Hello fellow Wastelanders,
This is a post for the Hardcore Fallout fans...Let's start with; Fallout 3. This was my first Fallout game I ever played. I then went back and played the originals 1, 2 and even Tactics. The game had evolved from an RTS/RPG game into a FPS/TPS RPG and it succeeded with flying colors especially when Fallout: New Vegas was released.
Here's where the problem lies: Fallout 4. It's a good game; don't get me wrong. But it's not a good "Fallout" game. Hear me out on this one..
If you've ever played Fallout 3 and remembered stepping out of Vault 101 for the first time, you will remember that "feeling" you got when your character laid eyes upon the remains of Washington D.C. which we all grew to call: "The Capital Wasteland". Where we spent hours, scavenging through Springvale High to The Museum of History and to downtown D.C. The Atmosphere in Fallout 3 was perfect. We walked through a land where once a great nation stood still and now lies in the radioactive ashes of the new world. But when it came to knowing the characters who lived in that world. There’s only a handful you can remember...Three Dog is a classic you can’t forget about him. Elder Lyons is another, but anyone else you’ve truly cared to remember?
Fallout: New Vegas on the other hand, you can even name some of the events that took place in the towns if you truly loved that game! Camp Searchlight? The Tribal Village (North of Goodsprings infested with Cazadores, Comic book fans would remember the location), Vault 34. The characters! You can remember almost everyone because the writing and acting in Fallout: New Vegas was good! You had Boone the Ex-NCR Sniper, Cass former Caravaneer, Benny the selfish con man you enjoyed killing, Ranger Hanlon or even Ulysses from “Lonesome Road”! It all felt natural. The world of New Vegas aesthetically did not look great, looked “rushed” if anything. But that still never stopped you from going out to learn and experience what happened in those locations.
Fallout 4 on the other hand…There’s nothing special to the world it self. You’ve got a few-Fallout toned and humored locations like: “The U.S.S. Constitution”, The Glowing Sea, Diamond City but then; there’s only so much you can do in those locations. Half of ‘em are which have nothing but fetch quests…Sure there is some story, but half of which we don’t really care because the writing is too brief or just plain not interesting. There have been some cool elements added into Fallout 4 such as in-depth customizations to your weapons, armor and even Power Armor. But then dumbing down the dialogue options because we have voiced characters or getting rid of skills to further perk advancements only cuts down on the replayability Fallout is known for…
So to summarize this post; Can Obsidian Entertainment do a better job at giving us the Fallout game we’ve all been waiting for since Fallout: New Vegas? Or was New Vegas the height of which Fallout was able to get far only to take two-steps forward but step backwards with Fallout 4?
Let’s hear your guy’s thoughts!
