These people know nothing of good codenames, none of them:

  • Mint: Hurr durr random ass female names because "muh chivalry": Die in your own gender roles please.
  • Ubuntu: Random alliterating animals that end up sounding bizarre as hell
  • Debian: Toy Story Characters, come ooon.

I keep telling you people, you have to start naming it after historical warlords. Having your systems named something like "Atatürk", "Ghenghis Khan", "Napoleon", or "Xerxes" sounds far more awesome than 'Sarah' or 'Xenial Xerus'

What Nvidia does in naming its microarchs after historical physicists is also okay I guess but Toy Story characters? Come ooon.

Nope. This is why other people than you pick names.

"Atatürk", "Ghenghis Khan", "Napoleon", or "Xerxes"

Lame as fuck

Well, while I like the idea of using a Linux version with some cool name, plenty of people will not like to use a Linux named after someone that massacred their ancestors, and it is pretty understandable.

The fewer characters, the better. Why not just numbers?

I agree about Mint, but I like the Debian codenames. Ubuntu is a bit hit-or-miss, but overall I think it's pretty good.

Non-commercial Linux distros learning about marketing is about as unlikely as you getting a girlfriend, I guess.

Napoleon is a type of ice cream so you couldn't use that name either fyi.

Napoleon is a type of ice cream

Don't you mean neapolitan ice cream?

[–]veruus 0ポイント1ポイント  (0子コメント)

Neapolitan? That's a generic style, like spumoni.

[–]aberdoom 0ポイント1ポイント  (0子コメント)

Haha, no it isn't. You're thinking of Neapolitan (you know, 'of Naples', not the French dude)

[–]kupiakos 0ポイント1ポイント  (0子コメント)

Napoleon is a pastry, not an ice cream - that's Neapolitan.

And Bullseye is a comic book character and a character from Toy story.

Turns out that trademarks are domain speciic, another ice cream can't steal that name but something unrelated is fine.
