This only confirms my impression of burners as willfully ignorant and self indulgent.

A lot of them are. It's massive subculture and much of it is intensely problematic, probably only slightly less than broader society. BM as a whole is a worthwhile social experiment, though.

She posted an article from the magazine she writes for, against the rules of the sub, had photos shown of her at BM doing the exact same thing the article says you shouldn't, she then fought with people via combative replies in the comments.

The article she linked was interesting but the way she tried to share it with the group and then make herself out to be the victim is ridiculous.

Except she said she hadn't been to BM so how were there photos of her there? She also fronted up about the photos and said that she knows better now, so what people aren't allowed to grow and we should continue to judge her? I think she handled herself fine, I know I wouldn't have kept my cool in the face of so much wilful ignorance.

Not owning up to the idea that she had once worn those that she was now admonishing until the photos were posted is a big red flag to me. Her ultimate goal in sharing the article was to promote the website where she works and to shame those that dare wear bangles while they dance. Education is one thing, self promoting through shame is a unacceptable.

This stuff is so pervasive and frustrating

Sorry if it's a bad place to ask this, but I'm from a very homogenous culture and as hard as I tried, I couldn't understand the concept of cultural appropriation. What's so wrong about it if it's not done in a mocking fashion?

I think there are a lot of layers to it, and ways to adopt cultures that are respectful and inclusive.

I'd say the way to tell if cultural appropriation really is taking place is if the aspects of the culture that are being adopted are seen as positive and/or fun when outsiders participate, but the people from the culture are generally seen as backwards, uncool, and accused of not assimilating if they embrace it. This allows the culture to just become a costume to be put on and taken off whenever outsiders wish to, but causes real damage to those who are a part of it if they are a party of it in everyday life.

When kids aren't mocked and adults aren't demeaned for the things they wear or eat or do, I don't really think that culture can be appropriated (although it could be treated insensitively). When any of that stuff is packaged as "cool" or funny when used as "ethnic" ornamentation but is derided as an identity, then there's a problem.

Thank you! Makes more sense than a lot of stuff I read on the subject.

Also, Re: Native American appropriation/ First Nations appropriation, their culture was massively repressed through residential schools and they were beat, murdered, etc. just for wearing those things that people find so cool and practicing their religion, which people find so "exotic". It's been called a cultural genocide. For the people of these groups to be able to readopt their culture which was shamed and almost destroyed is massively political for them and for outsiders to adopt accessories of their culture without understanding what really happened and what it means is ignorant and flaunting their privilege in their faces. So it's not the same for white people to pick up smudging (sage burning) etc. as it is when indigenous people do it.

The phrase is actually cultural misappropriation.

God almighty, the level of self justification on that thread is closing in on #notallmen territory.
