped lines, not the balls themselves.

Too bad people dont' get what you're saying. This was my first thought when I looked at this too. The squares are made up of lines on balls that move, thus the squares are in fact moving even if the balls stay in the same spot.

That's pretty much exactly what I'm saying, the only difference is that you're saying just he stripes are moving while I said the balls are spinning in place.

There's more than one square.

The square made of lines is absolutely moving.

The square made of smaller squares is not moving.

If the lines in the dots move together so does the square formed by them, therefore the square is moving.

This is an awful "illusion".

Edit:

To clarify, if you can see exactly what is going instantly when looking at it, it's simply not an illusion by definition.

It's fucking not. Get a bunch of light-up balls. Have them light up like they are in the gif, and arrange them in a square. The patterns on them change, for sure. But the balls are not moving. They are fucking stationary. FUCK.

But it doesn't look like the white balls are moving, NOBODY IS EVEN CLAIMING THAT.

The black lines making up the square are moving, therefore by every single definition, the square is also moving. If you apply transformations to the boundaries of a geometric object that's movement.

It's like taking a clock and saying "the clock isn't actually moving" even though the pointers are...

NOBODY IS EVEN CLAIMING THAT.

That's the premise of the illusion; that it looks like the balls move.

Then I guess it just isn't working for me. To me it seems really obvious that it's just a moving gradient with a white circular background, I don't see it any other way.

I guess that's where the confusion comes from.

That might be the cause of the debate here, it's just like the blue-black/white-golden dress where only certain people can actually see the illusion.

To me the point people are making seems completly wrong because I don't see it at all, and I think a lot of users are seeing the same.

This is really interesting.
