Even without that... why would you want to facilitate a child that is half "you" to be placed into the hands of the kind of women* who need to get pregnant via a sperm donor.

Seriously. Why? Do you have some sort of sadistic desire to punish some future bastard children?

And please, don't give me the BS about "continuing your genetic line" -- it really isn't "yours" -- you certainly didn't do anything to create or even select the particular random combination of genes that comprise "you" (and really neither did your parents, they too merely passing on the combinations they were saddled with, etc).

* People can regurgitate the marketing BS and prattle on about "infertile couples" all they want; the reality is that increasingly "sperm donor" and IVF are being used to further the aims of a combination of both lesbians, and extreme feminist "don't need a man" types, as well of course as "post wall" women whose fertility has taken a massive nose dive (in which case they often not only use sperm banks, but also egg banks).

At the time, women who want to get pregnant would say "I just want a baby, that's all. I have enough money for myself and the baby."

Fast forward ten years, and the money runs out. Perhaps an illness. Perhaps a layoff. At that point, nobody is going to blame the woman for doing what she needs to do to get money. It isn't personal. It's just what she has to do.

Moreover, it might not even be her choice. If she goes on public aid, public aid is going to want to know who the father is, so they can collect. I think there was some story about a gay sperm donor who donated to two lesbians in a civil union a few years back. They held the donor not liable to them, but that didn't matter. State aid basically subpoena'd them to give them the name of the father, so the state could start collecting child support.

Not only that, but you don't even know what the laws will do ten or twenty years down the road. If my hunch is correct, and women are going to go bankrupt in greater numbers, all the laws that protect sperm donors might be declared void. You might think you'd be grandfathered in, and from state retroactive enforcement, you would be. But then, forty years later, your child levels a civil suit for backed child support (with interest) just as you are about to retire. Stranger things have happened.

The bottom line is, just because a sperm donor is not held responsible at the time of the donation does not, in any way, preclude the donor from being held responsible in the future. And once it's done, there's no way to mitigate the risk.
