Collect Them All! Or Not: $30,000 ‘Feminist Deck’ Kickstarter a Bust

If you are the type of person who wants a deck of cards emblazoned with the likes of Anita Sarkeesian, Sarah Nyberg, and Randi Lee Harper, you are about to be severely disappointed. The “Feminist Deck” Kickstarter campaign was extremely successful at amassing more than $30,000, but extremely unsuccessful at delivering on a single promise. The Kickstarter’s creator announced yesterday the project would be cancelled more than a year after receiving funding.

Upon receiving the funding, the Kickstarter’s creator, Kiva Smith-Pearson, told her backers she’d hired 17 artists to help her complete the project. The aim was to create a playing-card-type collection of modern keyboard warriors that most people have probably never heard of, unless they have a keen interest in internet drama.

It is not clear whether backers will be issued a refund, as the updates have been set to private. Before the apology message, Kiva had not sent out an update in 4 months. In the meantime, however, she was very active on social media tweeting more than 200 times a day and posting YouTube videos of herself smoking pot.

What’s strange is that even the promise of creating a Thank You page listing backers somewhere on the internet could not be accomplished after a whole year.

But luckily in the wild west world of crowd funding, no one is ever responsible for the money they squander and everything is okay at the end, product or not.
