Let's take suicide bombers as an example. There's something about them that most people overlook: they're suicidal.

No one who loves life, who loves their fellow human, is going to blow themselves up. No amount of holy text is going to convince someone who genuinely loves living to kill themselves. Their life already has to be shit in order for them to consider it.

What causes life to suck? Low living standards mixed with population density and corrupt government officials. That's what causes people to turn to extreme versions of religion. Remember, it's poverty and lack of education that has a very strong correlation with reactionary politics. Islam, Christianity, and Judaism will manifest as liberal or conservative as the econonomic/political environment it's within. That's why we place more emphasis on addressing the underlying causes of extremism, rather than the excuse for it.

Also, I'm confident that all dogmatic religion will eventually become obsolete as living standards increase.

Religions are no different to any other ideology. When they are abused for the pursuit of power, bad things happen.

During the 19th Century British imperialists justified their land ownership in Ireland by claiming that the Irish were a lesser race. They justified this by using what passed for science in the day; craniology, taxonomy, and accepted biology. This isn't even mentioning the way that the scientific theory of race was used to justify eugenics across the world, and acts such as the holocaust.

Now, because the Nazis claimed to be operating according to "science" when declaring who was untermensch and who was ubermensch, should we abandon science? Should we judge, and hold negative views of those who use the scientific method? You have to remember, back then, scientific racism was not some fringe theory, but in fact accepted by the majority of European intellectuals and politicians.

When an ideology is abused for the pursuit of power that is bad thing, no matter the ideology. In order to prevent this we must create material conditions in which the abuse of ideology offers few, or no benefits. This takes away the benefits of abusing ideology, without having to destroy an ideology which most practitioners follow without issue.

I am very active in my religious community, however there is almost a daily fight with crazy racists who call themselves part of my religion.
