Valencia isn't the captain of Ecuador anymore, not after choking Sterling

Aha, didn't realize. And Zlatan has retired. But if we loosely define the group as anyone who has been captain of their country, it's still interesting.

Not being a captain doesn't exactly not make him captain material though, which I believe go be the purpose of this post after people criticise how many leaders we have on the pitch

He deserved it. Sterling was an absolute mong for trying a studs up challenge a week before the World Cup.

That was such an insane challenge under any circumstances. Went straight at the plant leg.

Zlatan retired from international football. No longer captain

Leadership is strong this season. Jose the general and his on field lieutenants.

Might add Captain doesn't make them a leader either. Me personally out of that lot I would only have Zlatan and BFS down as leaders

I'm not a massive fan of Rooney as a player anymore, but I would definitely say he's a leader.

I have no idea why people think this. He does a lot of shouting when he's angry (like against I think Everton or Leicester in LVG's first season) so I suppose that's why people think he's some good leader, but he's never struck me as the leader kind. I feel it's because we have a lack of senior players that have been at the club for more than 3 years, he's really the only option along with Carrick but Rooney shouts more so might as well be him. He doesn't even come close to Keane, Neville, Vidic, Pat, etc.

He's been made captain of England and United so obviously the managers see things in him. He's widely regarded as popular and a big voice in the dressing room. He tries harder than anyone else on the pitch, even when he's playing badly. There are lots of different styles of leader. Cantona was was basically mute as captain of United, but he commanded total respect and nobody would ever have said he was not a leader.

I have never myself been 100% convinced myself. If you say leading as an example then I would have to agree, that at times he does this through his passion. But I am not sure I have ever seen him like order people about, grab people by the scruff of the neck etc to get them going.
