"Art is Not a Mirror Held Up To Reality, But a Hammer With Which to Shape It."
Welcome to Socialist Art! This is a subreddit for posting and discussing socialist art.
What is socialist art?: It is the art depicting the working class and its heroic struggle against the bourgeoisie. Most art considered socialist usually falls into the category of Socialist Realism and occasionally Mexican Muralism. Photographs of life and objects in socialist countries/events are allowed as well. You can include art by socialists and communists, art from socialist and communist countries, and art that was an important influence on social realism, such as from the Peredvizhniki, who were so important in Soviet Art, and indeed, in the Russian Revolution.
We now include Social Realism, the work of artists who draw attention to the everyday conditions of the working classes and the poor, and who are critical of the social structures that maintain these conditions.
Socialist art also includes submissions of socialist literature, music, poetry, movies, animations and dance.
Rules: This is not the place for debates between different socialist theories. Derogatory posts about communists such as Stalin or Trotsky or communism or socialism in general will result in a ban.
Posting images of every kind is permissible, this includes photographs, paintings, propaganda, architecture etc. Posts containing racist, sexist or homophobic content will be removed and result in a ban.
Advice on how to post: When posting a work of art, try to include title of the work, artist, and the year it was made. We want to keep it tidy in here. This is not a demand but highly recommended.
Repeats: Don’t repost an image that has been recently posted. No repeat images within the last month. Nothing that makes people think, “What is that doing here again?” However the thought “I remember that. It’s a nice piece of work,” is alright.
