Bloody hell!

Talking points:

  • Rooney will not play in central midfield under Mou.

  • Mhikitaryan pretty much confirmed (much to the displeasure of Karen the Press Officer!).

  • A 4th signing is intended. No hints at to who, but he did say it was a 4th position. Central mid maybe?

  • No players out discussed, though he alluded that if offers come in that will soon change.

  • Ryan Giggs chose to leave of his own accord. He wanted the big job, and has chosen to go and get involved. Mourinho called him 'Brave and Honest'. He is also welcomed back if he needs to come back.

  • Top 4 is not a target. He wants to win!

Thought he had a couple shots, perhaps inadvertently, at LvG. Firstly with the "I was never very good at hiding behind words and philosophies." and then the whole "I prefer specialists more than multi-functional players" which again, is what I saw LvG doing a lot of.

His comment on the 4th being done before the 31st I'm guessing that means if Pogba can't be completed soon he'll move onto the 2nd target. That might be Matuidi if so that's fine with me but I'd prefer a younger player that can offer us 3/4 years at the highest level.

Also after reading the comments and comparing it to the video I thought he was a lot more respectful than the media made out (shocker). Excited for the pre-season/season to start. R/soccer is pissed about Mourinho and I love it.

Perhaps Darmian isn't good enough for what he needs? Darmian is weak in attack and we have been linked to Fabinho. So it's not as clear cut that the 4th is a CM.

Very good point, will be interesting to see if a new RB is bought in. However a lot of reliable sources are stating we're chasing Pogba and it's definitely the case of where there's smoke there's fire; so it seems CM is the 4th position he wants to strengthen imo.

Couple things -I believe- to take away from the presser:

  • Specialists: He wants maybe one or two all-rounders but not more. I think it is fair to classify Mata, Rojo, Valencia, Rooney, Blind and Young here. Not all of them will be let go, obviously, but I think there is a fair chance that we might see another exodus next summer.
    He wants specialists, who can do one thing but that damn perfect. This points to a holding midfielder (Kante and Matuidi being rumoured with us lately). We have already bought a world class natural striker, a winger and a center back to back his vision.
  • Rooney: His appetite might have changed, maybe he is not a natural number 9, but he is not going to be a number 6 or 8, so no midfield. (This bring the question, where will he play then? Maybe as a number 10 in a diamond. We will see.)
  • Youth: He bring young players up to the first time. He has always done. It is "not true" to say otherwise. This won't stop now.
  • Desire: The aim is to win, not to compete. Seeing the last 3 years of 'failure' for the club, he is still not taking the easy way saying top 4 is a good enough start. We will give it our best shot, and we will take the title home.

All-arounders, he particularly mentioned players that can play in defense if needed. Don't think Mata or Rooney fit that billing and Rojo is out an out and out defender. Likely an indication that Blind and Jones are done, since Carrick fits the bill as a midfielder/defender and was retained.

Thank fuck for that to be honest. LVG's signings were usually big multi taskers, but I just felt like after signing so many players, we still hadn't really sorted out those positions on some level. Yeah I mean, we're talking about a serious demotion, Jose won't play him at CB or LB I think, he'll be Carrick's cover likely unless we sign somebody else to serve that role. He's just not got the physical traits for the positions - fine, he reads the game well enough to not need to 90% of the time, but that 10% when he's cocked up, he doesnt have the sheer pace, or power to fix his mistake.

Just going through the 4th target position wise, assuming we play 4-2-3-1 I doubt it would be GK vs. De Gea, LB vs. Shaw, RW, LW vs. Martial, CF or CAM vs. Rooney. Does another CB count as a different position? I don't really think so.

That leaves RB or one of two CM positions.

It's absolutely CM. We have 2 solid if not amazing options at RB, but a ton of mediocrity in one of the most important areas of the pitch. I haven't given up on Schneiderlin but there's no way Fellaini, Schweini, Carrick or Herrera are long term World Class at that position.

Not that I think Pogba is the messiah that others do though. He is a great player but has his flaws and is definitely better as one of a 3 than in a holding pair - he's too attack-minded.

So we've been linked with Pogba and Matuidi, neither of whom's best position is in a 4-2-3-1, but I mean, he made Fabregas work pretty well there and I don't know of anyone else we've been linked with. I do see parallels between Mkhi/Willian and Matuidi/Ramires though, so he might fit Mourinho's plan.

I still think Mou wouldn't sell him immediately after becoming manager before he reaches that record and I'm not sure if the club would let him do that straight away, I think he's only like 5 goals off so even as a squad player (so Jose won't have to play him all the time) he could have that done this season and then Mou could be free to sell him after that.

I don't think Valencia is included in that actually, he's hardly versatile at this point. He's not good enough to play on the wing, but showed just about enough defensive ability last year that combined with his workrate he can do a decent job at fullback.

The others are going to struggle to get minutes this year though.
