Fucking hell. Wish we had that kind of money to splurge with.

It's not like it's been that successful for the past few years. Shiny new players do not necessarily make a team competitive, especially the first year.

Di Maria and Depay were almost £100m down the drain.

More like £50m. PSG paid a lot of money around £44m to get Di Maria from United. United bought him for £59m.

Makes the long wait between May and August more palatable though. But I agree, signing a lot of players rarely improves a team too much, look at Spurs and Liverpool following the sales of Bale / Suarez or United over the last few years

That kind of spending is just another proof Mourinho is just a cheque book manager

[–]mcafcLe Coq for long term DM

Seriously. If they get Pogba along with thess signings, even Moyes would be expected to win the league.

Finding a negative in actually signing players? Nice one. Arsenal should be emulating United save for Pogba and spending serious cash on a world class striker and not listen to frugal fools like you.

[–]14DeadsoulsWe're gonna sign a striker this window, for sure. 1

Arsenal should be emulating United

We don't make 1/4 of what they do though. We can't even spend £100m per year financially whilst they can go over £300m before FFP comes into play - then they can go even further if they don't mind making a loss.

Really? Who did he spend big money on at Porto or Inter? At Inter they actually SOLD Ibrahimovic and got Eto'o, Milito and Lucio. Wow how could he not win with spending like that?

At Chelsea he sold Mata, Luiz, KDB, Lukaku and purchased Costa, Cesc, Matic and Luis. He sold class players and bought a different set of class players that he felt fit better in his team. You could argue about the shortsightedness but he did not go on a Perez or a Sheikh Mansour like spending spree there. To me it seems like he had a clear vision and it won him the league.

At Real Madrid, a club that has a history of spending like no other, transfer windows during his reign had some of the lowest spending by club standards (inflation adjusted).

I personally do not think he spends ridiculous money. I do not even think spending money is bad. It just screams of sour grapes coming from us because not even a single person would complain if we spent a 100 million pounds this window.

Hate him for being a bully, hate him for being an asshole but to downplay his ability and his accomplishments is bitter. I wish we would collectively channel the rage we are feeling currently after reading that headline towards our own management and board instead.

It's just evidence of how terrible/wasteful they've been over the past 3 seasons that Mourinho immediately felt the need to spend that much money.

I don't think Mourihno is responsible for all of these signings. Utd were going to buy Zlats whether Jose was there or not.

Manchester are a public company and they need to constantly boost their brand to maintain share prices. This is why they have decided to make galacticos signings every summer; even when they aren't a perfect fit.

I agree that even with all their big signings their team remains crap. Di Maria and Depay were £100m down the drain. I do think that given a big check book, Mourihno can build a good squad. He has already started gobbling up defenders.

Zlatan was the cheapest even considering he's probably on 300k p/week. He was a free transfer unlike Mkhitaryan and definitely Pogba.

How much did we spend last year?

How much did Spurs, City, Liverpool, United, and Chelsea spend?

What was the order of finish for those five and us?

Now, this is not to say that we should stand pat. I think we should and will make some moves, but we need to be smart about it. Buying for the sake of buying won't win many games.

Fucking outrageous the state of modern football tbh. Oh how I miss my childhood haha

If they get Pogba they are definitely the favorites to win the league. We'd have to sign a world class striker like Aubameyang/Benzema/Lewandowski/Higuain to compete with them. We'd also likely need another CB as well to pair with Koscielny. Don't think Morata/Lacazette will cut it if Pogba returns to Old Trafford under a Mourinho regime with Zlatan up front.

That's assuming that Zlatan doesn't flop?

Any player in the league could flop, it's a non point.

But an old player coming into a new side in a new league playing in a squad with 4/5 players who themselves have just been bought is much more likely to flop.

[–]14DeadsoulsWe're gonna sign a striker this window, for sure. 0

Favourites? I'm expecting them to fight for 3rd. Maybe in 17/18 but next season I don't think they'll be there in March.

Really?

