Let's be real he's obviously still a decent player but is nowhere near as good as he used to be.

He shouldn't be an automatic starter but can still be an important squad player.

What do you want us to say? Yea, he contributes, but his stats for the last 2 years are not good enough to be LEADING the attack of one of the biggest clubs in world football. He was great in Moyes' season, but we need someone like that every year

He was great in Moyes' season, but we need someone like that every year

Nobody would play like that every year , which is the whole point, we had players like Mata, Di Maria, Falcao, RvP, and none of them out performed him purely down to the system our past two managers had them all playing in.

Rooney outperformed these and other players within these seasons, as the bottom says, logic stats his owmn stats and performances improve when the team does and the style of play does.

If he turned 12 goals and 8 assists into 20 goals and 12 assists as a starter, easy expectations in a better team and season, would you not consider that good enough?

I don't think Rooney's the kind of player whom you can either attack or defend using statistics strictly. He may not be as great as he was years ago, but still his work rate is commendable and he is quite unselfish too, with both his passes and the various positions he has played in, which have affected his stats over the years.

He has been decent for the last two seasons but he was very good in the Moyes season. I've seen some here say that he can only play when the team plays well which I don't agree with. He is often quite fired up even when the rest of the team may not be in a great state. The Moyes season he carried us..even in the FA cup final I wouldn't see us equalizing unless he goes on that run with that cross-he doesn't have the pace he had earlier but still he has that willpower and passion in him. When we are losing games he seems to be one of the very few who at least seems to care.

Though I'm not sure how he'll do this season-as none of us know(surprising, I know...)-but hope he'll do well.

Thanks for making some sense. There is no denying that Rooney's form has dropped over last few years. But he still performs better than his teammates. And that's why managers are selecting him. Not just because he is Wayne Rooney.

When he came back from injury Martial and Rashford were not dropped because of him. Its not like he is taking away chances from players in better form.

We as a team haven't been so great for the past 3 years. With or without Rooney. Lets wait and see how much he contributes when team actually starts to perform well.
