Last sentence is missing a verb. Yeah, it sucks to be you right now if you have large skill differences between your mains and the other classes, but you still want to play the other classes (possibly to remove said skill differences).

Confusing? The map is basically a straight line with three layers. Sure, I'll play with you as soon as there's an Asteroid server again. Are you european?

You know about matchmaking, right? Been in development and beta for a while. Matchmaking works as follows: Queue up (alone or in a team with friends), after a short wait you will get sorted into a fresh server (with a map you may or may not like) with other people of similar skill and play a full serious best-of-3 match.

Of course you may not leave or switch teams, so you have to be sure you have enough free time to play a whole match, and you have to be sure you have enough frustration tolerance to hold out until the end even if you're losing hard, and of course you have to be playing the objective at all times unless you want your teammates to get really pissed at you.

Competitive matchmaking is exactly this (6v6), where you gain rank points when you win a match and you lose rank points when you lose a match.

"Casual" play is also exactly this (12v12), where you gain XP when you win a match, but you don't lose XP when you lose a match.

Pubs have been removed.

You see how this new atmosphere is completely unsuited for:

  • people who do not enjoy being rolled
  • people who do not have much time to play TF2
  • people who do not want to play TF2 for more than short periods of time at once
  • people who do not want to play the objective all the time
  • people who do not want to be under pressure to win
  • people who do not want to play against people playing the objective all the time
  • people who do not want to play against people of their own skill level all the time
  • people who do not want to be judged for their skills
  • people who want to try a new loadout
  • people who want to dick around
  • people who want to play on a certain map

I'm sure you can see how all these people in total make up a vast majority of TF2 players.

Option 1: Wait until a bunch of new proper community servers are made. Option 2: Wait until Valve puts quickplay back. Option 3: Make your own community servers. Option 4: Uninstall and let's go play something else. What's your second favourite game?

Then I'm sure that you'll understand that it is driving most players nuts that they're now being told that if they want to play the game as they've played for years, they should go somewhere other than the default servers.

That's what casual mode is for, and I'm sure it'll make a better first impression. There's no reason pubs can't exist alongside it though.

Actually I've made the exact suggestion of the casual play gamemode before in this subreddit, hours after TF2 competitive was announced, but I never dared to suggest it replace pubs (interestingly enough, the idea of unranked matchmaking was very poorly received back then).

Quickplay was still way more convenient. The damage is done now anyway.

You try browsing the server list for good community servers. They don't actually exist anymore.

I know this is a huge opportunity to revive community servers and that especially you are very attached to the idea, but we'll never manage to get even a majority of quick play users migrated over to community servers before they lose interest completely, since there are way too few good servers right now, and we have no way of telling them about community servers. So we still need the Valve servers back ASAP if we don't want to lose half our players.

Yet this fiasco is still a huge awareness boost for community servers. We do have the option to facilitate entry to community servers in other ways too, for example creating a rating site for community servers acting as an improved community server browser, assuming such a thing does not already exist.

Does this not count as a petition yet? I'm sure the TF2 team will have a look at community opinions for feedback, and they'll at least inspect the Reddit front page. Also all the e-mails people have been sending are sure to have an impact.

The problem with that is that if you're twice as specific, you need to wait twice as long to find other players that match with you. TF2's playerbase is just not large enough yet for either waiting time to be insignificant.

TF2 also went without matchmaking for years. Adding new things is fine, but removing the old things people grew to love is just a really bad idea.

There's a rather simple low-tech way to easily take out big worms: Distract them by placing some empty turrets in their range, and while they're busy shooting down those turrets, you can chuck poison or fire or bullets at them.

Doesn't work with most gamemodes, since it's hard to tell when exactly the last 3 minutes are. Well technically you can tell by the fact that lots of people are leaving, but how else is autobalance gonna work? Maybe there could be a 3-minute delay after unbalancement before autobalance kicks in.

Well it's a good thing you have casual mode for that now, and the new players can have their pubs.

You also become unable to join matches for a time, subsequent abandons will increase this time. Good news, abandon one game and you can't play on any Valve server at all for a time. Abandon more, and you might as well uninstall TF2, because community servers are worth shit.