Even with Pogba I'm not sure I'd rate their team better than ours or City's.

value of signings in the last 3 seasons

Man U - 280m

Arsenal - 150m

¯_(ツ)_/¯

As someone who really wanted us to sign Zlatan and even more so Mkhitaryen; I don't know how far they'll go with them but yes, this is a good window for them.

Since Vardy turned us down, Higuin is the only other forward player we can pursue that could make this window of ours good enough for me.

edit:typo

Fair play to Mourinho and United. Getting their business done, top class players and all money that they have earned. Reckon it'll be between them or City for the title.

Fuck United. Their last few transfer windows have been desperate and outrageous and have accomplished little to boost their position (Though they have some good young players now, admittedly).

Those four players and Mourinho do not guarantee anything.

This is exactly what Mo did at Chelsea and they won the title that year.

We have got Wenger bro. The GOAT manager. Don't worry

Bro didn't you know we are broke. All hail the great manager who literally sacrificed everything to be our manager! He didn't sign for real madrid you hear!

Yeah man.. Wenger built Arsenal. The club was nothing before him. I don't know what would happen to Arsenal when Wenger leaves one day, probably a decade from now

I hope we already have a Wenger duplicate ready for when he gets too old b/c I can't imagine not being this successful. Imagine if we actually came in 5th or not get out of the group stage of cl, I think I couldn't handle such failures. I don't even wanna think about those horrors because if we overspend a little, we will go all the way to the championship and become like leeds or even worse out of the football league :gasp:

[–]PB49 -4ポイント-3ポイント  (4子コメント)

But you will have to make peace with the fact that we will not be successful after Wenger leaves. Wenger is already massively overachieving with our squad. We have been in CL for 20? years without spending a penny.

He's not overachieving with this squad, he definitely was between 2008-13 though

Yea just incredibly overachieving with the 4th highest wage bill and 5th most spent on players, pretty close to Chelsea on wages actually, and never even challenging for the title. We came in 2nd with 71 points last season when everyone was shit while the year before we had 79 points. We don't overachieve we are average. To give you an example. Let's say you are taking an exam and you get C's when you expected B's or A's. But your friends shit the bed. Does that make you satisfied? Honestly to me, no. We are competiting against ourselves and should look at where we were last season to the one before or the one before or the one before. I honestly believe we haven't improved much at all.

Who are actually over achieving are Atletico the fact that they were able to actually go into the last game in la liga with a chance of winning the title is commendable. The fact that they were able to beat Bayern is commendable. Can you tell me a season where we went as under dogs in the cl or pl where we were underdogs and actually blew everyone away like Leicester or Atletico. We are average

And why is not spending anything commendable that is so stupid we have limited resources and use everything we have to actually challenge. The fact that apparently we are saving money for rainy days or something like that is horseshit. I do not and will not accept such losers mentality. What do you think happens to players mentality when they see no accountability or pressure to succeed? Can you tell me a season where there was pressure on any of our players to actually perform or they would be replaced? The ones who did got better like Bellerin and Monreal. That needs to happen from top down starting with Wenger where not competing for the title this season should mean no contract but what do you know there is already papers talking about giving wenger another 3 years contract which is laughable.

How strong are the souces linking Pogba to United? Like they are linked every season and every season Pogba comes out and says he isn't leaving. I thought this subreddit regarded Di Marzio as a laughing stock journalist bordering on a retarded itk?

United fan here just coming over to see what other teams think of the Pogba rumours. Personally I am keen to not get too invested in this. True, every window he is linked and United are also linked with big names who then just sign a new contract (ie, Ramos last year).

However, Di Marzio is more or less on the money with a lot of United news. He broke Darmian before anyone knew (was even in the room and got a photo of darmian signing the contract) along with a lot of other transfers the last few seasons. He's reporting today that a contract is agreed in principle with pogba but no formal bid in so there's still a lot that could fall through but it's looking increasingly more likely.

Thanks for giving an United perspective on this. I guess jounos have clubs where they have contacts high up so have good info on transfers for that club and not others. Like Ornstein has for Arsenal or Simon Stone at the bbc has with United. Don't think Di Marzio has got an Arsenal rumour right but I've never paid attention to other rumours involving other clubs that he comes out with.

