Drake Writes Open Letter About the Death of Alton Sterling

A photo posted by champagnepapi (@champagnepapi) on

When video surfaced Monday night (July 4) of two white Baton Rouge police officers killing 37-year-old Alton Sterling, the internet went nuts. The disturbing video shows the officers tackling Sterling, who is black, to the ground with one with one shouting “He’s got a gun” and then “he’s going for the gun,” before firing shots. The officers then fire six shots to the chest and head area of Sterling while they were on top of him.

As the country now mourns yet another black American killed by police and almost two years following Eric Garner’s death, Drake shared an open letter on his Instagram, reacting to the death of Alton Sterling.

“It’s impossible to ignore that the relationship between black and brown communities and law enforcement remains as strained as it was decades ago,” he wrote. “This is real and I’m concerned. Concerned for the safety of my family, my friends, and any human being that could fall victim to this pattern.” Read Drake’s entire letter above.

This morning, plenty of rappers took to social media to voice their anger and confusion on how a man who was selling CDs can be horrifically murdered by the people who jobs are to “protect and serve the community.” The Game also took to Instagram, penning a lengthy caption in which he says it’s time to take action against police brutality. Even Kanye West took to Twitter about the death of Alton Sterling. Pray for peace and hug your love ones.
