United players' record in Euro semi-finals

Manchester United are guaranteed a representative in the Euro 2016 final as France prepare to face Germany in Marseille this evening (Thursday).

Bastian Schweinsteiger is winning his race to be fit in time for the semi-final, while the host nation have Anthony Martial and Morgan Schneiderlin in their squad. Both of United's French stars watched from the bench as Iceland were overcome 5-2 in Sunday's last-eight fixture.

Over the years, United players have had a mixed record at the last-four stage of the competition.

The first Red to go this far in the tournament was Peter Schmeichel, who faced the Netherlands when Denmark were bidding for a place in the Euro '92 final. United's no.1, who had just enjoyed his first season at the club, made a stunning save to deny Bryan Roy in extra time and crucially kept out Marco van Basten's penalty as the Danes triumphed 5-4 in a shoot-out after the initial 2-2 draw.

Four years later, England's Euro '96 dream ended when they were beaten on penalties by Germany at Wembley but Gary Neville was suspended and his brother Phil was only an unused substitute.

There was more spot-kick woe in the 2000 European Championship as Jaap Stam missed from 12 yards when the Netherlands were beaten 3-1 by Italy after 120 minutes of stalemate. Fabien Barthez had already agreed to join United when he helped eventual winners France to beat Portugal 2-1 in the other semi-final, even though he had yet to arrive at the club.

Ruud van Nistelrooy and Cristiano Ronaldo were on opposing sides when the Netherlands lost 2-1 to Portugal in 2004. Ronaldo headed the opening goal, as he did again in Wednesday's Euro 2016 win over Wales, and is the only United man to score in a European Championship semi-final - excluding shoot-outs.

In Euro 2012, Nani was the sole Reds player at the last-four stage but, despite converting his spot-kick, Portugal went out 4-2 on penalties to Spain after the tie ended 0-0.
