It's WAY too complex to assume somebody is this belligerently idiotic and still win a nomination...

I don't think so. There's a serious backlash on the right against the Republican party, institutional power, and the concept of expertise. As well as against globalism, which is something Trump takes an extreme position on but his Republican opponents didn't. (of course Trump's policy positions are meaningless, there's no reason to believe he would stick to them if elected - but many people mistakenly take his word for it).

And Trump won against a Republican party that was very fractured and almost incapable of acting in a coordinated way, even before he started running. In a different year the party might well have been able to cooperate and stop him.

I'll at least hear that argument when it comes to a voluntary space like reddit. And that is certainly reddit's position. And there is some value in letting these idiots expose their true colors, in case anyone had any doubts about what "make America great again" is supposed to mean.

But, I absolutely think there are lots of places that logic doesn't hold up. Schools, work places, etc. Businesses should create safe spaces for their employees, schools should make school safe for everybody, etc.
