localization teams' jobs are to screen the stuff that's acceptable in japan for stuff that western audiences could interpret to be offensive

iirc they changed a plotline in the latest fire emblem game because turning a gay character straight would cause people to have a collective shit fit in NA, but im not 100% on the details of that one so dont quote me

And let's be honest, the only people to make any kind of outrage are desperate journalists.

Treehouse butchered a lot of it, let's be honest.

Here's a list of the insanity. http://imgur.com/a/X2w49

Additional fun: Bravely Second got ripped up, too: (one source) https://www.reddit.com/r/TwoBestFriendsPlay/comments/48m47t/bravely_second_localization_has_seemingly/?st=iq176koh&sh=4fb0361e

Remove any and all quest endings that involve anyone dying, and TADA! You've removed agency from the player so as not to upset anyone who would otherwise have to handle a choice in a game.

I don't know what I'm looking for here

The original Japanese compared to a JP translation, compared to the crap Treehouse put out, mostly. They left placeholders in conversations, added junk and poorly written rewrites that fundamentally change the characters, etc.

Funny thing is, this isn't just "Someone with too much time", this was basically the backlash from the fan translation compared to what the US/UK ended up getting. People were pretty much immediately aware of what was going on due to the massive discrepancies.

stop getting your panties all up in a bunch.

The localized version of the Xander x Leo support conversations don't change jack shit. In fact, the localized version makes way more sense and provides even more characterization for Leo.

Localization =/= translation.

If you want an non-localized version of a game, LEARN JAPANESE. And email Treehouse your complaints.

Those localization teams fk stuff up more than they help.. I say they should leave everything as is, and let people learn and experience things from other cultures.

i agree

sometimes when im playing monster hunter ill read a line that doesnt sound right and wonder what the original japanese version said

thankfully i can get right back to killing giant monsters and wearing their body parts as clothes and that usually helps me move past that

The team working on Phoenix Wright did a pretty solid job of it, though.

When their primary buyers are moms getting games for their kids, their hands are kind of tied on this. I'm sure the kids don't care, but the kids aren't the ones holding the wallets.

The major demographic for Pokemon is 16+, since all the Pokemon fans when they were kids have grown up and are playing them again for nostalgia sake.

And I don't mean specifically for Pokemon, but other games, like Blade & Soul for example, I know they removed a quest that involved peeking at bathing Barbarian women or something..

We can't go offending the ultra PC feminists now.

And yes, that really is the group they localize for. It's why some games just get butchered when they get moved over. Especially to america.

Sure, some games have a loli. And I guess that might be offensive to some people. Maybe. But the fact is I think most people buy it for that. The japanese companies certainly seem to think so.

So much so, that a lot of games just aren't worth the effort for them to port.

[–]Sheriff_K 0ポイント1ポイント  (1子コメント)

But utra PC Feminists aren't the ones that are going to buy games with lolis in it.. xD

[–]magurney 0ポイント1ポイント  (0子コメント)

That might explain why some of these games don't sell too well.

Gives a whole new meaning to that song "I kissed a girl and I liked it." [Relevant]
