What is the criteria to be a man U fan? (i'm american) (self.reddevils)

I absolutely love watching premierleague, but i want to pick a team to root for. I'm from Philadelphia, and am a die hard Eagles fan... never been to England, and my family's heritage is from Glasgow, so I've been a halfass supporter of Celtic. Since the owners of the Philadelphia 76ers bought a piece of Crystal Palace I thought that was enough justification to be a fan of them last season, but my friend from work who is from Belfast is a huge United supporter, and he's encouraged me to just jump over to that side.

From a local Manchester fan's persepctive, what is the criteria to be a Man U fan for a foreigner like me? Is there any? I figured asking about this is better than all those American Chelsea fans who just hopped on the bandwagon a few years ago and are super fuckin annoying.

Feel free to just be like fuck off and watch your american football too... totally acceptable

Meh fuck what anyone thinks who you support and how you do it. Keep following a team long enough you become invested in them. You'll find you get the best adrenaline rush when we score that injury time winner and you get devastated after a hard beat lasting an entire week. You get irrationally angry sometimes and make some reactionary comments you find yourself swallowing months after. At the end of it all you always look forward to some cold beers the next Sunday afternoon/Tuesday night with your friends watching football.

Criteria to support United? Just don't support any other PL-team, I suppose... Oh, and a little bit of hatred towards Liverpool and Manchester City would help!

I don't believe there's a criteria mate. Just start watching games. Start researching the club and it's history and the moments that made so many of us fans will drag you in. Soon you'll find every game is a spectacle and you look forward to it every week. This is the biggest and greatest club in the world and I'm sure give it a few weeks and some back story and you'll see why.