Thing is though, I'm 99% certain it's against UEFA rules to tap up a player (i.e. contact a player with a contract in principle) without putting a bid in for them. So technically speaking, if what Di Marzio is saying is true, then United have broen UEFA rules. Not saying that no clubs do this, but I struggle to see how personal agreements could have been made discretely while the Pogba is playing in the Eruos

[–]Quilpo 0

It's not a case of other clubs doing the same, it's a case of every other club doing it, tapping up is the transfer equivalent of sticking your arse out to stop people from getting the ball when it's going out, technically against the rules but it's accepted as part of 'what happens'.

United have more money than God, I say let them go crazy with it.

I honestly feel that in the PL, especially now, there is absolutely no guarantee that buying expensive players guarantees you success.

The margins between individual players in terms of performance are razor thin.

If anything, games will be won or lost less thanks to individual brilliance and more thanks to tactical nous.

That's why my money is on Conte at Chelsea to take the league by storm despite United buying the world.

FFP is such a flawed system.

[–]14DeadsoulsWe're gonna sign a striker this window, for sure. 0

They can spend £300m a year for 3 years before FFP comes into play for them.

Can we please stop making the assumption that Pogba has already signed for United. He is an extremely ambitious player and is much more likely to go to Barca or Real. United meeting the fee doesn't mean he will agree personal terms, so everyone settle the fuck down.

Is this a reliable source? I heard his number one choice was Real. I can't imagine he's in a rush to go back to Manchester after leaving on bad terms.

He said if he can't move to Real Madrid he'll move to Manchester. He apparently also said that moving back to United was always part of his career plan.

If United sign Pogba and win the title I reckon I would cry and give up football. It just shits in the face of what football should be about, and not cheque book management and buying cultures. I know we all love a star signing, but I love a one club hero more. Raised from the ranks and a true clubman. None of this chasing trophies because you are bigger than a club attitude. I personally find it toxic for football.

yeah mourinho has built a strong team. zlatan will succeed in the prem, he will probably outscore giroud lol.

we need some good attacking players to compete- city, chelsea and liverpool will all be strong next season.

liverpool

Just like every other season where they're saying the same thing?

[–]Rekyht [

Klopp is a much better manager than they have had in a long time.

[–]elnino19nacho man randy savage [スコア非表示]  (0子コメント)

Better manager than they have had in a very long time, will definitely challenge top 4 next season.

Honestly my biggest worries are chelsea and united, they'll park their way to a title

Let's just remember, after all the players that City and the likes signed last year, who won the league. Hopefully Moron-Chester United flops.

Will be interesting to see if their team works well - Mourinho doesn't typically have a great first season, Mikhitaryan has a long history of problems adapting, and that's a lot of signings to the starting 11. I'm betting 3rd or 4th.

Mourinho doesn't typically have a great 1st season? What...

  • First full season at Porto (2002-03) won the league by 11 points.
  • First season at Chelsea (2004-05) won the league by 12 points and won the league cup.
  • First season at Inter (2008-09) won the league by 10 points and Supercoppa Italia
  • First season at Real (2010-11) 2nd in the league by 4 to Barca, won the Copa del Rey. Title the following year.
  • First season back at Chelsea (2013-14) 3rd in the league by 4 to City, won the title the following year.

I'd say his first seasons are pretty fucking great and he's a quick starter at his clubs.

[–]ZapfacedGlock 17 gonna take y'all to heaven 0

Review what you just said. Mou's problem is petering out in a couple of years not his first year. He starts his tenures explosively.

The dig at Liverpool and Juve is making me think that this is a troll post.

No way does Pogba go to United.

They've done good business imo, but they've made many signings before and there's always been people saying 'look, they've spent 200m, they're going to be awesome, no wait they're still a bit crap' and even with Mourinho there are no guarantees of anything.

If they get Pogba they will have had a miraculously great window though, but I just can't see it, Real Madrid or Barca will find a way to get him.

Did we miss an Abramovich to Man Utd. transfer announcement?
